Thank you for sharing your story. My cousin was just told she has polyhydramnios, this is her 3rd pregnancy. The first two there were no complications. I’m trying to educate myself as much as possible, as she is scared. Congratulations on your beautiful baby. I’m praying her experience ends like yours.

Thanks for the question. My daughter was born by induction two weeks before the due date, because they were concerned with cord prolapse possibility. They had a whole team of pediatricians at delivery and checked everything with her, as we didn't know the cause of poly. They did not find anything wrong with her at birth, so we still have no idea what exactly cause polyhydramnios. I hope it all goes well for you!

Hi Juliana. My daughter Kara had her 36.5 week check - her AFI rose up again to 32. Doc wants to induce at 38 weeks, but her husband will be gone 4 days during that week for job training. So doc moved it to the end of her 38th week. Baby's head is way down in pelvis and she's 0.5 cm dilated. I told her to just REST with her feet up until baby comes. Anything you can also recommend?

Thanks for the comment. I'm sorry to hear you are both going through that, that is super stressful and I'm also happy to be of any help! That's great advice. I'd also recommend just based on my experience, for her to monitor any signs and symptoms of labor. In particular if the water starts leaking or if contractions pick up, to call her doctors immediately. But yeah, she should take it easy, sit and rest as much as possible, no lifting, no carrying. Baby being head down is actually good news, so hopefully it stays that way. Please keep me posted, i'd love to be updated on how everything progresses!

I’m 39w5d and was just diagnosed with Polyhydramnios 🥺 I’m being induced on my due date. I wish this was seen earlier when I was measuring 2 weeks ahead.

I’m measuring 4 weeks early and and want me to be induced 2 weeks early I could possibly go into labor next week (at 36 weeks) and I’m really nervous so I’m doing research.

Can it affect a baby's health or cause any abnormalities?? my wife's been diagnosed with at at 26th week with 24.1cm of AFI. Based on your experience, can it cause any complications if fluid is at that level?

Hi, thanks so much for the question. So it's a common misconception that it's the woman that gets it and then because the woman got it, it can somehow affect the baby. That is not entirely correct. From what I have been told by my team of doctors and researched myself, it is actually the baby itself that causes the woman to have polyhydramnios, in many cases. Usually polyhydramnios is a sign of something possibly being wrong with the baby's kidneys or lungs or bowels or stomach. That is not always the case however, it could also be because the baby is simply peeing a lot inside the womb. Lastly, in some cases the cause is unknown, as was in my case. As per if it can cause complications, yes it can, unfortunately, which is why I was getting non-stress tests twice a week after 34 weeks till I delivered and also why I had to be induced at 38 weeks, because there are several things that could go wrong close to the delivery date when there is too much amnionic fluid. I hope this gives you bit of information, please feel free to ask any more questions. Definitely, make sure to get a lot of doctor's visits and good care during pregnancy.

I'm 26 weeks and went in for a cervical length check a couple days ago and my after visit summary said I had this on it could it be a fluctuation she barely looked at the fluid in one spot?

Hey, congrats!! They normally don't look at the fluid too much till you are about 32 weeks, that's when they measure the four quadrants and add the total and see if it's within the norm or not. Until 32 weeks they usually just measure the largest pocket, that's how it was with me. I'd make sure they really check it at 32 weeks tho ask a lot of questions.

@@sarahgerhardt1201 oh I was just saying congrats on having a baby. I'm sorry to hear that they discovered polyhydramnios. It could still be that when they remeasure all 4 quadrants it will be normal, but definitely keep up with the appointments and get it checked again.

Did they gave you any medication when they found out that you have polyhydramnios? Your answer will be so much of a help to my case study. I'm a nursing student.

What is your study about? As far as I am aware there is no medication that was ever even mentioned to me after I was diagnosed. My AFI levels were in the lower range of polyhydramnios, though, so even if there is some medication I believe they probably decided that it's safer to just monitor me versus give me medication. My levels increased but only at the very end and then I was induced. With regards to amnireduction, I didn't have severe shortness of breath, or any other major symptoms, besides pain and discomfort, so that procedure would have been not worth the risk to perform, as far as it was explained to me by my doctors. I hope this helps.

That AFI seems quite high to me. Are you in the High range? I would speak to your doctor about what they can do to help. I know one of the options they sometimes do here is they pull out some of the amniotic fluid, it's a somewhat dangerous procedure, so they don't offer it to everyone with polyhydramnios, but in severe cases, they might do that. I'd consult with your doctor.

@@EmpireRiSing Hi, no problem, i was just curious. I was in my very early 30s. I also didn't have diabetes or high BP, i really had a very healthy pregnancy and was healthy, other than this condition.

Was recently diagnosed with this, the baby has to much fluid. I could possibly lose him, is there someway to lower the amount of fluid?

I'm so sorry to hear. There is a procedure they can perform, which is where they stick a very large needle and essentially withdraw some of the fluid. As far as I understand this is only done in extreme cases, such as when mother is having difficulty breathing, because the procedure itself is dangerous too. Speak with your doctor about your options. How far along are you and what is your AFI level?

Thank you so much for the comment! I am unfamiliar with this medicine, so I can not really comment on my experience with it, as I've never taken it. If you are worried about safety please bring it up with your doctor, or look for a second opinion with another doctor. I wish I could be of more help, but I was never given any prescription medicines to treat my polyhydramnios.

Sadly, from the research I did and based on what my own doctor told me there was basically nothing I could do to ameliorate the amniotic fluid levels. I did however continue to be as healthy as possible and eating healthy and exercising. Ask you doctor, maybe they have some ideas for what you can do.

I’m trying to figure out how to get baby to engage with polyhydramnios. At last scan (38 weeks) I had 36cm of fluid.

Hi, thanks for the comment. That is one thing that's extremely difficult with polyhydramnios. If there is so much fluid it's difficult for baby to engage, In fact my baby turned breach at 38 weeks, and then back into the head down position a couple of days later. It's kind of hard to even get them to be in the right position. I hope all goes well! Best of luck with the delivery!!

@@cook_and_eatt I have had poly with all five pregnancies. This last baby has hypotonia. I do not know if it is a cause or result of polyhydramnios. He is otherwise healthy so far.

Does mild polyhydroamnios also effect the baby?

From what I was told by my doctor mild polyhydramnios carries the same risks as severe, just to a lesser degree. Meaning that there is still a risk of all of those things that I mentioned in the video happening, but it's to a lesser degree than if it was severe polydramnios. Every case is very individual and every doctor is different however, so treatment plans and delivery plans can differ drastically from one case to another. I hope this helps. As far as I know, there is no way to actually prevent it. Of course being as healthy in pregnancy as possible is super important but even that might not do anything to prevent it. My doctor explained that it usually happens if a baby has problems with kidneys or bowels or lungs or some other organs, sometimes they can't identify the cause, which is how it was in my case. Best case scenario is that the baby is just big and pees a lot and that's what causes to have so much fluid, but again there is not much to do to prevent it, as far as I know.

Hi! I'm so glad I am able to answer on time. My AFI was 25.7 at 32 weeks. And then it went up to 30.4 at 35 weeks. What is yours? The normal range will be different depending on gestational age. There are charts you can look up if you google normal AFI levels. I believe at 35 weeks normal is between 16-27, but I'd google that again.

Sravanti generally, the complications with poly stem from the baby’s head not engaging with the cervix, so cord prolapse is a very real possibility as I talked about in the video. That was mainly the reason why I was induced early because they were afraid of my water breaking on it’s own and of cord prolapse. Other than that depending on the reason for poly it could be something to do with the baby that is causing it in the first place. In my case the cause was never figured out but they had a whole team for the baby at delivery in case something was wrong with her. Luckily she was fine. Did they tell you what is the reason for poly, in your case?

Hi, thanks for the question. My ultrasounds showed the following: my AFI was 25.7 at 32 weeks. And then it went up to 30.4 at 35 weeks.

I delivered at 38 weeks, I was transferred to hospital care at 36 weeks, so the hospital started doing ultrasounds on-site starting at 36 weeks, I can try to find what my AFI was during those weeks 36-38.
