For over 20 years, Spongebob has dominated the entire landscape of not just Kids Entertainment and media, but culture all over the world. From the hit TV Show, 3 Movies, Merchandise, a plethora of collaborations, and tie-ins. Spongebob has been popular for so long and it doesn't seem like he's going to stop anytime soon. Why is this, why has Spongebob transcended being a simple kids' show into a cultural phenomenon? In this video today, we take a look at Spongebob's past, what makes the character what he is, and why it stuck. This is the Cultural Importance of Spongebob Squarepants!

I remember on my USB storage device for my 360, there was a media player/video app thingy, and I remember on it there was Seasons 1 - 8 of Spongebob and every night I would just watch some Spongebob episodes, but my favorite episode and even to this day it was always the Christmas Season 2 special, don't know why I just think it's perfect.

Growing up on the coast of Maine, I loved how accurate some of the designs of the show were, like the Krusty Krab being a lobster trap etc. And apparently Hillenburg spent summers here working at a restaurant (I wish I knew which one)

SpongeBob means so much to me I can't even really articulate it in words. This yellow sponge encompassed at least a quarter of my childhood. The show, movies, games, merchandise, all of it. It's one of those things as a child that brought me just sheer 100% happiness when being a kid at school was rough. Hillenburg built my passion for animation and it what led me to a career in animation. I want to make something that makes some other kid feel how SpongeBob made me feel. It made me want to tell good stories, spread good vibes and pass on the torch in a sense. Whether or not I do is up to fate, but if it weren't for the little square dude I'd be someone completely different. SpongeBob changed my life. And You capture that so well with this video. He changed all of us and taught us to live happy.

This video just ascended to the Pantheon of the all time best yt content. Spongebob is my favorite piece of media. Since the age of 3 this yellow sponge has been an integral part of my life. Spongebob is the only piece of entertainment where it feels like I'm watching my best friends having fun. This feeling has been a conundrum for me, but now thanks to you. I'm starting to see that I'm not the only one who shares that sentiment. Keep on going. Your the goat man.

I can still remember watching the premier of the first episode. Even though that makes me feel super old, I'm also happy I got to watch so many og episodes back when they premiered. My tiny mind lost its shit during episodes like the pizza delivery and band episodes. A true legendary cartoon lol

So apparently I just discovered this a few days ago, but there are apparently a series of comic books and graphic novels made and produced by Stephen Hillenberg that are not nickelodeon labeled. From what I was able to tell, Hillenberg owned Spongebob, but Nickelodeon allowed only certain creative freedom when making episodes for the TV show. Lemme tell you that the comics, though they still are Spongebob and in its core its the same franchise, are shockingly different due to how creative Hillenberg, the writers, and the artists go with the comics. Like, they do social commentary on a lot of political, cultural, and environmental issues. Stuff that, if it were made into animated episodes, the show would be viewed completely different to what it is. And its AMAZING!!! And I love it!! And I can't believe no one is talking about them because they're so good!! They deserve the attention!! And I'm so mad I can't own any physical copies

SpongeBob has changed my life and my childhood he’s so lovable funny and just is always trying to be happy and that’s what we should be still being a kid SpongeBob has been amazing for the 10 years of my life he’s so inspirational and now he’s not as great as he used to I still love this little fella and I liked sponge on the run and it’s sad Stephen is gone but look what he brought us to always be happy nice funny and never take life serious p.s. we love you Stephen and thank you for making my childhood better and will still

Do you know that scene where Squidward gets his freaking toenail peeled off yeah that happened to me so when I see that well I can’t even look at it but the first time I ever saw it I looked at it all the way through and I owe God I had horrible flashbacks they peeled off my entire toenail I was standing in front of a door and I had this weird metal plate thing on the bottom I don’t know what for and when they open it it just peeled off my entire big toenail.

Yeah the first 3 seasons are the best but are you sure seasons like season 6 season 8 or season 9 are not nearly as good as the first 3 seasons of the show?

I think I stopped watching Spongebob "religiously" in about 2009-2010, around the 10th anniversary. I watched a special or two here and there, but I kind of stopped catching up with the newer episodes, so I have no idea what is going on in the new seasons. I know that there are spinoff shows like the Patrick Show and Camp Koral but I don't have much interest in them. The only other thing I saw of Spongebob recently that I liked was the second Spongebob movie, which I saw with my mom when it came out in 2015.

I'm more than tired of people still writing the same crap. You're probably going to tell me to ignore this comment, but the problem is that I've been patient for years, genius. The solution would be to have less gender commentary. But that's too much to ask for someone like you. (Sorry, I'm just countering the arguments that many people gave me.)
