Merry Clayton will always own this song. No other singer can sing it like she does.

The 3 Royal queens of all American music. These ladies did some fine singing and rarely ever get the proper credit for it. You are right!

had the honor of happening to be in a club she'd played in NYC in the 70's and actually got to meet her briefly. telling you, she owned what she sang. powerful voice! this might be the stones song as they wrote it, put it out and it's 'known' as theirs, but here? please. she owns it. the vid might have some faults here and there, but still. this woman is a powerhouse! thanks so much for this upload.

There are only two songs that can actually make me misty eyed; Bobby Womack's bone chilling howls in "Across 110th St.", and the way Merry hits those notes when she sings "Fame, Murder! It's just a shot away!" On this song!

a friend of mine explained this to me once (both of us are white; she was long time married to a man who was not and they had kids). has to do with how kids grown up. you're black, latino, from the age to walk often you're encouraged to dance, sing even, enjoy that music! so .. from an early age comes a physical ease with music. close as I ever came to 'getting it.'

Well I'm white and my parents were HUGE music lovers as am I, my earliest memories of are all of us kids singing and performing for the folks (pretty badly, but we tried). I started playing the drums at 12. So whie I do agree with your theory, it makes sense. I also think it just has to do with being around and hearing music all the time. Even if you are white it will sink in, and you will develope a sense of rythm. The off-beat clapping is just a pet peeve of mine.

@valerysgirl amen. Being a white guy in his 30's, I miss singers like this too; they had soul and they knew how to put that into their voice... death to rap, bring back the soul!

Seems like I heard an interview of her on the radio a long time ago, and she said she was very pregnant when she recorded this. For years I thought the band was Jefferson Airplane cuz I don't think the Stones ever used a female in the group... (before or since?) Anyway, one of the greatest of the great rock songs EVER (still gives me goose bumps) - and her voice helped make it that. (I'm talking the Stone's version of course) I just love it...

Pleeeeeze bring back singers like this...please...the younger black girls have no soul like this. What happened? Rap and the nasty lyrics has taken over...please bring back soul and hope for rap to die.

@BenjyBronky completely agree! Also, why do old / stiff white people always clap on 1 and 3 at a concert instead of 2 and 4 like normal people? As a white person and a retired drummer it just annoys the hell out of me. I mean look at the crowd you'll see most clapping with the bass drum instead of the snare drum(like the back up singer is doing). I dunno it's just a pet peeve of mine. You'll never catch a black person clapping on 1 and 3....ever! Get it together people!!!

HAHA! Sounds like a similar story I heard about Teena Marie standing backstage, refusing to go on for a performance until the concert promoter paid her the other half. That's right! The best appropriation of the "b*tch better have my money" ethos!

Why do you have to take it to race??? Black / White / Cuban and Asian can sing soul / rap / country / pop / (every style of music).
@valerysgirl

Well, not meaning too it is just most soul music in the past was sung by great black artist. It is my preference and it is not a race thing. Please don't make this out to be more than what it is.
