Following on from the original pod bead video (Polymer Clay Pod Beads: #1 - The Basic Pod) this video explores creating pods and then curving and coiling them into all sorts of interesting shapes.
Curved and coiled pods can create beautiful, fluid movement in your pieces and are so incredibly simple to make you won't be able to stop.
Think about creating tiny coils, repetitive curved pods, coiled clasps - wherever your imagination can take you.
After the video I've shared inspirational images of how I've used some of these curved and coiled pods in my work - be sure to keep watching.

Hi, Debbie. I love your tutorials and teaching style. Thank you so much! I do have two questions though. 1) When I roll my pods I have trouble making the ends even and usually, the middle is a bit wonkey too. Any tips on how to keep them even? 2) How do you bake them so that the backs don't flatten. Thanks!

Hey Robie, thanks heaps - so glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. Okay to your questions 1. As far as shape goes all I can say is practice, practice, practice and take notice every time you do something. I probably created 50 or so beads before I was happy with the shape and they have certainly been refined over the years too. The more you make, the better you'll get and I can't really give you any more info than that. Just follow the instructions in the first video and keep practicing. Okay on to question 2. My beads simply get cured on a ceramic tile with a calico cover. Because I'm working with a firm clay I don't have any issues of getting flat backs - in fact have never really had those issues at all. Why don't you try the concertina paper method and cure that way. Sorry I can't help you any more on the shape but it's all about practicing. Thanks heaps Robie x

@@debbiecrothers1 Thank you. I thought of using the concertina method but was afraid the ends would droop without support. I'll give it a try.

Robie they should be fine but if you're worried you could always prop them up with a little tissue or paper towel. Or try embedding in cornflour or on some on the polyester batting. I'm not a fan of the latter two options but there is always a way!

Thank you so very much Debbie 💜💜 these are beautiful, I love curves and coils instead of angular 💜💜 in fact manny year's ago I saw the Kato artist, can't remember her name oops, who made these pod beads etc and I fell in love with them, it started my journey on learning about polymer clay 💜💜 you are such a lovely lady for doing these tutorials, again thank you so so much and blessings and hugs sent to you 💜🤗

You're thinking about Donna Kato, she's the same one who came with the recipe for Kato clay ☺️

Hi Tracey, I think Marjolaine is probably right....Donna Kato has created many pod beads in her time although she likes to cut hers in half so they are flat on the bottom (most of the time). So glad you like the tutorials and really happy to hear your story. Thanks for your kind words xxxx

Thank you Debbie for these explanations. Nice and easy 👍 do you use Kato clay for them ? I am afraid about the curls not holding shape if we use a more flexible clay. Any hints? 😘
@debbiecrothers1

Hi Marjolaine, so good to hear from you, thanks for getting in touch. This is a mix of kato and premo - sorry I can't tell you the exact ratio but maybe 2/3 premo to 1/3 kato or close to half and half. Cured at the kato temp as premo can handle a higher temp although colour change could be an issue for some colours. I don't really worry about it too much for my work. If you were using straight Premo you wouldn't have a problem with the curls holding their shape. I've certainly never experienced it that's for sure. Hope that helps xx

@@debbiecrothers1 I'm working mostly with cernit which is very flexible. I can't experiment this weekend but I will keep you informed of my experimentd 😉
