Pond & Goldfish Stock Tanks Update

I've had several people mention that they'd like more content, so I will try to do some casual update videos to supplement and show what I've got going on. Today was a water change day for the pond and a look at the Goldfish stock tank that I'm prepping to house a few Ranchu Goldfish. This was just a quick re-planting of the lily. I am going to get some larger plastic planter boxes this weekend for the water lilies and focus on potting it so that it will be have room to grow into the new planter.

It has been years since I have seen a velvet ant. We had an invasion in Tennessee one year back about 20 years ago and they were EVERYWHERE!!! We were just amazed by them, when they showed up they left as quick as we saw them. Truly beautiful. :) Great job on the pond!

+The Quack Shack I've only seen a handful in our yard the past 5 years we've lived there. Usually just one at a time and months apart. I can't imagine an invasion of them. That's pretty cool. They truly are beautiful to look at.

Very cool! I've been looking for Butterfly Telescopes locally, but nobody has any. They are beautiful. Not exactly sure why, but Orandas are definitely my favorite and have been for a long time...but I've never owned a butterfly telescope...

+D Leal thinking about it. My main plan is to keep them, but the only goldfish I've had breed have been outdoors in ponds, so it may happen in these. Not sure if it will become a focus of mine or not yet.

Thanks for the creative inspiration. I live in a cold climate - Montana, way up by the Canadian border. I'd love to have an indoor/outdoor goldfish tank in ground and not at all sure how to do it. My idea is build the tank into the ground inside with a place that goes outdoors. Then come fall I can switch them back to the inside only part for the cold months. (November thru May) Our first hard frost is September - last frost, June 1st. If you have any pointers for harsh weather lovers I'd love to hear.

Try wrapping the root ball as well as some soil in some poly fill and some weed barrier to make a small planter and then put that in a pot with gravel on top of it you will lose less organic matter into the water

Thanks for sharing! I just subbed you. I am looking to do something like this next spring. Have 12 tanks indoors. Want a outdoor pond. I was looking at a 300, but after seeing your 100 gallon, I think the 300 will be too much for me. Thanks

Aww man u are so living my dream. I want a koa pond and a seperate turtle areas... ca wood and breed eastern box turtles to release to the wild to help out their numbers.. any advice buy a property to fit it... lmao good luck and new subscriber here....

Those goldfish and koifish are the ones digging out the dirt in your Lily's. that has happened to me a lot with my koi so what I do to fix it is put big stones on top that the kois and goldfish can't move easily.

Thanks for the tip! You are correct about it being the fish digging it out. I'll try adding some of the larger stones I have around the pond to the planter.

Just a heads-up, velvet ants are actually wasps. The ones you see on the ground are the female wasp, and the male wasp has wings and is smaller in size.

+Anonymous Muffin That is correct. I didn't want to go into too much detail about them, but they are wasps, but confusingly called velvet ants, red velvet ants and cow killer ants. They are beautiful though.

For some reason (in fish apps) I like to name a ton “chip” List of some other fish (names) (in pocket pond 2): -goshi -pasific (misspelled on pourose like that) -wave -magma -chad

Thanks for the sub. I think 2 75 Gallon sponge filters will do well, especially if you are in the shade and do partial water changes. I think water filters are my favorite filtration

How do you keep predators away from the tank? I.e birds, snakes etc

I know they are cold water fish but what do you do to the stock tanks in winter? Do you bring them in to your garage or something? I live in an area that will only have snow once in a few years and if water freezes it will probably be a thin layer, but I'm still concerned of keeping fish out.

+Chan these above ground will get too cold here during the winter. They will either need a heater or to be moved. I plan to move them into my garage before it gets too cold outside. I'll start heaters in the fall in order to Lee temps from fluctuating too much as the nights get cold.

What do you plan on getting for outside heater? I was thinking of doing this to grow out fry for the following year. Would one of these be big enough and would they still have to go in the basement if you use a heater?

If I filled a pond with tap water, and left it for about 1 or 2 days, would it then be safe for fish to be added?

They probably don’t, most ponds contain cold water fish like koi, goldfish etc

Good job. I have a few stock tubs outside as well doing similar to yourself or trying anyway. What gallon are your tubs? I'm looking for larger ones as my fancy goldfish are growing fast.

Get some Chicken wire or some kind of net on top to keep those predators away. Thats the biggest thing. Are you going to culture green water or are you going to keep in crystal clear for now?

MrKay I plan to culture green water in the stock tanks and I honestly don't mind it in the larger pond as long as I can see the fish to about 12-18" depth. They typically come up closer to the surface when I'm near the pond, so I can enjoy them. I like it because it hides the unnatural black liner and allows the fish to "disappear" to hide in the depths. But I do get a lot of comments about how to make the water clear with better filtration. Plan to get some netting for them soon to help keep out falling leaves. Do you culture green water?

Sounds good. Yes I culture green water, but I just let it naturally come about in the stock tanks. When i perform a water change, I put around 10-20% of the water back in and find that within a couple of days water culture becomes green again. Also, I let the green algae grow on either the sides or the bottom of the tank so the fish have things to nibble on all day long. I have duckweed on top to help with oxygenating water and that also provides cover from the birds, and the fish love to eat it.

you should look at the tuff stuff ones, I get 110gallons for only 60 bucks from my local farm store, they are nice and oval and my fish spawn like crazy in them

I wish I were your neighbor. Do you have a problem with predators messing with the ponds?

+Michael Wells it's a great neighborhood. Haven't had any predator issues at all here (knock on wood 👊) didn't get the grow out I was hoping for in them this year...started too late. The plants definitely did recover in here with a break from the koi

I don’t know why not. They make other plastics ponds like that. It wouldn’t be big enough for koi though.

need a heater if it gets too cold where you live. My goldfish survive in them here in southern VA. But I have added 300W heaters if it looks like it will get below freezing.

They are Aquatop CAF Sponge filters. I now run the 180gallon size in both of the stock ponds.

One stock pond had regular comet goldfish that had grown to about 3-4 inches and the other had fantail goldfish which many refer to as fancy goldfish. Orandas would also fall into fancy goldfish. There are about 20 or so types of goldfish that fall in he "fancy" category.

+priscilla martinez shade it and do partial water changes with cold water on the hottest days like I was doing with my pond in this video. Luckily my smaller above ground stick tanks are mainly shaded by the house and trees. Need to get a net for them to keep leaves out very soon.

Shocking them how? I don't have any $1,000 fish. The most I've spent is $50 one of the koi. The rest were $15 or less.

I would not dare allow my water to look that horrible and green.... That water in that pond, should be clear.... You should be able to see all the way to the bottom... Those poor fish....

Green water doesn't mean it's unsafe for fish. How many real ponds can you see to the bottom of? It actually makes them targets for predators if they can be spotted all the way to the bottom. It is an aesthetic. I liked keeping my water clear...hence the large water change during the extreme heat of the summer. I also got large bubblers to make sure I couldn't see to the bottom in spots because the top was agitated and offered spots for the fish to hide. But, green water doesn't mean "poor fish". read up on it.
