Good luck using that on the train, on a bus, on very small tables such as cafès, in crowded spaces, on your legs. What you suggest is a very approximate workaround compared to a proper laptop.

One issue I'm having on an Alphasmart Dana is that I type too fast for the machine, and so if I begin typing at the beginning of a doc, the entire block shifts slowly and often misses some 30 percent of my keystrokes unless I type slowly. How does this handle fast typists?

I really like that they let you use rechargable AA batteries and recharge them in the device, I know the clunkiness of having to open the battery compartment isn't good for some people. I've always wondered why more devices with a USB port and normal batteries don't also include a charger for the batteries.

Thanks for the review and for stocking this! I really hope this one is a big success and we end up seeing a long-lived series from Kingjim and some healthy competitors. For the battery-type setting, I wonder if the "eneloop" mode activates additional protections for NiMH batteries. Wikipedia cites sources saying that NiMH cells can be damaged if they are discharged to unmatched voltages while in series. It would be even cooler if setting "eneloop" mode lets the device charge the batteries over USB, but wishing for that feels a little greedy when this device already checks so many boxes.

Pomera dm30, great product, useful for what it is, a pity is not touch screen and that the character pallet doesnt include any accents (é, è, ê, à, ó, ú, etc) and that is a MUST for many european languages, forget the QR option to send texts (SUPER slow sending option for long texts), buy a Toshiba Flashair card (not cheap though) instead to upload your files to Google Docs, true the instructions coming with the box are in japanese (but that is not a big deal). If theres ever a DM40 version coming in the future in the market including these little changes it would kill the Freewrite

the product page says 2AA batteries runs for only 20 hours! That seems like the only big flaw this has. Having to buy new batteries every 2 days if you were writing 10 hours a day seems ridiculous. You'd have to have new packs of batteries with you all the time.

I'm not very particular about the feel of my keyboard, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I'd say it's a little "clickier" than the scissor switch Mac laptop keyboard with about the same amount of travel. I'm comfortable using it for long periods of time. Traveling through a document is pretty slow for large files. Holding "Alt" and "up" or "down" gives you the same experience you'd usually get from "Page Up" and "Page Down" on a standard full-sized keyboard. As far as I can tell, that's the only way to move quickly though a document. If you type fairly quickly, you will notice the screen refresh is slower than standard screens, but I don't find it unbearably slow; it's much faster than e-readers typically are. It only causes me great frustration if I'm trying to hold down "left" and go too far before the screen refreshes. Same thing for "backspace."

I do have the Traveler & I absolutely love it, I've dreamed of something like that forever. Due to its cost, though, I tried looking around for cheaper options and I was curious to invest in the Pomera, but the problem is that if you don't write in English or Japanese, the Freewrite family is your only option - since I write in Italian, we use lots of accents and special characters that aren't present on English keyboards, so our options are sadly very limited :/.
@nord2992
@nord2992 2 жыл бұрын
Same problem here. I at least need to be able to load a DE (preferably CH) and SE Layout via software. Only Freewrite has this option yet. With the Smart Writter I could even switch the keycaps to my needs. Alternative: A Onyx Device + bluetooth Keyboard. As I want to write on a mechanical keyboard this alternative will not be cheaper but the combo comes with a e-reader and notetaking possibility. The downside: At least the Nova Air Combo doesn't come with a case that you can use to place the reader in a good position to use it with a keyboard. That will be unhandy. While one could figure out a solution at home it will definitly be annoying when one is travelling. Further I'm not shure if there is an onboard wordprocessor on the Onyx devices. Android wordprocessors could cause problem using them with an e-ink screen (like the notetaking android apps do on onyx devices...). I think there will be better solutions for those problems in the future but for now one is stuck with pricey semigood solutions. Furthermore apart from the pomera 6" you can basicly throw away all of those expensive devices when the battery dies.

Una lucina a LED davanti all'e-ink, tipo nuovo Kindle, ci stava. *sigh* Just got a Freewrite recently. This is why buying into the latest devices sucks; it seems like I wait forever, then finally settle on a device, and then a better one comes out a month later.

It does not have any lights, so you'll have to use it in a well-lit space. I agree that spell check would be a nice touch... I know I'm going to forget to run my files through spell-check after exporting them...

This thing looks like it was designed in the 90’s. Also, Eneloop is a brand of NIMH batteries. I have run into some equipment that asks you to define which type of battery you are using, my guess is because they have different methods of estimating remaining time on the batteries.

I wish someone would give the exact measurement from left side of left-shift key to right side of right-shift key. Then it will be apparent how close to a regular standard keyboard it is. Small keyboards are no fun for a touch typist. Oh, whoops, i see it is 17mm between the middle adjacent keys, while a standard keyboard is 19mm. For me it makes a difference but some may find it ok.
@a.m.bosworth
@a.m.bosworth 3 жыл бұрын
Quite honestly, as a touch typist, the hardest thing to get used to here is the JIS keyboard layout. Single and double quotes, as well as many other punctuation marks, are in different places from a standard English keyboard.
