Think i i did 6 motor swaps in 10yr span last motor i dropped in was a 428 That 4 inch stroke paired with a 4.10 running gear didn't suck as bad as it sounds Lol been sitting over 10 yrs now about to get it back going again and give it to my dad make it stock except few minor things like the steering box off a 94' jeep grand Cherokee, and a few other suspension mods, I never had the luxury of aftermarket heads probably why I don't why i don't remember those fancy lookin gaskets lol

Hi, you used ARP lube instead of engine oil. The thourke spec for engine oil on the head bolts is 100 ft lbs. With the ARP lube it should be about 85 ft lbs. It is always less with ARP lube. I used ARP studs on my mains for my 436 build.
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 4 ай бұрын
Not exactly. When using ARP bolts/studs you need to follow their instructions. My kit from ARP specified 100 ft. lbs. using their assembly lube. Here it is... tech.arp-bolts.com/instructions/190-3607.pdf Thanks for the comment!

one trick for taping flanges is to tap around the perimeter with a hammer to "cut" the shape instead of a blade

Yup, that works too.. that sometimes does not leave a "crisp" edge, so I just use the blade. Thanks for the comment!

Need to be using a torque angle meter after as well
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 5 ай бұрын
Ummm, no. That tool is ONLY used when it's the spec. For example, if the assembly requires 60 ft lbs. + 45 degrees. That means you hit 60 with your torque wrench, then tighten it another 45 degrees. (That's a higher overall torque) Hope that makes sense.
@benjaminredington2905
@benjaminredington2905 Жыл бұрын
I noticed here you torque head bolts to 105. I am looking at my 1968 service manual and it says 95. I mention this because I just finished putting my oil pan on and realized I used your 110 on rear main cap in another video, and now see manual says 120 (wondering if I should take the pan off again). 10 lbs. maybe is not critical, but wondering why one video is 10 under and here is 10 over the documented spec. Love your vids though, I am following all the way through. Great stuff, just curious about these value discrepancies since everything else is so precise.
@FastMonty
@FastMonty Жыл бұрын
Great question, and sorry for the conflicting info. The best source of "standard" torques is on Butler's site... butlerperformance.com/p-34888-pontiac-engine-torque-specs.html That said, if you're using Edelbrock heads, that instruction sheet says 100 ft-lbs. (So, pick 95 or 100) As for your rear main, again my apologies... if the engine is out and you can easily get at em, go to 120. Otherwise you're right, 110 will be fine. Hope that helps!
@benjaminredington2905
@benjaminredington2905 Жыл бұрын
@@FastMonty Thanks for the reply. I had accepted the rear main value because it was a BOP seal (not the "waxed rope" seal the service manual is replacing). Rechecking, BOP instructions do state "torque main cap bolts to manufacturers spec" so - my bad. Using original heads and standard gaskets, 95 is correct and cross-confirmed on the Butler site. For anyone still reading - I apologize for overlooking early video comments about Edelbrock head instructions, and have now realized I also followed the video torque sequence, which was incorrect for stock iron heads (again, even listed separately on Butler). Everyone, please enjoy FM's stellar work but avoid my mistakes and check the specs for your individual application and/or combination.

What did you do with your oil dipstick tube? I'm building my '66 421 engine now and the dipstick tube interferes with the flange on the Edelbrock head. Not sure if I need to re-orient it since I'm not seeing how the OEM alignment between the head and the manifold will ever work?
@FastMonty

Great question Curtis. My Canton pan has a provision for a dipstick tube. So, my stock hole was drilled and tapped, and plugged. The new dipstick tube had to be bent to avoid the headers, etc... What I can't remember is if you can bend the stock tube. Sorry, I'm not much help on this one. Can you bend the tube slightly?

I’ve watched this video a few times, really helpful. My heads are installed and I’ll be firing up the Pontiac soon. What is a first heat cycle? I don’t need to break in a cam or the engine. Should I drive it around the neighborhood to get it up to temp? I don’t think I can idle it in the garage without poisoning myself so it at least will go down and up the driveway. Should I hammer it to give the bolts a good stretch or just drive Ms Daisy? Thanks, Dave
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 8 ай бұрын
Good question... one heat cycle, is getting the engine up to temperature. Yes, you can drive it around the block a few times. No, I wouldn't hammer it. If it's a new rebuild of the engine, you should be using break in oil... drive it about 100 miles, also NOT hammering it. Then change the oil, AND re-torque the heads, AND check valve lash. Have fun!

Sorry to hear that... make sure you double check that temp. For example, use a laser thermometer and pull a reading from the cross over. Good question... I don't know the actual spec. you should at least be able to get your fingers in there. So many things may have changed over the years, with your car, engine mounts, the pan itself, etc... it should definitely NOT be touching the cross member. Hope that helps!

I only have one cooling port on my Firebird. My Edelbrock Performer heads came with one plug and one cooling connector. Perhaps they should have included the extra hardware. I need to locate the extra plug needed, but it seems to only come in a kit with extra parts not needed. .
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Gray... good question. "Standard" is to have one nipple on the passenger side head, and a plug in the driver side. I modified mine to T off the coolant from both heads in the rear. (Check out my Pontiac Head Cooling video, which also has an AN hose tutorial) If you want to add the nipple on the driver side head, the thread size on the Edelbrock head is 3/4 NPT. You can use standard 5/8" rubber hose, or switch to AN style like I did. Hope that makes sense?

install heads properly? you're thinking a bit too much into it. if the heads and block deck are milled flat, bottom tap the 10 head bolt holes, drop a new gasket in place, drop on the head, tighten the 10 bolts in a spiral pattern from center, 35-70-100 ft. lbs. you're done. it's not rocket science. with a 9.5 cr pump gas motor, all that sealer is unnecessary. its only going to make a mess, you'll have to scrape and grind off later, if you ever need to pull the heads for some reason. ask me how I know....after 40 years of building these.
