Pool Test: Which ChatterBait is best?

Bladed jigs are all the rage for both bass and redfish, and there's a great reason why: They're extremely productive. Nothing puts off more vibration than a bladed jig.
Of course, the original is the ChatterBait, a product that's now produced by Z-Man, but other companies have come up with their own models, and each has its own bells and whistles that makes it productive.
But that doesn't mean that each is necessarily as good as any other, and to find out what they're strengths and weaknesses are, we headed to our neighborhood pool, loaded up with underwater GoPros and seven of the most popular bladed jigs.
If you've seen previous pool tests, you know we like to give scores to each of the baits we test, and we did that with the bladed jigs as well. We judged each on sound -- obviously the most important factor. Bladed jigs give off a ton of vibration, which helps them get noticed by fish, so you need that sound to draw attention, particularly in dirty-water conditions.
We also ran them as slowly as we could in the pool to see if high speeds were necessary to get the blade to chatter. Being able to work a bladed jig slowly is crucial to its productivity.
We also scored each based on price. Some of the bladed jigs are insanely expensive, and we wanted to see if that necessarily meant they'd look better in the water.

Great information as usual, thanks. I have had good success with the Delta Lure bladed jig with the copper blade. Truthfully, I bought that particular bait because of the copper blade. For some reason, I have tremendous success with reds on any bait that has copper color as opposed to gold. The same holds true on the Johnson weedless spoons; copper will out catch gold 3:1. I also hve a couple of the Z-Man bladed jigs with their Diesel Minnow; mixed results.

This is great, I've been looking for a test like this to see if the higher priced models are worth it. Think I'll stick to my original Chatter Baits, I'd be too scared to lose the Jackhammer lol.

With the ChatterBait is actually doing is displacing lots of water in a side to side pattern. Definitely great for triggering the lateral line in murky or stained water.

Thanks this was one of my request. That original Chatter Bait with a Lemonhead Matrix Shad trailer is a killer on Redfish. Changer your speed of retrieve and pop it on the way every now and then it is a Killer . You can flip it in and around wood. Bass love it. Its one of my confidence Baits

Would have been cool to see the Zman custom chatterbait (Tackle Warehouse exclusive). A lot of people have said it’s a cheaper Jackhammer yet better than the rest of Zmans chatterbaits.

The booyah mele sounds like a little dirt bike or something under the water lol.... I always find myself always falling back on the original chatter bait, I just have ALOT of confidence in it and it produces well for me where I fish and plus it doesn't empty the pocket... great review!

Great test , I love to take a black sharpie and color my blades black , seems to make a difference, especially in ponds in south Louisiana. But wish the prices were more affordable or a tax write off 😊

I was hoping you had a humdinger zigzag and a delta lures bladed jig to the mix, my preference is the delta lure one and I used a matrix shad as a trailer.

Looks like you might want to do a round 2. If you do I recently picked up the Zman Diezel chatterbait made specifically for inshore salt water. I've only had a chance to cast it a few times but it vibrates my rod like crazy.

You should do a test on the multi-section swim baits. I would love to see what they look like underwater. Although you may need to take a second mortgage to buy them for the test.

Nice video, I haven't noticed much difference in the amount of fish caught between original and jackhammer... I wish you would have tested the strike king rage blade it's better than the thunder cricket and cheaper

I dig the Picasso shock blade and Rage Blades-The OG Chatterbait is good but the hook stinks. I mash the barb down on them and use in a private catch and release pond I frequent.

Great video ,, am learning a lot from these pool test and watching all your video's ,, I know you use the H&H spinner bait alot ,, my question is ,, when would you use the Chatter bait over the spinner bait ?

I prefer the Chatterbait in really rough water, in stained water or along a rock jetty

The original was better before they changed the line tie but the hook on it sucks. I don't know why but that line tie makes a difference. Just thumps different. If you ever find original chatter baits with the old line tie they will catch them good like the jackhammer (until the hook gets bent).

ive had the old line tie on the original chatterbait straighten out twice on big fish. I was happy when they changed it, didn't consider the difference in action tho

@@davishatrel7337 yeah the new design is stronger for sure. Get around real hungry marsh bass and reds and it wont matter either way what line tie there is; they aren't picky. I notice a difference just bass fishing rivers and lakes for getting bites though.

I used the original until I tried the Zman Project Z with the weed guard. I can fish it thru all the junk and not hang up and the weed guard doesn't seem to effect hook ups.

Chris Smith the weedless is the best to me cause you can also fish it like a jog and don’t get hung up
