Just spent three hours straight on this thing after an hour of practice last night and no prior tracker experience - this is amazing, super easy sequencing, an easy undo/redo feature (I'm looking at you Digitakt!) and so many unique features including fills and gorgeous sound output. This is a well built, luxurious sample/MIDI sequencer at an amazing price.

This is a great escape from over designed vst instruments and over featured gear. This pushes you more into the song construction aspect of music making. Albeit there are a nice amount of unique tweaking options but in a world with too many options too get lost in it’s a welcomed concept for me personally.

The sample editor and playback utilities are a whole world onto their own. The sequencer is almost Electribe2-level of quick, easy to use, and simplistic. It doesn't push you into focusing on arrangement more than other grooveboxes, I feel. It looks more different than it is. The UI is badass for what it is.

A spot on review! My first tracker and I love it. Compared to my Blackbox, Akai live, Sp404, the simple 7” screen allows you to start creating patterns immediately. I run it in horizontal mode like any traditional sequencer Pros: - easy sequencing; buttons laid out well; easy sampling; It’s form factor, light, thin, rectangular allows sitting on a sofa music making. The buttons/pads are great! And unlike the above 3 samplers I hardly need to refer to the manual. A 10,000mA battery lasts long enough for a good working session; FM radio; It has character! Cons: - for auto-time stretching the other 3 win out, the tracker requires a fiddly FX setting - for gods sake why not put a lithium battery in it (sorry the tracker mini which does have battery, doesn’t have the pads, I won’t be getting that) - why no audio transfer over usb from laptop, and why no DAW integration like the SP404?! - why is nobody making skins for it?! I’m selling the Blackbox, it lacks character, has no pads, screen is too small I’m selling the akai as it’s just not portable enough, but it’s definitely way more powerful than the Tracker, and it’s Wi-Fi and Splice integration is superb; I’ve replaced it with an akai studio hooked up to my DAW for studio use I’m keeping the SP404 because it oozes character and for sampling/mangling it’s superior to the Tracker, but I don’t find it as easy to use, need to refer to manual too often The tracker goes in my rucksack for train and plane use ✈️ Cheers

Just got mine. I'm selling my MPC Live and will only be using this. Why? It's small, about the size of a piece of paper, but sturdy AF due to the metal case. It doesn't get hot on your lap or even warm after hours of use. There is no physical manual because they update the firmware so quick with new features. However, you don't really need it because the interface is so straightforward that you will learn everything you need to know within 3 hours of playing with it. You can also render selections to a sample now. This is an amazing workflow and don't be fooled by "the grid", you can absolutely record in realtime non-quantized timing. One more thing, to change a track name, go to the master section 2 screen, press the record button and press a button below the screen to edit a tracks name (not in the manual). Get one!

This is the most useful tutorial I have found, so far, on using the Tracker's basic functions. I wanted to make a track rather than a loop. I asked myself why I was making loops rather than a full track and realised that most software is focused on that approach. Ableton's shadow covers most of the electronic music production scene. I tried to learn it daily for 3 months or so. One day I realised that I just wasn't enjoying using it. I had never really got beyond that point anyway. I read about DAWless setups and that looked more enjoyable. I do not know anyone else who does this stuff, I don't live near a city with any user groups etc. I don't work with anyone who does this stuff. It's me and the internet. I bought books and RTFMs. However, primarily, I am a visual learner. I realised that the people who post videos on YT do so primarily to make money from their passion. Most of them are not trying to teach or if they are then they do not have any qualifications in that area. They are trying to grab your attention through the lens of the YT algorithm, over the noise of their competitors, a short attention span and ungrateful twats who only post negative comments about their hard work. I picked through these people's work. In my ignorance I greedily hoovered up every word. And that was where I had a problem. They began where their knowledge ended. My beginning, my knowledge ended in a completely different place. We had different spectacles on. Theirs showed a much different world to mine. I have journeyed back through time to a video of yours from 4 years ago on the Korg Electribe 2. It is great. I know you probably hate it because of the sound quality but that video speaks to me, right now. I completely understand where your head is at and what you are trying to tell me. I know this must seem rather incomprehensible, why do I put it like that? I don't know really, I just know that I learn by understanding the motivations of the teacher. What are they trying to teach me? Why are they teaching me that? What do they expect me to learn from this? How do they expect me to learn? What is their philosophy with regards to the information they are giving me? I need to understand these tools in a very black and white way at this point in my music making journey. Can I pick it up and enjoy learning to use it? How easy is it to use proficiently? We once had a conversation about workflow. You said to me that it is an individual thing. I felt that what you were trying to tell me is that you cannot capture the ethereal nature of a person's mindset when they make the music they make. Yet you have done that. You have started a series on it. I really appreciate that. I realise that it most certainly wasn't because of that conversation but it most certainly will be helpful to me one day.

This looks awesome, definitely brings back memories! I was actually looking for a good MIDI sequencer, but found that most are limited to "one big loop" and don't have sections - or what you call patterns in a tracker. This one does more by producing sound itself too. Looks like a perfect companion. Thanks for your awesome review, it is so in-depth, calm and clear, actually a very good way to sell a product :)

ive been dreaming of one of these for many years, i never fully learned trackers but i always thought a hardware device makes alot of sense for the workflow - it would be really nice if this could export tracker format projects with all the samples in the file etc (.mod and .s3m for example) - i think it's a bit pricey in it's current state and the lack of stereo samples is disappointing, also it would be good if a lot more audio formats were supported, and also tracker music format importing or direct support for working with those files, they could easily leverage existing open libraries for such things; lastly i think the interface could use some improvement and more info could be shown on that screen - for example toggling different realtime readout displays (such as output levels of each track) in the background of the sequencer, or per-track waveform displays like many trackers do im glad someone finally decided to try making one of these and im sure alot could be added and improved just with firmware updates, thanks alot for the review and detailed demonstration!

While I am waiting for Play to arrive (there has been a delay in shipping to UK) I got Tracker to mess around a bit. Tracker format is something I stared making music with so it is not unfamiliar concept , and I must say it is probably THE BEST way of writting certain types of electronic music. The way tracker behaves, how it sequences notes and in general, parameters, is a tool for all kinds of Glitch,"IDM" and such forms of music. Also, Trackers made a huge impact on mainstream genres and practically spawned Big Beat and stuff around it. So, while i plan to keep my "main" workflow - sequencing most of the hardware via Octatrack and/or Cubase, I am yet to see how will adding Play to Octatrack work (I assume it will be absolute bang), having tracker around is not just a "sketch book", but a super powerful tool to go with your main setup. And then, on some projects, use it as a main sequencer, once you feel confy enough.

@@lebronsinclair8012 if you like the tracker interface for sequencing this takes the cake. The digitakt is a sampling beast though. So two different worlds and instruments. Actually more like: Deluge, Octa, MPC: ohh so you have one big black knob huh!? Polyend: I am a tracker Deluge: I have three knobs, as well as an unlimited buffer size - can stream from memory card, have real time effects, unlimited modulation, stereo samples, complex synth engine, looper, real time polyphonic audio input transposition... I am running out breath lol Octatrack: hold my fader Jokes aside it does look interesting and offers a unique and different workflow but it’s not killer of any of the devices you mentioned by any means, as feature wise all of them offer something that this doesn’t.

Apart from how good it looks and the fact that it uses a tracker, I'm a bit underwhelmed by it. Only 90 seconds of mono audio sampling per project. I'm afraid its really not even comparable to the Octa, Deluge or MPC. All of which offer significantly more than that and more importantly offer stereo sampling. In this day and age stereo is the least it should be offering

Just speaking for myself and my needs: if I still need a laptop for any reason (and I would with this thing) can't be better than a Deluge. It's half the price though, so unfair comparison for the polyend.

Hey @loopop! This thing looks amazing! I saw that there were options in the FX lanes for setting all of the notes to be set to a scale (Chromatic, Dorian, etc). One thing that wasn’t made clear from your video is whether or not the pads can be set to scales during note entry. Are the pads always in Chromatic scale, or can you change this to have all notes from the pads be in different musical scales as well? Thanks for another excellent review! You’re the best dude doing these. 👍

I'm a tracker fanatic who has NEVER switched to a DAW since the Amiga days and I'm now using Renoise. I'm tripping balls right now seeing this wonderful machine. But why all the limitations I ask? Just allow as many samples as the memory allowed, mono or not. I could use hundreds of small samples in one mod and it could be under 1mb. I hope a firmware update would fix this.

Seize - OPZ and this box could coexist nicely. Editing chords looks doable on this box, where on the Z, stacked notes can't be separately edited, especially if you lower resolution for 4 bars. OPZ would cover external device CC control with 4 encoders x4 x8 tracks (reduced use onboard track when controlling external). Both devices have strong performance macros, so variation on a sequence should be cool. USB host mode with file access to the SD would be nice to dump 12/6 second stems into the Z's sample spots (aif format).
