Today I’ll be reviewing one of my favorite polymer clay brands: Kato Polyclay. I love to use this clay alongside Premo as both of them together cover all of my needs from techniques to temperature differences throughout the year. They’re the perfect match.
Kato has a lot going for it, as it’s a true artist’s clay, especially for those of you who create canes or faux techniques. However it’s also got some downsides which I’ll explain in the tutorial.
Sorry I forgot to mention in the video that Kato has a color mixing chart, that makes mixing your own colors really easy. Here's the link:

Thank you for the great review! It certainly matches my experience with Kato clay. I can't imagine working with any other. Especially now that they'd added a specific conditioning clay that allows you to make the clay as soft as you like, and the intense black that allows you to turn all of your color scraps into black clay so no Kato clay goes to waste. It's brilliant. It's like the perfect clay for me! Seems it's gotten quite popular as it's frequently out of stock in many online shops. I've been buying directly from Van Aken and Prairie craft.

Thank you for the link to the color mixing chart. I have mixed Kato with Souffle and Fimo Soft to give those clays more body for caning, and it helps take down the odor a bit. I smell the odor but it doesn't bother me. I like knowing that it holds such incredible detail when used in canes.

Good review although should stress how good the Kato colour mixing chart is. You only need to have the basic colours on hand to have access to a beautiful range of colours through mixing your own.

Jess I’m watching your clay review. Do you know much about Cernit? Thanx 😉👍

I'm not very familiar with Cernit. It's not an easy clay for me to get hold of so I haven't used it much. I can say that it's a quality clay. It's strong and comes in lots of different colors so definitely worth a buy if you can get some.

Hi Samantha! I love your videos. I have a question about kato clear liquid. If I am making a small planter and want to apply liquid polyclay to create a glossy finish (baking it first then using a heat gun afterwards to increase gloss). Will there be any issues with it running off a vertical surface while baking? I think the key is to apply it thinly. Or maybe I can heatgun each side while it's horizontal before baking it. Wish I can ask kato directly but I can't find contact info on their website.

A thin layer is key, yes. I'd also heatgun it before baking it to set it, since that will happen faster than setting it in the oven.

Excellent, I have just purchased some Kato when I got my Teflon sheets from Lucy's Clay Tools. So I am really pleased with this explanation. I live in Townsville so it will be a very useful clay for me, for the majority of the year. If you don't mind, what recipe did you use for the bluish green please in that cuff you showed us. It is a beautiful colour. I think we can buy the colour blending chart from one of our suppliers here in Australia. I hope so.

If your Kato clay breaks apart while going through the pasta machine, is there a way to reduce that occuring? For some reason this happens to me a lot, but I like kato otherwise

I keep reading that you need to mix one of the “neutral” colors into the “spectral” colors so they don’t look like cheap plastic. Does this mean, let’s say I have a green I like, I have to mix the translucent into it? How much of the “neutral” colors need to be mixed in so it doesn’t look like cheap plastic? I can’t seem to find a video of anyone actually mixing up colors with Kato so if you happen to have a video showing how you add your neutrals I would love to see it. Thanks for all of your videos.

I tried Kato clay many years ago and I hated them! I even contacted the manufacture because I could not get them to condition at all. They looked up the lot numbers and told me they were fresh. They suggested I place them in a heavy plastic bag and over cement I should beat them with a hammer! I did that and still they crumbled. I called them again and they sent me new ones which were slightly better.. I managed to make some very ugly beads out of the red and orange ones. I loved how light and hard they were but yes they are too difficult to work with. I’m thinking people really complained about them because the shop I bought them from no longer sells them.

Kato brand is awful, is very dry and hard to condition. I put petroleum jelly to soften it but it dries up very quickly, and when I pass it to the machine it breaks easily. Not sure how to make it work
