I have never heard Benedict speak before. He has a steady, pleasant voice. What I have read of him speaks of his deep intellectualism. I am not Catholic but I respect him.

On the day Pope Benedict XVI was elected in 2005, I was standing before a news monitor in New York’s Grand Central Terminal waiting for the Habemus Papam announcement. When Josef Kardinal Ratzinger stepped out, I was thrilled to know that my prayers were answered. However, behind me stood a German couple, with the woman complaining loudly and repeatedly, „SO eine Enttäuschung! SO eine Enttäuschung!(SUCH a disappointment!)“ As a retired German Teacher, I reeled around and loudly retorted: „Keine Enttäuschung für mich! Gott sei Dank!“ (No disappointment for me! Thank God!) I can’t remember if I added, „Schämen Sie Sich(Shame on you!)“ or not, but I am certain they heard it between the lines! May this giant of a Pope Rest In Peace. 😢

He is an intellectual giant. I love him and miss him so much 😔

I owe much of my catholic conversion to this great pastor. His clarity and firm decision to put God at the center of intellectual dialogue allowed me to persevere as a philosophy student and understand the primacy of God in the human discussion.

This very man whose work and teachings I have got to know for years and this very speech which I have come across today somehow sparked the love of god within me again after years of being a nonbeliever who thought that enlightenment could solely come from within oneself without the input of god and that god should not have a place in people's lifes because he was preventing people from believing in themselves and in their potential to grow as humans. Being raised a catholic,I even started marginalizing my parent's faith and in some sort critizing them for still believing in god, I truly hope god can forgive me for being a lousy bastard, long story short, thank you so very much pope emeritus for bringing the joy and love of god to my heart again and please dear brothers and sisters pray for me to grow in faith may god bless you all and the holy spirit bring joy to your lifes. Im sorry if this comment sounds negative. But I noticed that all the Pope in my lifetime are not preaching the gospel. Their sermons sounds monotonous. I am saying this not just because of wanting to criticize as I want all priest to be excellent preachers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their messages are very shallow and basic. I am a Christian too and I do really want to listen to Catholic priests preach the gospel about sin, repentance, in Christ alone, Judgement and hell, rewards in heaven, eternal life, healing, and salvation of souls. They all read their sermon, and not spontaneous.
