There's something special about sports movies. Especially the ones based on true stories. After we watched Miracle we got so many suggestions to watch Rudy which is one that neither of us have ever seen. This one didn't disappoint!

Yep, he's wearing the plaid cap! When the crowd started chanting "Rudy!", Ned Beatty turns around and looks at him (28:16) Of course, it looks like he's surveying the crowd, but I believe Ned was acknowledging the real-life Rudy!

Rudy became a motivational speaker, wrote at least one book about his journey getting admitted to Notre Dame, and then walking on, making the scout team, and then finally dressing for the game and playing in the very last game of the year, getting the final sack. He appeared at many ND games, signed books etc. I've talked with him and shook his hand a few times. He then lobbied the Director of HOOSIERS to film his story for years, and the Director finally agreed. So Rudy continued to "hustle" his story into Irish legend. I went to Notre Dame myself. Ironically, I worked 3 summers at a steel factory to help pay my way through. I was a freshman 2 years after Rudy graduated. So there were seniors and juniors on my dorm floor who had known Rudy, and that's how I first heard of his story long before the movie. There was a huge picture in the Student Union of Rudy making that final sack vs Georgia Tech. So that wasn't exaggerated. The greatest accomplishment was persisting to try to get admitted to Notre Dame in the first place. In order to do that, he had to get good grades at the Holy Cross Junior College to even have a shot. That required a 2 year stint at Holy Cross. Only then could he be admitted. And Notre Dame doesn't accept many transfer students because there are so few spots, even back then. Most people think Notre Dame is this gigantic school because ND is well known. But it's not an Ohio St, a Michigan, an Oklahoma etc with 40,000 to 60,000 students. In the 1970s, Notre Dame had about 6500 undergrads, 8000 total w graduate students. My graduating class had 1600 people. Schools like Ohio St had 10,000 to 12,000 students a class. So GETTING INTO NOTRE DAME and graduating was Rudy's biggest accomplishment, not that one play.

I wonted my daughter to run track at Notre Dame but they didn’t think to much of her. She ended up running for another university buy the time she graduated. She was a two time first team all American, finishing second and seventh in the country. Her times are faster than anybody at Notre Dame. Even though this did not happen for her at Notre Dame, she did have the coaching staff in her senior tell her that they should have recruit her. She ended up graduating number one student in the medical school and held eight school records. Sometimes universities can’t see into the future.

As a Hoosier that lives 30 minutes from Notre Dame, I've been to most the places that are shown in the movie. I was an extra for 3 days, but you never see me. The cool part about the last game is they filmed it at halftime of a real game so that they could have a full stadium. Back in 1987 they (same director and writer) were unable to get the 20,000 seat gym (Butler U) for Indiana's high school state final in the movie "Hoosiers." We did what we could with about 6000 extras, moving around the gym to where the camera was pointing to look like there were more fans then there really was. So, they made sure to get a crowd for this movie.

I was at a 1992 ND vs BYU game where they were shooting some "game day atmosphere" footage for a movie I later found out was Rudy. We were watching the cheerleaders and Marching Band march pregame from the Golden Dome steps to the stadium. I noticed the cheerleaders wearing older "vintage" 70s type uniforms and groups of people dressed in 70s type clothing. (I went to ND from 1978>1982). So I knew something was up because I recognized my era uniforms. We were very close to where they were filming and must have just missed being in a scene or 2. And yes, the game scenes in the movie were literally filmed at halftime of the later Boston College game so they could use the bigger crowd to add realism. In Hoosiers, Hinkle Field House was used the bball game sequences for the State Championship. Because that's where the actual 1954 Milan State Champ game was played.

Rudy is from my hometown of Joliet, IL. They made some changes to his high school in the film, which was also my brother’s alma mater. Joliet Catholic was all-boys until the early ‘90s, and the school colors were brown and gold. They are still a football powerhouse, though-they unfortunately lost the state championship game on Saturday. Rudy still makes frequent appearances at local events.

"Rudy, are you ready for this, champ?" "I've been ready for this my whole life!" "Then you take us out on the field." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Lisa Varga. Location Location Fact: One of only two movies shot on Notre Dame's campus. The other was Knute Rockne All American (1940). Casting Notes Fact: Ned Beatty plays Sean Astin's father. The year before, he appeared in Prelude To A Kiss (1992), in which he played the husband of Astin's real-life mother, Patty Duke. First credited movie role for Vince Vaughn. Cameos Cameos Fact: The real D-Bob cameos as the bartender in the movie. Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger appears in the final six minutes of the film, the real-life Rudy as a Notre Dame fan sitting in the football stands. Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger can be seen to the left of his Ned Beatty. Rudy is wearing a plaid driving cap and a dark coat with a white fur collar. Later during the cheering, Ned Beatty turns and playfully bats at the real Rudy. Historical Fact: Rudy (Sean Astin) runs his fingers down the list in a close-up two times. The first time he starts on one name, the second time he starts on another name. The two names he starts his finger on are the actual names of the two players who picked him up and carried him off the field. In the movie, Rudy is portrayed as having largely gone into the steel industry after graduating high school. In reality, he served four years in the U.S. Navy as a yeoman on a communications ship, which is never mentioned. According to Rudy, he has no brother named Frank (Scott Benjaminson) in real life. The character of Frank is all of the people who told Rudy he couldn't do it rolled into one person.

In reality the head coach tried to send Rudy into the game, but the offense was on the field, so Rudy actually told him that "I can't go in, I'm a defensive player." Which angered the coach, but just as he said that the offense scored again, so then Rudy got sent in.

@@imbatemanI remember hearing that the jersey scene didn't happen that way either. The coach had said that if any of his players had come to him like that and put their jersey on his desk, they wouldn't have ever gotten that jersey back. There were two underclassmen bench players that approached the coach or maybe even the coach approached them, and they had a meeting. Each player offered to let Rudy have their spot for that one game, because they would have opportunities the next season to play but were unlikely to get in the game at all anyway, and this was Rudy's last chance to even get on the sideline.

Coach Devine (former Breen Bay Packers coach) was actually very supportive of Rudy and instrumental in him coming back to the team. The Rudy chant never happened and it was Devine's plan t play Rudy. The whole team didn't leave their jerseys. It was only the captain and another player, and it was to ask for Rudy to dress. He played 3 total plays and registered a sack. The players really carried him off, but another player was carried off in 95. A few years after this came out. The coaches were all really supportive of him. Also, Joe Montana was on the team at this time but was injured for the season and sat on the sidelines. Montana's absence on the roster do to injury actually led to the open space for Rudy. Montana called the carry off as a prank, but I think he was just sorta jealous of the attention at the time.

Rudy was in the movie sitting behind the parents at the game. I met Sean Astin at a convention and talked with him about Rudy and not the Rings Trilogy. Rudy is a movie that means allot to me. Invincible is good movie about a fan who made the Eagles by a publicity open tryout. It is a true story. Running Brave is about an American Indian, Billy Mills, who won an Olympic gold medal. American Underdog is about Kurt Warner who went from the scrap heap to the NFL Hall Of Fame as a Quarterback.

It’s nice to see this great movie being reacted to, I have few recommendations for sports movies Pistol Birth of A Legend I think 1989? It’s based on pete Maravich who was considered one of goats in basketball, his college records still remained unbroken for close to 60 years, 44.2 points per game for 3 years, if you can’t find the movie, LumaFlix on here have full movie, Also next recommendation is Rebound: The Legend of Earl The Goat Manigualt I think from 96? It’s very tragic movie, he was the greatest player ever that never played in nba Last recommendation - sixth man with Marlon wayans it’s great movie I appreciate it if y’all ever got to see this comment, I’m deaf sometimes captioning is off and names can be mistaken, the husband - you kind of look like you could be octokrools older brother lol

Yes, Jerry Goldsmith was one of the great film composer’s of all time. He died in 2004 and he is sorely missed. He also scored “Hoosiers” which is from the same director as “Rudy.” Another great sports film and his score is beautiful.

Not many people mention it (so forgive me if it's already been acknowledged) but this film also has very early roles for both Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn (who went on later to make Swingers together).

Such a wonderful story. I love true stories. Here are several more true life stories you should react to. Remember the Titans. Lorenzo's Oil. Secretariat. The Fighter. Seabiscuit. Searching for Bobby Fisher. Beyond The Sea. We Are Marshall. Here are several that aren't true stories but great movies. Rigoletto. The Shooter. Rocket Gibraltar. Legends Of The Fall. Dragon Fly. Dirty Dancing. Regarding Henry. P.S. I Love You. Somersby. Imitation of Life. Straw Dawgs.

Lot of great true story and comedy sports movies! Mark Wahlberg did one, the origional Longest Yard was great, Major League and slapshot are two of the best comedies ever, and Brian's song and Something for Joey, will tear ur heart out! Classic sports movie! Him, favreau, Vince Vaughn, all came up at the same time! Vince is so skinny here!! Those three, him, Vince Vaughn, Jon favreau, did a lot of stuff together! U proly didn't even recognize Vince! He and Jon also did 4 Christmases, Made, and Swingers! I haven't even watched yet but I know u will give this, best movie ever! Vince was number 44!
