What problems did you have? I'm asking because my 135 hp two stroke gets too hot above 3000 rpm

Get the OEM, the kit from Amazon is cheap, gasket is bit thick, plus diaphragm doesn't site well. I redid many times, till I ordered the OEM

Are you using OEM parts kit or after market?

Thermostats have to get to a certain temp to open up. I think its 140 for Mercury. Check them first, they are easy to swap than puppet.

Yes, mine was getting hot around 1500 to 2000 rpm

​@@FKCamVlogs I've just found out that when engine first start thermostats are closed and poppet valve is closed also, but thermostats open very quickly while poppet valve remains closed. Thermostats rarely fail opening. Once the engine is warm we can increase engine speed above 1500 rpm when the poppet valve should start opening, when higher water pressure, due to the rpm going twice as fast as idling, pushes the diaphragm against the valve spring. This allows hot water exiting increasing water flow high enough to cool the engine. At idling rpm poppet valve should stay closed which allows the low water pressure reach the exhaust manifold, the cylinders and heads of the engine until thermostats get opened at around 63°C equal to 140°F. Temperature alarm sounds when needle reads 3/4, engine reaches 115°C equal to 240°F, and stops sounding when temperature drops to 99 equal to 1o 210F. I think that I ended understanding what happens. Thermostats regulate temperature at very low rpm and poppet valve regulates temperature at medium ang high rpm. A closed poppet valve above 1500 rpm causes the engine to get too hot, because hit water can't exit. This is the most common problem when valve gets stuck with salt deposits, or diaphragm gets broken. . . An opened poppet valve below 1500 rpm, a rare case when spring gets broken, causes the engine to get too hot at idling rpm, because water pressure is not high enough. Poppet valve takes care of cooling above 1500 rpm by moving the valve until it gets completely opened. If valve doesn't open the engine will get too hot because hot water can't exit which reduces water flow. Below 1500 rpm poppet valve should move until the spring closes the valve allowing low pressure water to reach the whole engine.

​@FKCamVlogs I went yesterday on board and checked that at 2000 rpm the temperature needle reads 1/2 and telltale sends plenty of water out but also shows a bit of white water vapor steam Temperature goes down to 1/4 after a while at 1000 rpm. Idle is set to 600 rpm when engine is cold and 700 rpm after working for several minutes.

@FKCamVlogs Nice. I have two 2001 Mercury Optimax 150s. They're overheating and I am looking for solutions. I've already changed out the impellers and thermostats.

Did you used OEM thermostats? Did the wings of impellers are in same directions as the old ones? If yes to both then next thing on list is poppet valve, make sure to buy OEM as well

@FKCamVlogs I found what the problem was. I had sent one of my ECUs to get repaired and didn't flush out the outboards. I left them for a week and a half. The salt crystallized and wasn't allowing the thermostats to open up completely which caused my port side outboard to overheat. I took out the thermostat housings and had to scrape off all the crystallized salt on both outboards. I also used a file and sandpaper to clean them all up. I took out my boat earlier today in the San Diego Bay and both outboards are good. And oh, I used the Quicksilver thermostats so yes, they are the OEM ones. Thanks for following up on my question. It is greatly appreciated. Now I will be going offshore fishing to hunt for yellowfin tunas, bluefin tunas, dorados and yellowtails down in Mexican waters.
