I had no idea there were so many Popeye games. The fact they got the voice cast from the post movie serial TV series, to do the commercial for the home ports of the arcade game was a nice touch.

The Popeye shorts were always so wonderfully imaginative. I still remember that sequence where Popeye was fighting a gaggle of Goons. The battle became so pitched that eventually they tore the film reel upon which the fight was taking place! Popeye cartoons were full of fun things like that. We need a good Popeye game using all the advances of modern video game technology. Thank you for a fantastic stroll down memory lane.

You left out the most famous hand held lcd popeye game and watch by nintendo. That game was iconic.

I played lots of this as a kid on the C=64, though now it seems like that was one of the worst conversions. It's interesting to imagine how much different Nintendo would be now if they had been able to go with Popeye instead of Jumpman/Mario.

Ahh i like it played Popeye on famiclone console as kid. At same time watching popeye cartoon, i still remember that episode where olive oyl been kidnaped by some desert bandit and his small tent in desert was huge palace inside :)

Great memories of playing this game at the arcade when I was 8-years-old. It was also great on Colecovison, but not quite the same. I'd love to play it again!

I never knew there were so many Popeye games, or even that it was the original concept for Donkey Kong. I even was going to say about the sign at the end of the Santa Monica pier about the origins of Popeye but that seems to be in contention with a town in Missouri. Great video.

These videos are great. I remember as a kid me and my neighborhood buddies were smart and we all asked for different gaming systems. Thus we had the Atari 2600, intellivision, Commodore 64, apple II, colecovision, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, sega genesis, all of the Nintendo’s (it was a BIG neighborhood). And we still somehow found time to play outside.

Glad you included the TI99/4a version! The poor TI is often overlooked as it didn't have many great games, but the Popeye port was one of the best and really showed off what the machine was capable of.

As a kid in Cupertino, California in the early eighties, there was a single video game at a Rainbow Records called "Pop-Man", a Pac-Man rip off. Instead of Pac-Man you were a Popeye head going around munching power dots. I have never seen or heard of this odd video game since.

There's a British burger bar called Wimpy's that wanted to use Mr Wimpy as its mascot, but got sued and adopted a beefeater-almost.mr Wimpy: the character got his own game which was a mixture between Pac-Man and, - you guessed it - burger time. The game was called Mr.Wimpy :) He was always my #1 superhero, and I attest to the claim that spinach gives you superpowers.

Poor popeye has always been away from greatness, first he was so close to be in one of the most recognizable videogames of all time and then there was that gendy tarkakovsky movie. At least THAT is finally getting off the ground at long last.

I'm 42 years old now and I still remember the first time I played the Popeye arcade was way back in the early 80's when my mother took me to chuck e cheeses. I used to play that game a lot along with Burgertime and Moon Patrol whenever we went there. Time really flies by when you look back at things from your childhood.

Popeye goes into a building where there's strobing heart lights in the windows... There's only so much my adult mind can make of that lol.

A classic arcade game, and also enjoyed the C64 port as a kid...you can imagine my surprise while visiting a retro arcade at the Westfield Mall in Indiana back in 06, and finding they had a working Popeye game there!

I loved playing the NES version as a kid. I actually just bought a copy on eBay that's coming tomorrow, can't wait to play it again. I had a ColecoVision as a kid, but not the Popeye game, but I definitely wish I did, I would have played it constantly I'm sure.

That obscure spectrum popeye adventure game with the huge sprites also found its way to the commodore 64, by the looks of it, a direct port of that speccy version. But thats the one I played on my c64 as a kid...quite an interesting puzzle/ action/ adventure game I have to say...

The Atari 5200 version is one of the first 5 or 10 games I ever played. Cool to see it's pretty much the best option for playing it today outside of the actual arcade game or maybe the NES one.

The translation per Wikipedia of the SNES game was: "Popeye: the Tale of Sea hag the Wicked Witch." In that game, Roast Chicken could refill your life bar, and you got extra lives when you either got a Popeye doll or 100 coins. The catch? You instantly got credited with the life but lost the coins if you used coins for the life. If at the time, though, you were low on your life bar, you might not have the coins for a Roast Chicken from RoughHouse the Cook to refill your life bar if you hadn't found one in the level you were on (or still took lots of hits after you DID find one). Spinach gave you invulnerability for a finishing move once you hit a wandering boss a few times (often in the head) by either jumping on the head or hitting a weak spot with your anchor-and-chain (but didn't refill your life bar).

A lot of the arcade games you talk about have received a release on the Nintendo Switch. I would love to see Popeye added on there. I found the arcade once, never paid it again.

I loved that Popeye game on Gameboy because you could play with a friend with the link cable. The other player was Bluto and both players were running in the same level. It was a fun race to the end.

We never had an official port of the arcade game, but our Sailor Man on the Radio Shack Color Computer looks like it was very accurate, beyond limitations of sound and such for the machine, Wild.

There was also a Game Watch version of Popeye from the 70's. I had the Game Watch and the Famicom versions when I was a kid.

I love your videos! You were mistaken about Popeye 2 for the Game Boy, though, in that it did get a U.S. release. I just checked my cartridge to be sure, and it has the designation DMG-PG-USA on the label. The first Popeye Game Boy game is Japan exclusive, though.

I'll always consider it fascinating that the classic and familiar artstyle of early Nintendo is essentially the result of early efforts to mimic the look of Popeye art. 1:16 I believe the main reason Miyamoto wanted to make a Popeye game wasn't so much the property's popularity as it was Miyamoto's own personal fandom of Popeye. Popeye is one of those special cases where the character enjoyed an inexplicable level of popularity in Japan, similar to Tom & Jerry and Thunderbirds. 17:57 You're right about the Odyssey2 hardware. It was so much more limited than the Atari2600, you could be excused for considering it to be from a previous gen, and yet it was released a year after the 2600. Most of the compromises you see on-screen come from the fact that the platform had only 64 bytes of RAM, resulting in most of the graphics having to be drawn from built-in ROM which includes the robot-like sprite standing in for Popeye, the ball shape for the spinach, and the "divide" symbols hovering on the sides. 21:33 Part of the reason why the sprites look off is that this footage of the C64 port is coming from an emulator using a post-process to smooth out edges, so it isn't really representative of true C64 graphics.

Nintendo also made 3 Game & Watch versions of Popeye. One was the "traditional" LCD Game & Watch version, one was a tabletop colour game, and one was a "panorama" colour version.

Popeye Game And Watch: Am I a joke to you?

You mentioned DC's take on Popeye as Captain Strong. So here's some interesting history about that as well, when Max Fleischer did Popeye, they also did the original Superman shorts. Ironically, they did a short where Popeye meets Superman (sort of). In it, Popeye, Olive and Bluto (pre-Brutus era) are either reading about Superman, or they've just finished watching a Superman short, but whatever the case, Olive and Popeye admire Superman. Bluto comes up with a scheme where he disguises himself as the Man of Steel, and relentlessly picks on Popeye, knowing the sailor won't dare hit 'Superman,' but when Bluto's ruse is found out, Popeye downs some Spinach, thanks to the Man of Steel and defeats Bluto. Now the reason behind the ripoff was in 1970, DC thought King Features would not mind lending out the character since both had been done by Fleischer Studios, as well as the promise of DC to revive Popeye in a DC Kids line, which never really successfully launched, so they ended up losing the license. I suspect DC came up with Captain Strong since the attempted crossover of our favorite sailor had been leaked out (remember this was DAYS before the Internet) and the comics company had to come up with something where not to disappoint the readers. Thus they took the Harvey Comics route of simply 'rebranding' the character. Later they would do this with Asterix the Gaul, when Superman ends up in the Past...

If Nintendo hadn't got the Popeye license, this would be another official Donkey Kong / Mario game.

When I look at Popeye's kick animation during WrestleCrazy, I think about the Russian Cossack Dance, like the one Zangief et al do during his Street Fighter 2 postgame.

That 2600 conversion was a stunner.
