This video is part of an ongoing series - like a vlog - about our project aiming to RESTORE soil fertility in Valle de los Pedroches in Andalusia, Spain.
We are located in a landscape called Dehesa in Spanish. It is like an oak savanna and is said to be very biodiverse. However, much of it has been overgrazed and the yearly drought of 6 months with NO RAIN makes recovery difficult. Many good practices from other climate zones with frequent rainfall DO NOT WORK here and have contributed to the bad situation in the past.
First and foremost we are restoring soil fertility and DO NOT AIM to deliver a product into any market at this time. We are not doing agriculture or ranching in order to produce something and turn a profit. We see PROFITABILITY as an OUTCOME that will emerge ONCE we have restored the land.
Learn more about our project at: www.caimito.eu You might also visit our shop there to support this project.
If you want to know more who is behind this project: www.stephan-sc...
Locations in this video might be referred to using a designator. A custom map allows you to better follow along: www.google.com...
Some simple guidelines for commenting:
- Questions are far more helpful to other viewers than suggestions
- You are watching past events and we might have solved issues or moved on already
- Most people live in temperate climate zones with ample rainfall and good agricultural practices from there might not apply on our land.
- You are watching us learning and we all want to enjoy the journey and knowledge acquisition. Please refrain from telling us how something has to be done as your situation most certainly is vastly different than ours.
- Understand that culture, rules and regulations vary around the world. Be respectful when speaking about the people you see in the video.

I am in Northeastern Florida, United States. Zone 9B and plant Bermuda grass and Bahia grass. The Bermuda grass for me is easier to establish and will develop runners quickly. Excellent for erosion control. It certainly loves the heat and will survive 110 F no problem. After establishment in my climate it requires no management. Our main irrigation is focused on grass seed, young trees and shrubs, and tree nursery. Enjoy watching your daily videos related to your climate and property.

I would grow a lot of Myoporum Laetum, very fast growing, dense canopy, deep roots system, very drought tolerant. They can be keep as chop and drop materials.

For grasse, what is important is the number of leaves because they produce amount of biomass after the 3th leave. Did you do the math for the water stock to perform irrigation during the summer? Why filling a pond that you will use later for irrigation ? Why not going directly? I like your new projet, hope it will work

The pond is as big as was possible to dig in that location. It's 3,5m deep so it does hold plenty of water. As we do have a shallow well next to the outflow of the water reservoir we can use that - because it exists from before - and help out a bit. We did irrigation directly from that well and we pumped it dry several times. It took a day to refill. So now we have the pond as a huge buffer.

I'm also doing research on chicken tractors and it seems that the salatin design is very hot, which could be a big issue for your climate. Perhaps doing some different designs in year 1 could offer a chance to experiment. Suskovich might be a nice alternative.

I see what you mean. The other style has those taller arcs and is also quite simple to build.

For the cow, i think it failed because of animals density not beiing compatible with amount of food you can have in summer. You had to feed them manualy because you had too much. I'm sure cow would be easier if they were not hungry. Please show your math on food ration this time.

It fails for everyone if the sales price is below the production cost. Has nothing to do with plants or soil. CAFOs work due to economy of scale by reducing expenses

Hi, would planting sequoia trees make any sense on your property? Or growing them from seed? From my point of view, they originally grew in similar climates.

Hello, how do you see the future of the Miyawaki forrest? Will it work out for you, or do you think you will be losing more trees than anticipated? I have the same question on your irrigation system with the wobblers. Are your opening comments things that worry you, or does it go, more or less, „as planned“? Somehow I hear what you are saying, but I don’t know how you evaluate how things are going. Good? Bad? Soso? Did I understand that for now you will not continue with Vetiver. Is drip irrigation something you have considered in the past, but you don’t believe that it would work? sorry for bombarding you like that. It is, of course your prerogative to answer or not.

For the first part: ask me in 3 and 5 years time. It DOES go as planned. Vetiver isn't a topic for now but the nursery is there to propagate vetiver and other plants. Just not a priority for the moment. The irrigation system is #1 for the places where we did plant/seed something. Soon that will be done and then we can refocus. Drip irrigation works great and is just one tool amongst many. Wobblers are great when you have a larger surface to irrigate.
