When I was a little kid I had a dream about finding a doorway in my closet that led to an alternate version of my room, where things were almost the same but not quite. Following yet another doorway led me to an even stranger version of my room. I kept following doorways, finding increasingly strange and warped spaces until it didn't resemble my house at all. All the while the sound of pulsing machinery could be heard softly in the background, but it would get louder and louder each time I would go "deeper" in. The final few rooms looked very similar to what you have created here. Pretty eerie.

I much prefer subtleties like that than some monster, although I do understand the feeling of being chased gets your blood flowing. Still, I like these videos and the games that rely more on the atmosphere and small events that can happen like the chair or some strange distant noises.. the mystery lets your mind make up what it could be, like reading a book.

So far my favorite take on the backrooms As the horror isn't a big video game scenario with a monster chasing you; but rather a slow desert-esque "you are kinda already dead, explore and get as far as you can" sort of deal, with a silent creep that follows silently and carefully instead as the monster
@Femroe
@Femroe Жыл бұрын
The monsters in other iterations on the backrooms are interesting as well, but at the end of the day, I agree. They aren't truly the focus of the backrooms, the environment is. Otherwise it might as well just be SCP - Pocket Dimension Version. The dread of exploring something that seems so similar to things created by humans, but so very impossible and completely deserted, like waking up and finding everyone else on the planet had disappeared and all of creation had been warped. Like a lucid dream you'll never wake from.. that's what I find interesting about the backrooms.

yes i think if you want to expand on the backrooms it is more about creating an infinite maze of new but equally empty liminal spaces. adding entities and people kinda ruins it, at most it would be better to only see traces of what might be. -Hearing disembodied and muffled chatter, but unable to find the source as if it is leaking in from the real world, maybe even a glimpse through a peephole/keyhole into a bustling food court but unable to be seen or heard or escape. -just enough soggy carpet water and half eaten granola bars in drawers and trashcans to keep yourself going as long as you keep moving (and you will to live can hold out), no matter how futile it probably all is. -just enough un-explained noises to keep you from escaping to restful sleep.

The concept of the backrooms in the very beginning, even before the popular video series, was always about applying the uncanny valley theory to spaces. Familiar yet off, not posing any real threat but still giving fear. Sure lots of people took this uncanniness and fear and ran with it but the core idea has always been about the space itself.

This is what I want from the backrooms/poolrooms: no running, no screaming, no jumpscares, no unnecessary generic monsters. Just a generally nostalgic-yet-otherworldly and slightly creepy vibe of the backrooms. And you get this vibe. Great video. Thank you!
@thijsjong
@thijsjong Жыл бұрын
The threat of the poolrooms is less imminent but not less real. Will you die from starvation?. Thirst? An infection or contaminated water. Or will you slip and fall? Will you find a place to sleep? Will you get stuck in a place where the water rises to the ceiling. Will you ever get out? If you dont lose your sanity first. No less nervewrecking then a monster waiting around the next corner to smash you.

What I admire the most is that you don't dumb-it-down for the masses with monsters, screams, or other low-brow crap. We're just allowed to take in the strangely familiar scenery which is enough to trigger uneasy quesions... Why is that massive hole there without any safety barrier? What's behind that dark corner? Why are those chairs placed there... Who would be sitting there? Was this place ever busy, bustling with laughing children?

People seem to be evenly split on the "monsters/no monsters" thing. I think that the backrooms/poolrooms can be done well with them or without them. I think that any kind of entity encounter in the backrooms should more play on the psychological experience of wandering a place like that. There are supposed to be places with no entities. That way when you do hear, see, smell, taste, and feel things that you think are a monster hut aren’t you’re psyching yourself out i. A place that is completely safe, meanwhile there are locations where monsters are and you have to think, even if it is ever so slightly even if it’s against your natural inclinations, “is dying to this monster better than being lost in these rooms, wandering alone?” The monsters accent the mental problems rather than being the sole cause of them (for the most part) that is how I would do the backrooms.

Returning to this video once again and all i can say is that this is a piece of art. There is no other video I have encountered that really captures the essence of the backrooms as well as this one. It invokes a feeling of mystery and fascination of the world which we just lose when we grow up and our view of the once magical world tranforms into something stale trough years of academia. It invokes the feeling of nostalgia like youre glimpsing into the world with a childs imaginative eyes but you know that, that simple and pure curiosness and raw wonder isnt there anymore and it leaves you with a empty and slightly sad feeling.

I think this is my favorite Poolrooms video so far, if only for the fact that there are faint promises of freedom scattered all over it that never come to fruition. You keep seeing what looks like sunlight just around a corner, only to find when you get there that it's just a slightly different shade of fluorescent light, or the reflection off a differently-colored tile. Those weird little "windows" are everywhere, suggesting the existence of an outside world, but the blackout curtains keep you from seeing what's on the other side and their locations don't seem to make sense with the building's geometry. You find a bigger window that seems to offer some view out of the facility, but all you see is a closed space surrounded by all the poolrooms you've just waded through, and it's hard to tell if the light above is the sky or just more artificial lighting. Then, as if to mock you, you stumble into a room decorated with a semblance of a blue summer sky, containing three brightly-colored slides that descend from... nowhere, apparently. There's a frustrating sense that you're constantly just on the verge of escape, but your hopes are dashed at every turn when nothing is as it appeared from a distance. The overturned chair at the end is the final unsettling touch, as you start to realize that not only is there no way out, something else might be in there with you. Excellent work man, hats off to you!

YEAH YEAH ! my favorite shot is at 4:30, because up until that point we've seen multiple hotel room looking windows blacked out with curtains, suggesting that even if there's no outside world behind them to escape to, maybe there's some sort of room w/ amenities to rest in, with a bed and a minifridge and a bathroom. but then we end up on the other side of one of those windows, and there's nothing there. no room. just more pool. and while we're processing the lack of anything, we get to stare out the window at even more windows, knowing that there's nothing behind any of them but more infinite pool. it rips away even the sense of hope for rest if not escape

I agree. Stephen King's ideas of horror resonate with this as well. He described the horror of the weird as such: 'Horror is going home to find everything you own has been replaced by an exact copy'. Also, 'Horror is walking down a dark hallway knowing you're going to be grabbed- then turning around to find nobody there.' In an interview, he also said something akin to: 'You know what horror is? What's really scary? There's 3,000 people in the audience. Statistically, about 10% of people forget to lock their cars regularly. That means there are about 300 unlocked cars in the parking lot. See, now you're thinking- wait, did I lock my car? But what you aren't thinking about is how you're going to forget wondering that by the time this interview is over. You also aren't thinking about whether or not, if you did leave your car unlocked, how easy it would be for someone to crawl in the backseat and lie in wait.'

Every time I try to get to the surface and can’t make it, I think I’m going to drown and have it be the end of me, I give up and just inhale the water only to discover that I can breathe under water and had nothing to worry about the whole time. It honestly never felt creepy or anything, just like super weird and foreign, but in a pleasing way. I've randomly stumbled across this video and have no knowledge of what it's meant to be. But my first thought was that it reminds me of those dreams that seem completely reasonable at the time, but then you wake up and realise just how surreal it was.

The scary thing is that places like did did exist back in the 80's and 90's. They were nowhere near as extensive as this of course but as a child they seemed endless. There was one here in Ireland with horrid blue and white tiles everywhere, multiple pools of differenet sizes all connected by tiled halls. There was one single hall, with water just up to a childs knees, that went around the back of one of the pools and came out at another. It was likely only a few meters long and just had one single bend but to my imagination it seemed to go on forever. I hated pools anyway and couldn't swim so fear was always my companion in these places, which of course just makes them seem so much more daunting. When I see photos and videos like this it puts the shits up me to no end. I know there are artists who create these images and they think its all fake but they dont realise how close they are to reality. It is only the scale that is off but to a child this is exactly how it used to look. I wonder if someone built a place like this today how popular it would be? I think I would go just to see if I could stick it for more than 5 mins without pissing myself.

It always starts out cool and interesting until that feeling of paranoia setting in and the anxiety building as the player starts to realize he doesn't know how to get out and the back rooms are much larger than first expected and he could be lost here forever. Great video!

It's very eerie to me how the part at 4:06 reminds me so much of an indoor hotel pool that I visited as a child. Up until that point, my experience with pools were always outdoors and filled with the voices of happy children underneath a blue, sunny sky. However, this hotel pool was almost exactly like the one depicted in the video; it had an eerie glow from the artificial lights, was deathly quiet, and had the same white tiled floor and walls that reminded me of a doctors office. It even had the same window looking out to a dark, concrete hotel complex with no trees or sunlight in sight.

My ex girlfriend had an apartment building public hottub that was very much like this, only much tinier. Always had the weirdest vibes going in there, only did a couple times. I mean, it was in the basement of a highrise building built sometime in the late 80s. Definitely period correct.

*I feel like I just stumbled into a nightmare of never ending claustrophobia and hopelessness. The room with the clouds was the most depressing because it reminded of the freedom that would never come to be again. The room with the hole in the floor gave off the faintest glimmer of hope that there might be a possibility of an permanent end to this eternal dimension of desolation.This is The Line in Saudi Arabia. They're building it right now!!*

This really is an audiovisual masterpiece. It’s EXACTLY like being in a dream where everything is always changing and the architecture of the buildings is completely impractical. The fish-eye lens and videotape fuzz really sell the concept and help suspend disbelief. Dreams like this were usually very unnerving to me as I didn’t know what my brain was going to conjure up next, so watching this controlled environment is especially nice because you get to actually look around for a while without being interrupted by someone or something. First-rate.

your walking speeds and the way you meter the footsteps are what make this feel absolutely convincing. Hell, the sound design as a whole is stellar. The way the florescent bulbs hum at different frequencies... some must be older than others, right? If the lights start singing higher and higher that means I'm getting closer to something... right?

10/10 on creating the scenery of the Poolrooms. I felt at peace here due to no form of danger present, until the end when the sound was heard and we noticed the fallen chair. That's when I was like, "Oh my.....was something there?" Now I am anticipating a part 2. What was that, that was following us?
