This story is a very American story, especially for anyone who has examined the history of religion in America. From Joseph Smith, later Brigham Young, and the LDS, to Mary Baker Eddy, and Christian Science, to Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, this country has been a font of new religious movements, each with their quirks and oddities. I suppose the reason for this is that the US has the First Amendment, with its establishment clause and especially its free exercise clause, which protects the rights of even the smallest of sects. The most successful, in terms of numbers at least, is the Mormons, which are becoming global, and growing at an incredible rate. Some are relatively benign, in part because of that Establishment Clause, and some are dangerous and destructive, as Jim Jones group was, or the Phelps Family, notorious for its extreme anti-LGBT hatred, which also based in Kansas. They were most notoriously known for their extremely offensive protests, especially at military funerals, and for bringing their young children to participate in such protests. I haven’t heard much from them lately, and their founder, Fred Phelps, has died. Perhaps that tiny movement has begun to die out. It leaves one wondering about this tiny movement of followers of their leader, now that he has, apparently quite suddenly, died. There’s a video on KZfaq of an interview that was posted in June of 2022 - just shy of two months ago as I write this, and he seemed to be in good health, and was talking of plans for expansion. I feel bad for his mother, if she is still living; it’s difficult for any mother to lose a son, however “confused” they might be. I certainly don’t think they ever intended any deliberate harm, and while I don’t agree with them, they are free to act in accordance with their conscience, and it doesn’t appear that they have compelled anyone into following them. David (Pope Michael’s given name) just doesn’t have the charismatic personality that cult leaders seem to have, and he certainly lived quite simply, not raking in money, and spending it on lavish expenses, like these Prosperity Gospel televangelists, or promising miracles of only one donates. I doubt Pope Francis even knows about this small movement, but given his pastoral instincts, I suspect he would find common ground in the simplicity and humility of Pope Michael. Simplicity and humility are two hallmarks of Francis own pastoral style, dating back to long before he was elected pope, when as Archbishop of Buenos Aries, he refused to live in the palace, instead living in a small flat, cooking his own meals, and using public transportation. But it will be interesting to see what happens to this group, now absent its leader.

***** I would be careful with saying that Vatican I was infiltrated. Granted there are some liturgical abuses but when the Novus Ordo mass is conducted with reverence it is beautiful.
