Jasmine Guy talks about A Different World 1 of 8

My guest today is Jasmine Guy, a talented actress whose first TV appearance was as a dancer on the television version of FAME.
She also has starred in series such as showtime’s Dead Like Me and KC Undercover. But she’s best known for her time as Whitley Gilbert on the hit sitcom and Cosby Show spin-off, A DIFFERENT WORLD.
I loved talking with Jasmine. She’s funny and irreverent and bright and just fun to talk to. This conversation took place around ten years ago, before the Bill Cosby scandals came to light, when the comedian was still revered as America’s Dad, and beloved by all.
In this first of eight parts, we chatted about how she created whitley on a different world. Jasmine talks about her childhood, but we began chatting about how she got involved with the series. .

"A Different World" is my all-time FAVORITE sitcom!! I loved it so much because I could relate to it as an alumnus of Tuskegee University (an HBCU)...it depicted Black College Life as it REALLY WAS!! I was a junior in college when it initially aired, so I really bonded with the show and the characters. I was so close to this show that I named my daughter's middle name "Jaleesa" (I spelled it differently)...I also had a roommate named Kimberly who looked EXACTLY like Kim Reese and she was my ROAD DOG!! I actually KNEW people that were EXACTLY like EACH of the characters and I mean to the TEE!! Thanks for this video series, I learned a lot of interesting facts that I didn't know! This show (after Season 1) was the BEST and I have most of the episides on DVR!! LOVE YOU, "A Different World," Debbie Allen ROCKS!!❤❤❤

Favorite episode is when Whitley was getting married and Dwayne's begs for her. "Baby Please !!!"

@@freein2339 Awww you must’ve never had love in your life and you are butt hurt about it. Anyone that says that episode is stupid don’t believe in love and never experienced it. Unless you were one of those who got dumped for somebody else.

Jasmine you were just so hilarious on "A Different World" as the character Whitley you did us the veiwerers proud it gave us something to look forward to weekly and to watch so that we could pull from all of your little witty sayings. Keep blessing us through your Acting Skills or whatever line of work that you are now involved in because someone is watching you and taking it in for the good from what they see from the message that you may say without even voicing a word. My sister your furture is looking brighter praise God!!!!! God bless you from your sister in Christ in Hammond, LA.

Not only was that Ms. Pinkerd accent difficult to keep up, her natural voice is a bit lower, kudos to Jasmine Guy.

I absolutely still love Jasmine Guy. From FAME to School Daze to our favorite, Whitley Gilbert in A Different World, she is a Wonder Woman, but can we PLEASE explain how much this woman and Prince Rogers Nelson are doppelgangers!!! They look JUST ALIKE!

In the first season of a Different World, Whitley said she had a sister. In later seasons, she was an only child.

I always thought that Whitley was mixed race. Her mother was black and her father was white. I could relate to Whitley because my mom was black. She grew up in Bridgeport Conn. My dad is white and he grew up in Manhattan Central Park west. My parents met at Columbia University and I grew up in Holmdel, N.J. although my personality is more like that of Denise.

Jasmine is mixed race but Whitley had two black parents played by Diahann Carroll and Ron O'Neal.
