Video #676: The trick to keeping those ugly bubbles and blemishes from showing up, is to sandwich in between two ceramic tiles... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
* How to bake flat polymer clay in a tile sandwich.
* I received a question/request from another KZfaqr called SweetBioDesign, for a way to bake flat pieces so that they don't curl up after baking.
* I also had this issue way back when I baked directly on a ceramic tile, where I'd get little bubbles on the top and weird gaps and shiny spots on the back of all my flat pieces.
* So years and years ago, I started baking my clay pieces in between a ceramic tile sandwich.
* You need two smooth ceramic tiles with no embossed patterns or textured surfaces.
* The tile sandwich... place one tile smooth side up on the bottom. Then add a piece of plain office paper ontop of the tile. Then your flat polymer clay piece. Then another piece of paper. Then lastly, the other tile, smooth side down.
* Bake tile sandwich in the oven for one hour... at the correct temperature for the brand of polymer clay that you are using.
* The piece will come out perfectly flat and smooth on both sides.

Sometimes it is incredibly hard as a creator to soldier on when the workload gets heavy... but knowing that one simple video made the difference for one artist, between giving up or powering through the learning curve... makes all the hard work WORTH IT! ❤❤❤

@@PolymerClayTutor Cindy, I'm almost certain that you help and inspire more people than you will ever know. Not everyone comments - some people aren't good at typing, or use a tiny screen, or maybe have autoplay switched on so YT advances them to the next video before they can comment, even if they intended to. Key thing to remind yourself is that your sterling work, commitment, and generosity has reached more people in the world than you can ever conceive of. I hope you get that, and remember it when some days/weeks are (inevitably) shitty. Thank you so much from a newbie in the UK! 🤍

This video has been posted several years ago so maybe some of you already know this but it would be selfish not to share what works better than anything...Take your flat piece and put it in your oven and dont go over 175 F and bake for 20 minutes then turn up your oven to 275 F or the suggested time for your clay and bake 45 minutes and it comes out beautiful, flat and no bubbles. Do not take your clay out of the oven after the first low bake, just turn it up while its still hot..Works like a charm and to compare it you can pop in another flat piece when your temp reaches the suggested time at the normal bake and compare when your done :)

I’ve used this once and it worked perfectly! Thank you! I’m bummed my countertop oven thing (sorry… I’m baked 😜 and drawing a blank on the proper name… lol!) won’t go below 250, but at 175 in the kitchen oven during an AZ winter: entirely doable! In a few months I might get away with the low bake temperatures during the day in AZ. 😩🥺

Your tip is especially helpful in my case where I’m trying to customize a miniature house kit with textured type wall appliqués, so to speak. I don’t want faux brick from a printed piece of paper, so I made my own based on the specs of the cutout out of polymer clay, bake it, then glue it to the wood structure. I just need it to be flat and keep the elaborate nuances it took to make a brick-looking wall from clay. I made the same concept with “wall tile” with your method and it came out awesome! Thank you!!

What do you use? Can I use wooden chopping board instead?
@arianas9204
@arianas9204 3 жыл бұрын
@@darlingl929 Wood usually isn’t over safe. I would stick with Ceramic tiles, level/flat back sheets, etc. Or anything that’s safe for the oven, flat, level, and smooth and stays that way when put in the oven (so no buckling, warping, etc.). Two pieces of glass from picture frames for example would probably work. You’ll just have to be more careful to avoid breaking the glass or cutting yourself on the edges. Also with glass I think it’s best to place it in the oven as it warms and wait to remove it from the oven until it cools. Glass can crack or shatter if exposed to rapid temperature changes. Hope you don’t mind me answering.

Can you put curled earring pieces back into the oven in the sandwich to flatten them out or are they forever curled?
@221b-Maker-Street
@221b-Maker-Street Жыл бұрын
@@Adjum84 Hi Adam. If they're still softish then you _might_ be able to - if they're already solidly baked then I doubt it. I imagine they'd be too brittle by that point. It's worth a try with a test piece, though - you've nothing to lose. Cindy has video/s on baking times and brittleness etc that are worth your time. I think many of us are so itching to create stuff, we don't spend anywhere near enough time split-testing (I'm looking at myself here - I'm far too eager/impatient to Get Going!). It's the same reason successful artists and makers keep a sketchbook with trials, test-runs, and samples as a reference guide.

I put it in for 18 mins, but it’s pretty much the same. I did put wax paper instead of printer paper maybe that has some effect on it. I’ll keep trying, till I find what works best with this clay.

But I’ve tried this with some of my pieces, I generally have multiple pieces on one tile and I still get the funky back on some of them even with the tile sandwich. Should I bake each piece individually? Do you have any tips or recommendations that I should try? I’ve been using kato clay… not sure if I should make a switch to sculpy which seems like what most artists use…

Hi Cindy, I have baked my pieces on ceramic tiles for the first time but they started to break. I am not sure if they were brittle or humid because I just washed the tile before putting it on the oven. I only bake my pieces at 130C for 15 minutes as my pasta machine doesn’t do such thick sheets. And I have always baked this way. Only when I used the tile for baking did my pieces started to break. What am I doing wrong?? Should I bake for longer? Shorter? Lower temp? Higher temp??? I work with fimo though, premo is more expensive in UK. many thanks for your help. L
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
The brittleness isn't from humidity but from not being baked long enough or hot enough. 15 minutes is just not long enough... especially on a tile because it will take a little bit of time for the tile to heat up, so the heat is going into the tile rather than the piece. Make sure you're using an oven thermometer so you know the temp is correct. Cover your piece with a tinfoil pan and hen bake your piece for 1 hour. You will have much stronger pieces if you bake this way. I have several baking videos on my channel that will help. Good luck!

Hi! I was wondering if sandwiching the polymer clay pieces with the ceramic tiles would flatten out the clay because of the weight? Thank you!

I don't think it is the weight so much but just the fact that a warm air bubble has nowhere to go when there is a tile on top so, it doesn't pop out from the surface.
