In this tutorial we'll be rigging two different things! One is a six legged creature, and the other is a hand. We'll be using Inverse Kinematics and a workflow where we make the rig first, and then add the parts later!

FINALLY! I'm 60+. 3D art is still in its infancy to me. Working from the costumes to the bones is absolutely an alien concept. I've always started drawing with the bones for positioning, implying muscles, then working on the skin and clothing. Thank you for showing me that rigging the animal, or human first CAN be done. I'm crying happy tears right now.😂

If you uncheck “lock object modes” under the edit pull down, you won’t have to switch back and forth between object and pose for parenting. Saves a lot of time and movement when there’s a lot to bind for anyone that didn’t know.

I recommend working on one side and adding _L or .L at the end of each bone or R if you're working on the right side and then when all of them are finished select all, right click and select symmetrize. It'll save you a lot of time.

I've seen other videos that do the same with the .L naming convention. Also what's the difference when parenting bone vs bone with weights?

@@simply_the_dev7588 parenting to bone is best for mechanical rigging and for solid objects like armor and to snap weapons and gear to certain parts of the body like the wasit or in hand while weights is more used for organic models like monsters and people

Just something I noticed at the start, when you're doing the bones on each side, you can just make one side and then use the symmeturies operation. This also symmeturieses the constraints and stuff

But keep in mind to name all the bones with "*.L" (or "*.R" depends on the side :) ) before symmetrize. This will keep it organized ;) symmetrize will name it with the other side index :)

@@sakariheinonen5252 its best to think of it like directions x axis is left and right y axis is forward and backwards z axis is up and down a reason why the x axis gets mirrored is if you think of human anatomy, its your left and right side that looks the same otherwise it be kinda weird to have a face on your backside or another butt on your front side

Thanks! This was just the reminder/refresher I needed for my current project at work. I did something entirely different with my rig, but your explanations were so easy to understand that it was just enough to apply for what I'm working on 😄 Husqvarna wanted me to do a showcase of a power cutter and the model I'm working on has an arm extension that can grip onto rails. I needed the arm to rotate in one axis while holding still onto a rail as the power cutter is moving, and your explanation of how to do the IK rigging reminded me of how I could achieve that 👍

You're incredibly talented and I feel blessed that you're giving us these amazing tutorials. I definitely intend on using this workflow for making gauntlets in armour sets for game-ready assets - Previously I've been modelling the finger sections in rest-position, and it can be really frustrating to get that right, and there's always a bit of deformities. Instead, if I model them and parent to an armature, I can change them to their final rest position after the modelling phase, and avoid the guess work involved. Thank you so much for this again! I've only recently discovered your channel and your videos are incredible, insanely well edited for time, and really informative.

One thing you can do that might speed things up even more: instead of axis locking, set up pole targets in the IK Constraint. The IK constraint will arc the IK chain in the direction of the pole target more or less automatically.
@Voreoptera
@Voreoptera Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. For the objects he is creating locking constraints makes more sense because there is locked movement in the joints. For other things pole targets would be better then locking. Also if he used pole targets then there may be small movement in unwanted directions.
