Most of you will already know that I am really not a fan of Sculpey III polymer clay. In my opinion it is totally unsuitable for any kind of professional polymer clay work. In this review I will share with you why I don't like this polymer clay, and why, in my opinion, it should be avoided.
Unfortunately, it is one of the less expensive brands on the market, and this results in many polymer clay beginners buying up a whole lot from their local craft store, before realizing that it just isn't suitable for the project they have in mind.
If you are one of those who find themselves stuck with drawers full of this stuff, be sure to watch all the way to the end of this video, where I'll be giving you a few ideas of what you can use it for.

I made the mistake of buying this to begin, like you said, because it was inexpensive. Now I exclusively use Premo and Souffle only. The color transfer on your fingers is also horrible with SIII.

I just completed my first-ever Sculpey project. The art shop only had Sculpey III so that's what I used. I actually found it very easy to work with and the project came out great. I do wish it was just a tiny bit more firm, because it's easy to damage the sculpture just by touching it in the wrong place or by placing it wrongly on the table. (The project was a prop dagger for a cosplay costume.)

Another good use for Sculpy III is to use it as a finger paint on top of a premo base. I call it schmooshing. Take little balls or snakes and smear into abstract designs, twisting with your thumb makes cool designs and textures ... layers form blended colors. Gotta use it for something 😎. Thanks for all you do!

I am just getting started with polymer clay stuff. I shop at Michaels and have bought a TON of Sculpey III and Michael's store brand. You think III is bad? Try Michael's store brand. LOL It's like working with gum. Warm gum. That said, I've made a TON of items from SIII. No regrets... I'm learning. :)

Thank you Samantha. Being new to clay, all tips are very helpful. Unfortunately, I bought a LOT of clay and can't remember where I bought most of them. I have bought lots of brands too and figured if there was a problem, it was me! Again, thank you.

Hi Samantha! I learned the smear from your site, and I have to agree, Sculpey III is perfect for it. That's pretty much the way I'm using up all my Sculpey III that I bought as a beginner a year ago. I hate to admit it, but I LOVE the teal pearl. If someone DOES like a color that's only available in Sculpey III, I use white or pearl Premo with alcohol inks, and I can find an almost perfect match. For the teal pearl, I used pearl Premo and Mermaid Ranger alcohol ink and came up with an amazing color that's extremely similar. I hope my tip helps people. Keep up the great work, Samantha! Your tutorials are amazing!

I prefer using this clay. I make and sell jewelry. I bake it for an hour and never has it snapped after baking. I haven’t noticed a smell. I usually use black, White and translucent.

I bought this one when I started playing with clay. What I did was reinforced my pieces with wire, fabric and paper. I also baked them less time and covered. Since it is too soft for canes, I let them rest on ice wile working the canes. I used like 5 lbs of this clay. I made it work! But wasn’t easy.

Hi Samantha. Im new at your channel. May I ask for your advice please. I use Premo and I face the problem of 'brittle'. I use a thermometer. I condition my clay very well (20-25 times). As I don’t like the odour I use alufoil pans and a ceramic tile to bake my project. I put my project in the oven from the very beginning while the oven is being preheated, and time starts to count for the actual baking when the temperature reaches the right degree. I bake long. One hour first time, and for any additional work, for another 1 hour. What do I do wrong? Some of the projects being thin, are more easily to brittle. Thank you for your help.
@JessamaTutorials
@JessamaTutorials 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe your oven thermometer isn't quite right? I've used oven thermometer's that haven't been accurate before. It seems like your clay isn't being baked hot enough. I'd suggest taking some sample disks of polymer clay and use them to test the temperature. Bake each disk for an hour, but put each disk in at a high temperature than the last. Test each one after they're baked to see if they snap. When one doesn't, but hasn't scorched then that's the temperature you should bake at.
@annitagalvan9049
@annitagalvan9049 5 жыл бұрын
Samatha, Thanks a lot. I will definitely do that. Actually last night I thought that the heat in the alufoil pans maybe is not hot enough to bake the project, but having got your reply about the thermometer which I TRUSTED IT DOING THE RIGHT WORK, I will follow your advice and let you know. Thank you so much for your help.

Can I just ask - do you not find Kato has more of an odour? I also feel like the colours are sooo limited in Kato. I’ve never had an issue with Sculpey 3’s smell....but it is def a terrible clay there’s no doubt there!! Also just wondering why you choose to cure it for 2 hours when the instructions say 15min - does this not make it more brittle? Interested in your thoughts...
@JessamaTutorials
@JessamaTutorials 5 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't find Kato to have much more of a smell compared to other brands, but I have heard that quite a few people do struggle with it's smell. I like Kato because it's easy to mix colors for things like canes where you want an exact color, but if you wanted a quick ready made color than yes it is quite limiting. I baked the clay for 15 minutes first, but it was brittle. I baked it then for an hour, and then two hours to see if it helped as with all the other brands I work with baking long increases strength, but it didn't work for this brand.

It seems to be ok with resin over it. That is the only way I will use sculpy 3. I have heard if you mix it with premo it is ok also. I haven't tried it but I plan to, as I have a quite of a bit of it.
@JessamaTutorials

I'm using up my sculpey 3 by mixing with premo. I still try not to use the mix for anything that would break easily, but it is an improvement. I use premo translucent mostly, because I can buy larger bricks of that. I won't buy sculpey 3 anymore, but I had bought it in the past, and then got some as gifts.

You can try adding 2 parts premo to 1 part sculpey 3, but it will make the premo more brittle. In my opinion it's really not worth working with. It will cause more problems than anything else.

KittyLoves8265 If it's too firm for you add mineral oil. It's it's too soft, you can roll it out in thin sheets. Now, wrap the sheets in white computer paper (lined paper can leave some ink lines). This will leech the oil out and makes it quite a lot better. These are just two tips for anyone who find it dried out or too soft.

This tutorial was very helpful. You just answered my question. My clay was so sticky, it wrinkled badly in my pasta machine. I thought I was overworking my clay too much and/or my machine was bad. Right now, I am just watching your tutorials and learning, haven’t really made anything yet because the clay was too sticky. I was playing with my granddaughter who loved it. She made food, cakes, French fries, hamburgers and such. Then she took them to school and her friends were SO IMPRESSED! They really wanted some and they did some trading. So I gave it all to her.
