I concur, the Qjet, properly set up, is a wonderful street carb... and using the stock metal fuel line is quality anti-vice grip garage professionalism.

That's going to be a regular part of the process with engine run stand break ins here. Sacrificing a few sets of valve covers across the various models so we can make sure everything is good and healthy.

Ima give you fellas a tip. You can do with it what you wish. Rhoads Oil Groove Fast Bleed Lifters. I won’t run without them. Never had a failure, since 1982. Will wind to 6500+ without issue. Suggest Smith Bros. Rods to maintain valve train control. They don’t deflect. Never been gapped at a light either. Ever. Congrats on getting her run in. 😉

Great job Rich, I have a 455 Pontiac that is a fresh build that the rear main leaks. It really sucks to pull the motor 3 times to fix
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 8 ай бұрын
Yessir! That's EXACTLY why we prefer to do our engine break ins either on a dyno or on an engine run stand! Did you do a rope seal in yours? Fortunately our 455 in the yellow LeMans has been pretty much flawless aside from killing mechanical fuel pumps

It sounds nice! Out of all the pontiac engines I raced for years the only one that ate a CAM was a 350 pontiac that my dad thought adjusting the rockers tight was the thing to do! LOL! Im betting yours was just a fluke. Have a good winter
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 8 ай бұрын
We're hoping it was just a fluke and we're on the good side now, going to check a few things after the break in to see how it truly went. Fingers crossed. We actually have 2 Pontiac 350 builds coming up, one is already torn down and waiting the other is... just waiting ;)

Hit up the local play it again sports on Cemetery rd and get some hockey pucks if you ever want to insulate it from the floor. Works great for air compressors too.

I built a Pontiac 400 over 25 year's ago... solid flat tappet cam.... roller rockers... forged pistons..she still purrs like a kitten today..even after too many to count ,,200 shots of nitrous.....,, great episode guy's..👍😎💯

Hard to beat a well built Poncho! We have our 455 LeMans that has been pretty much flawless other than mechanical fuel pump failures, and 2 350 Ponchos sitting around here waiting for their turns. One of which should be pretty fun and interesting so stay tuned! ;)

@@LucoreAuto will do... That was my first complete rebuild of an engine... I'm pretty impressed with myself. 😆,,,, I was just a 20 something year old kid back then... I'm my garage... But it has been a great engine... Never a problem with it.. it sets around,, I get in it and she fire's right up like a champ every time... Idk what the problems are with all these cam lifter failure's now days.. I never considered brake in oil. rpm.. cam break in.. I knew nothing about all that back then.. I just got it running and drove it... Raced it . For going on over 26 year's now I think.. no zinc additive.. just castrol 10/40... All its life.. from break in .to today.. stock 350 crank ,,rods . In 400 block.. 406 ci.... .30 over Forged pistons.. nice cam n 6 x worked head's.. old torquer single plan.. 750 race series carburetor.. roller rockers... A good running engine... Looking forward to more poncho stuff... See ya in the next great episode. From Lucore Auto👍😎💯

@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 8 ай бұрын
Hopefully yours goes right the FIRST time and you don't end up going down the nightmare tunnel of camshaft failure that we did on this one! One and done is the way to go! The engine was previously painted this color when we got to it so while we had it out just refreshed the paint in the same coloring. We always are happy to keep our Ponchos Poncho blue!

Crane once recommended preheating engine oil on stove before startup. Lately there have been lots of flat tappet camshaft failures for some reason (metallurgy) for all makes ?

I thought a flat tappet cams lifters don't pump up. You did say in earlier video this is flat tappet. I may be confusing flat tappet with solid lifter. I'm pretty sure it was the same thing back in the day. Solid/flat or hydraulic.
@vhp454
@vhp454 8 ай бұрын
Hydraulic flat cam lifters do pump up. Oil pressure pumps them up. Old school technology. Dont over think it
@richardlucore6813
@richardlucore6813 8 ай бұрын
Solid lifters don't pump up. They require maintenance and lashing the valves. They are more for high reving engines. Hydraulic flat tappet lifters regulate lash with oil pressure and self adjust for valve Train Wear. But in high rpm range they can pump up and "float" the valves.

I was just wondering when Rick was going to get back to the Capri? It seemed in the last video, which was months ago, that it wasn't that far from being a driver. Also what progress has been made on the 2.8L V6 rebuild?
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 8 ай бұрын
Well you see, what had happened was... The green Capri you are correct is very close to being a driver. Needs a few things, buttoned up, and needs to get some sort of trunk floor fixing done then it's ready to putter around. The 2.8 V6 is... sitting on an engine stand in a bag with a pile of parts just waiting on it's turn. Customer stuff comes first so with us being as busy as we have been that project is off the burners at the moment... probably not even on a hot plate unfortunately :(

Rockers or rocker balls sounded noisy, are they new? Did you use Poly locks to set preload on lifters?, them factory nuts never say put.
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 8 ай бұрын
Factory nuts, factory rockers. Not sure what you are hearing? Especially after the failure of the first camshaft we're trying to be extra extra sensitive to sounds or issues?
@hydroy1
@hydroy1 8 ай бұрын
@@LucoreAuto I stopped using them factory nuts decades ago. Poly Locks are to cheap not to use and they say put every time you set preload on Hyd or clearance on Solid lifters. They made a believer out of me, and they fit right under the factory 400 valve covers.
