Tsummerlee AKA Teresa was asked a questions about the safety hazards of using polymer clay in your home oven and with the same utensils that you use for food items weather or not its safe to use these items for food once used with baking polymer clay. The question brought up a good point which seems to me no matter which brand of clay I myself had in stock that none of the manufacturers cared to make that a safety warning on their packages. While they warned against the use of clay with furniture, or curing in a microwave, using in a well ventilated area, not over baking or even not using cured polymer clay items for serving food or smoking products none of them stated what we have for many years just thought was the law of safety when using Polymer Clay and that is not to use the same oven or materials with food that you used with clay.

Also, I know the package doesn't say so but you can bake it at a lower temp but for a longer time (try 200 for 30 min per 1/4 inch. This also helps to keep from burning it. Another good tip is, completely cover your project with foil to seal in any gases that may or may not come from the clay when baking. Hope this helps! Dee

Manufacturers are careful to list disclaimers based upon controlled conditions. Most users do not always use the product consistently. When you bake polymer clays which are primarily Poly-Vinyl-Chloride, the plasticizers, which keep the clay soft, are evaporated by heat and deposit (think of steam) in an oily residue (containing PVC) into every crevice of the appliance you are cooking it in. Cooking food requires much higher heat, ergo you burn the residue & poison your food with PVC gas.

Yes I have had issues with items being burnt in one of my older ovens. Every time I had turned it on just to warm it up I could smell the fumes and it was not good. Thanks for your most informative comment. Its very much appreciated.

This is the only youtube video about safety of the polymer clay (that I could find)... Now people are starting to like more and do crafts with it. Concerning. Also, ''polymer clay'' is a name that lead costumers to mistake, because it ins't clay at all.

Very very very well done! Just for that, I'm subscribing to your channel. ;) In manufacturing, there are ISO standards that call for something called an MSDS, or "material safety data sheet." These reference and data publications are very specific regarding products that may cause harm. They include instructions for first aid and phone numbers to poison control and other agencies. A short version is usually included with home products: "flush eyes with water," etc.

Baking it until cured is one thing as manufacture suggests you do to bring the clay from its raw malleable state to one thats permanent, however if you leave anything in an oven for longer than it needs to bake or warm you will BURN it.

@tsummerlee Yes and not all that long ago Polyform had changed the chemical makeup of the Sculpey III and made it softer, I had heard then it was due to these ISO standards though they said they never felt the other recipe would have ever been of any harm it was just new changed in regulation which made them have no choice but to change it. By removing whatever they had to it made the clay even softer than it was before and many polymer clay artists complained.

Everyone has their own opinion but packaging says its not toxic and poses no risk unless burned, then it suggests you open a window and ventilate the area well with good reason.

I just learned about this baking clay stuff. I want to use bake and bend to make some toy figures. It says on the package it's nontoxic. But you are saying I should buy a new oven just for baking clay?

Studio has been discontinued from what I know. Perhaps this is why. Fact is I don't think they just now have this warning on packages, you may have a package you just got somewhere though they had long been pulled from shelves of craft stores & are no longer being sold. I am sure there is stock of it somewhere that is being sold out. Maybe because this warning is only pointed to those in the State of California its not there but being sold elsewhere but not being manufactured by Polyform anymore

Hi, responding to you from my other channel...I do not think it would be wise. I had a bird who just passed April 5th🦜😭 He was a quaker and I had him for 15+ years. Anyway Polymer Clay is listed Non-Toxic but there is not mention of such for animals so I personally don't trust it around my pets. They would make some beautiful beads and even cute charms I am sure any bird would be attracted to and love to play with but I am sure a bird has the power to break through even the toughest of pieces created once baked and cured. I have purcahsed many bird toys before and always see plastic pony beads, and wood beads used. They sell plastic beads for kids to play with at Michael's, etc.. and maybe even Walmart and those make perfect beads for our feathered family members.😉 All the best to you. Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to also comment with your question. Hope I helped. 👍🏻

Problem with toaster ovens is they are too small for sculptural work. Are there ones big enough to do a piece 8 inches tall ?

I have seen people use the New Wave Ovens or nowadays you can get larger Convection tabletop models of ovens so you can dedicate them just for use with clay. But most brands of polymer clay I am aware of ARE NON-TOXIC unless you burn them! What I would do with a large piece is make an oven in your oven. 2 Roasting Pans deep enough that on top of the other inside to inside if that makes any sense and clipped together to keep your item within it so no smoke or burn off of any chemicals can be possible to escape or leach off into your oven. I think its called tenting though some artists do this only to protect a piece from being exposed to the elements of the heat in the oven so it does not burn, the same can be done in this way I have explained can be used to keep your oven still usable for food. I have a dedicated toaster oven just for clay because when I use it there is a smell that is not food like for me if you know what I am saying. I had a nifty roasting oven, can't recall the brand name but it was much taller and bigger inside than the toaster over for larger items. Best of luck to you. Sorry it took me forever to reply, I don't use this account anymore as I have another channel I can barely keep up with (non-craft clay related) and I had a tough time remembering my password to sign in LOL

@@JanineMKartist I agree and having a bird myself I don't take chances but my bird is fine and is subjected to all sorts of smells and smoke from burnt foods anyway since I keep him in my dining room right next to my kitchen and I have had him for years. But don't cure clay indoors just in case for you or your feather-baby.

Perhaps manufacturers choose not to list gases released during baking because the levels are so low they pose little to no hazard. Other's, obviously, would rather more thoroughly cover they're arse. Human beings have pretty high tolerence to lots of nasty stuff. Now I want to buy a goldfish and see if it survives a baked polymer clay "mountain." I wonder....

I used my oven for this and it wasn't a very good idea. Go to ACmorre and buy a craft baking oven. I picked one up today half off for like $30! You could probably get away with a large toaster oven as well.

Anything you burn isn't safe for you. They have been telling us that food burnt on a grill can cause cancer. I've been using this clay in my oven for 15 years now and I'm fine. To be safe, if you make a lot of clay projects use a dedicated oven and tools, and make sure to time your items. If your afraid of burning it turn the oven off just before it's done but leave the item in to finish the last few minutes. It works great!

All Polymer Clay brands I am aware of are Non-Toxic unless you burn it. The fumes from burnt clay can not be good for anyone I would imagine. I have a bird and I do not use my home oven unless I am tenting something but rarely ever make anything large enough to need to do that so I use a dedicated for clay roasting oven which is only large enough to put on a countertop or I use my dedicated for clay toaster oven and both I set up outside on my back patio and do my curing/baking. Sorry for taking so long to reply.

You should not bake it in an oven YOU USE ALSO TO BAKE FOOD YOU EAT in case you burn it. Unless you wish to take the risk as the lady in her video said she or maybe others choose to do. The choice is yours to take because IF YOU BURN IT then it becomes toxic.I am sorry you are confused. I choose to not bake it in the same oven I use to bake or warm food I eat in. I have burned clay and the smell is not good and it has ruined my oven so that I can not use it indoors without a bad sickening odor.
