Abandoned Urbex Canada

Күн бұрын

This island resort was once owned by the Roman Catholic Congregation of St. Basil. The island resort has been abandoned for 16 years. Some structures are in good shape and some have completely collapsed. The island was once Huronia/Huron Territory, and the Crown obtained title in 1856. The island was once a summer resort but closed in 1905.
Father William Roach leased the Island in the summer of 1922 for $300.00 Father William Roach was part of the Roman Catholic Congregation of St. Basil, known as The Basilian Fathers.
He had been a frequent visitor to the island as a young boy. It had left a lasting impression on him. So when he was looking for a private retreat he remembered the Island.
He thought the island would be perfect for the scholars to study without the distractions of the outside world. When they first purchased the island in 1922 there was a motel, dancing pavilion, 6 cottages, boathouse and a large farmhouse that was once owned by George Graham (the islands first full time resident. The holy fathers first challenge was to remove all the bats that lived in the abandoned hotel for years. Every year they continued to remove the bats and it took almost 60 years until aluminum siding was installed and the bat problem ended.
In 2002 Pope John Paul II came to visit the island for a few days. He enjoyed his time on the island.
After 85 years the number of people visiting the island resort declined. The Fathers decided to sell the beautiful Island in 2007.
The 25-acre Island was listed for 5.5 million dollars in 2016 and an 80 condo project was proposed. The developer withdrew the plan then re listed the island in 2020 for 3 million dollars.
The future of the island and buildings is unknown.

About me:
I have been exploring abandoned places since I was a child and now I would like to film the explores and share the videos with you.
My father took me to my first abandoned house when I was 7 years old. I remember going into the house and a old farmer came in and told us "we better watch out as the floors are all rotten and unsafe". Ever since that day I was hooked on exploring abandoned places.
If you have a location you would like to share with me or want me to explore for you please send me an email at abandonedurbexcanada@hotmail.com and I will give you full credit for the share in the description and during the video if you choose.

I have to play catch-up, I've been to Sicily. This video is immense!, shame about the rotting floors in the hotel as there's some good wood amongst all of that, I can almost smell that mould too...mask?. Just lookin out for ya, x. Those hotels looked like they would have been 'spidery' even back when they were being used...just made myself shudder there🤣.

The saddest for me is all the vandalism in the abandoned homes and buildings it just is so unfortunate. Still you researching these places is incredible I trust it possible you will come across some in time that are just as they were left. Thanks so much for your research and work 🇨🇦🙏💖

I think it has a metal roof. My parents had that on their home. They lived in a home in the woods and had a lot of snow in the winter. Looking at this place makes me incredibly sad. It is all so beautiful. The wood in these buildings, is beautiful too. I just hate to see this all falling down. Thank you so much for bringing us here. Blessings to you and always be safe.

Great Explore. The shrine for me was the Best Part of the island. The old fashioned locks on the outside of the doors in the hotel was creepy. Very Beautiful & Peaceful. The second hotel building was in pretty good shape. Hope none of horrific things like what happened at the Indian Schools in Canada happened on this island. Thank🌻You Brent for bringing us this unusual great explore. 👍🏻

Brent what an awesome find. The knoty pine wood is so beautiful in these buildings, well worth saving. The price of wood is outrageous like everything else. This would be cool to see in the summer time. The chapel, priceless ❤

Definitely enjoyed the video and the music during the view of the chapel and stone alter. In the UK there are many old places like this but a heritage foundation keeps up with maintenance and open them up to the public. Canada has so little old buildings you would think we would want to preserve them. Thank you for at least documenting whatever you find. Hope you have a great Easter weekend.

Oh . . . days of yesterdays past . . . I really enjoyed this one, Brent. The chapel is beautiful still, as well as the shrine. My father was an Episcopal Priest, and I remember some of the places that he had haunted in the past. This island, I am sure, was absolutely beautiful in its time. I really appreciate your channel, and I appreciate the fact that you do not leave the past behind. We really could learn a lot in this day and age about the things that people used to do, the places that they had lived, and the things that they used to cherish. Thank you for bringing fond memories back to me. And please be careful when you are exploring!

I agree many unused buildings could be repurposed for the homeless, even so there doesn't seem to be anyone really interested in making that a reality . This particular property is too secluded and transportation, weather, supplies all that would present huge difficulties. I could imagine a dedicated group having a kind of commune- farming, fishing, a return to nature sort of 1970s 'hippie' enclave...maybe?

We come across a cabin while sledding. Inside was a wood stove, broken chairs couches a table a broom and dust pan. We fired up the wood stove and burned all the garbage and broken furniture. It was great at 16 and 17 years old as we know had a place to have a beer and something to eat while riding.

I had no idea how big that island is. I wonder how they got those chapel beams on sight and when.

Wonderful tour. I was surprised that someone thought this was a good place to bring your children considering all the hazards LOL.

Great video. Enjoyed the uniqueness of the place. Itd be smart if new development kept the shrine intact!
