Can you imagine if Popeye stole Mario's thunder? Today's retro community would be raving about Popeye Kart, Popeye Paint, Popeye 64, etc. Instead of "Mario Maker" we'd have "Popeye Producer." There'd be no Donkey Kong Country... only Bluto's Boondocks. The world would be a scary, spinach-laden place.

Nintendo would never stuck with Popeye for as long as they have with Mario. Mario is Nintendo's own IP. Popeye is someone else's IP. Someone else who would have been able to take Popeye away from Nintendo and licence him to someone else, like Ocean, US Gold, Electronic Arts (back when it was Electronic Arts) Broderbund or Ubisoft.

I tried to get a license from King Features last year, but they were not so interested since Sony had the movie license already. My design was for a third person action game that would be awesome to play! It would feature all the favorite characters including the Jeep, Seahag and the Goon! Of course he would had to rescue Olive Oyl to complete the game.

Cool video! So many Popeye games out there. Someone in the 80s made a MSX game based on the second Game & Watch Popeye game, although I think it was unofficial. Then there is Popeye Screen Saver for Windows, released exclusively in Japan by HAL Corporation sometime in the 90s. Don't know more than that, sadly, but it's official and apparently has some gameplay elements to it.

I always believe that a Popeye crossover with Asterix would be amazing. Why? I don't know. That Popeye board game reminds me of that Flintstones game on the (Genesis?) that was kind of the same thing. Each player (Fred or Barney) would roll their dice, land on a square, and depending on the type of square you would get a little mini-game, platform level, or some sort of casino-like event. You also got a piece or something for every level you completed - kind of like Trivia Pursuit wedges.

Showing SMB but playing the music from SML really messed with my brain for a second there, I knew something was wrong but couldn't put my finger on it lol It was when the music passed the point where you'd normally get the first mushroom (resulting in that unique rising noise) followed by eating it (with its own unique growing noise) that I finally put it together... that was a distressing few seconds.

Also it had a scene from the old popeye movie it looked really good. It would of looked cool, like the game "Cuphead" for xbox. I think if they make that game in that style it would be a perfect fun fit for a game today or maybe a beatem up game like the simpsons arcade. I would get hyped.

Odd. You said Popeye 2 on the GB was Japan only but I own an English USA cartridge I bought second hand at a Kmart in the 90s. Still have it. Played it constantly on my super game boy

Popeye 2 for the gameboy is not a japanese exclusive though, I still have it in fact. It's a pretty fun game albeit on the easy side as long as you don't lose the spinach shooting ability.

I think Miyamoto not getting the licence to develop that first Popeye game all those years ago is a good thing. Nintendo would never have stuck with Popeye for as long they've done with Mario.

Great Popeye video! I REALLY enjoy it, like a nostalgia filled, retro show. One thing you didn't mention was the Sega Genesis cancelled Popeye game by Technos, there was only a handful of pictures on magazines, it actually looked pretty good graphically, the gameplay is a mistery though. Check it out www.unseen64.net/2010/06/06/popeye-genesis-mega-driv-cancelled/ Anyway, keep it up! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.

Ijiwaru majo seahag no maki (ee-gee-wah-roo mah-joe seahag no mah-kee) Sorry I had to fix the pronounciation. I've learned Japanese since I was a little kid, while I'm not fluent in it, I know the pronounciations of common japanese words when translated. So turn to me if you want me to pronounce some words for ya.

I have a Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Sea Hag no Maki cartridge, and the videos I posted of the first island were the first footage of this game posted to KZfaq. I personally like the game a lot, board game aspect and all. The only thing I don't like is that the board game theme plays all the time when you play 2 player mode. The one player version is terrific, the 2 player mode not so much, between the split screen and the repetitive music that just doesn't work anywhere outside the board screen. It's a real shame this game never made it outside Japan. It was supposed to, as I saw screenshots of this game in a 1993 issue of EGM, with Popeye using only his arm with a spinach meter similar to Popeye 2 for Game Boy. Something got changed at some point obviously, but the game seems to have been completed for the U.S. market, as the December 1994 issue of GamePro lists the game as "available now". I'm willing to bet, based on that, that there is a prototype somewhere out there. It's a shame Technos went belly up before the game could get released, especially since it seems to have been finished.
