en.romereports.com Latin is the official language of the Vatican. Whenever the Pope has to announce something important, this is usually the language it's done in. So, on Monday morning when the time came to announce that John Paul II and John XXIII would be canonized on April 27th, 2014, Pope Francis made the announcement in Latin. .

Alice In Salt Land There are much more subtleties to Reconstructed Latin ("original" is not a correct definition) we can't even begin to discuss here. The speech was then marked by syllabic quantity and not as today. Ecclesiastical latin however is more understandable by today's sensibility and even Gregorian Chants rely on it to be correctly heard and sung. A change would be useless and undesireble.

Is this the same Latin spoken by the Romans? Would the Romans understand this?
@saintcelab3451
@saintcelab3451 7 жыл бұрын
No, Romans spoke classical Latin, and the Pope speaks ecclesiastical Latin (Medieval Latin). For example, in the movie "the passion of the Christ", they used the ecclesiastical pronunciation due to the number of Italian actors and directors (i suppose), which is historically inaccurate. Romans pronounced v's as u's, and c, g always as k, g (as in go). Ecclesiastical Latin is not that much different from the classical one grammatically speaking, though being more organized. (in classical latin you can place words wherever you want)
@lovecandy555
@lovecandy555 7 жыл бұрын
Actually Vs are pronounced like Ws in Latin. Also yes the Romans would probably understand parts of this. While Latin grew and developed over time, it didn't really change much from when it was first created until the point it was considered dead. Also Classical Latin does have structure, you can't put words anywhere. Latin is a language that uses noun declensions, they don't have words for a, the, and all other definite articles. That is for all Latin. Yes, more modern late Latin did use a semi different structure. Instead of placing verbs at the end if sentences they were mostly moved to follow the word, yet even in the Roman times not all people would put verbs at the end of sentences, it all depended. The Roman empire was around for a long time. Latin will no longer evolve, and like said back then really didn't evolve much. Our modern languages that come from Latin still d change daily. New words are added when needed. I mean in like 1900 computer would never be said by anyone, now today it is a common word for people to use. Not to mention the fact Ecclesiastical Latin is not the same thing Medieval Latin. Take the phrase Puellae Pecuniae, meaning a girl of money. Well it would be the same for all Latin forms. the ae means it would be genitive, in this context anyway, and genitive usually means of and the war for money is an adjective so it has to match the noun thus getting the proper sentence.
