In this video I cover how to model characters without a base sculpt. This is perfect for those who dont have a powerful computer but still want to create amazing characters. It may be old school, but it works just as well!

I like that you share the process with mistakes and all and talk about your thought process when trying to fix them. That is much more educational than a tutorial where everything is textbook perfect, because for sure when I try to model something, I'm going to make mistakes and get frustrated, and feel like a failure when I have to delete big chunks of my work and start over. This video will give me the confidence to try different things out and experiment a bit. It is good to have an idea about what details are important to get right and which ones can be glossed over a bit, because if everything has to be perfect, I'll never finish anything. Also, it is art, and art should be unique, so it makes sense that there is room for making decisions based on taste and style. Better to learn from your techniques and apply them to the art I want to make than to just copy your every move and hope that I can make the same model as you just did.

This is the type of Tutorial that was super common in the blender 2.6-2.7 days. If you started learning at that time you would have had a much more core understanding of topology because the sculpting and auto-topology methods didnt really exist outside of Zbrush, and even in zbrush, and even in modern auto retopology, you need to understand how to clean it./. This is S-Tier information that all of you need to understand as 3d artists, because it will set you free.

this blew my mind. i remember making models from scratch in milkshape 3d when i was a kid in the 90s lol... my models were messy and i built a lot of them one vertex at a time and manually added faces. im getting back into 3d art and topology is more important than i ever knew.

Interesting take on the old box- / Polymodeling. I definitely welcome more this kind of low-poly modeling content for the Blender! Less than a couple decades ago, this kind of boxing-out method was practically the only proper way to create 3D models for video games. That is the "back in my day" method, which often started with straight out extruding a box, often from the bottom of the leg upwards.
@Dikko
@Dikko 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean! It's clear though that this method still needs to be taught just looking at the comments. I feel that sculpting without understanding what's going under the hood has really confused newcomers to the art!

Ahh, I was wondering why my model's number of spans going up the arm from the fingers and made the feet needlessly dense--I was making the arm with too many verts rather than extruding from the few and then containing all the subdivisions within the hand. Much appreciated!

With regards to what you said regarding the muscle men, pinup girls, yadda yadda yadda, I'm a big fan of mesomorphic (i.e. Athletic) bodies, so, this might be because of my liking for sports, but like you said, it's a redundant loop I don't really need. However, since most of the models I'll be making will sport various different outfits as the story progresses, with only a small number of them bearing only one, I might clothe my characters entirely in sportswear for one such outfit (form-fitting sports pants and suitable top wear, for example.)
