People are so weird about the ways that others choose to create art. I used to be so stressed about wasting paint or paper that I would barely make any art. I wasted about 15 years of my life trying to make art the conventional way and dreading every moment of it. I like a very clean palette. I use a smaller porcelain palette to mix anything, and will wash if after each painting, and sometimes several times during the painting process. I have a BUNCH of convenience mixes (and A LOT of colors in my palette) and will never feel bad about not wanting to spend 75% of the painting process fussing around with getting the color I want. If you understand color composition and color theory then you will literally not have any issues with WHICHEVER way you choose to create art. Gatekeepers need to calm down and focus more on creating instead of speaking. :)

Jeez, anybody with a STRONGLY HELD OPINION about how another artist cleans/doesn't clean/wastes paint on/skimps paint on/mixes/doesn't mix the stuff on their palette, seriously needs to head back into their own studio space and stop wasting valuable painting time!

Hah. Husband asked me where the spoons where. To visualise my current level of energy and pain I cleanedout the cutlery drawer of any spoons. Husband got the hint ( almost 20 years of marriage will do that ) and asked if I needed any help :P Brilliant theory that is.

@creativitybytrisha6819
@creativitybytrisha6819 Жыл бұрын
@@tianna1116 it is. Typically a good way to explain to someone who doesn't have mental or physical health issues is to use "spoons" as a degree to show how much mental or physical fortitude you have throughout a day. For example - yesterday I had to take my kids shopping for school supplies and gifts for someone. I HAD started the day with a ton of spoons and felt like I was going to accomplish so much. Then the kids started running around a store knowing mom doesn't allow that. That interaction drained me to only essentials for the rest of the day. Then this morning I didn't get much sleep and my kids have been fighting so I was in bare minimum mode. My husband very kindly took the ornriest child to the store to get some supplies I have been wanting for a long time and I felt like I had infinite spoons after that.

I'm so glad it was well received. I carry a lot of guilt about a lot of things (nearly all of which I shouldn't feel guilty about). I'm beginning to work on that, starting with tiny amounts of paint on my palette 💜
@FaerieDust
@FaerieDust 2 жыл бұрын
I try to remember just how miniscule the amount of wasted paint actually is - it's comparable to the paint I "waste" when I rinse off my brush during painting, you know?
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 2 жыл бұрын
@@FaerieDust Exactly! And compared to other paint mediums too. One of the reasons I gravitate to watercolor so much is that it's inherently more eco-friendly than using acrylics and oils. I've been working on filling my sediment cup for nearly two years and have barely made a dent.
@katalinelo8011
@katalinelo8011 2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention wasting paper while using up whatever is left on the palette. If abstract isn't the your way to work, that will be pretty much useless anyways. I usually try to mix just the amount I need, mostly I paint more pictures in one session to reduce waste as much as possible. But I don't really care if I clean my palette, I don't have the space to store miniscule amounts of paint just to avoid wasting. My only exception is if I achieved an unusual colour I might not be able to reproduce, but that is not very often the case. I always start with clean palette, so if I run out of clean compartments, I need to wipe out what I don't need anymore.

So it hasn't been much fun..or easy..to hold tablet and watch someone dancing with their paintbrush. Never feel guilty about cleaning pallets if it gives you joy. It is funny that there is such a learning curve for something we feel is so simple..the pallet. I wish I had known before you filled the wells the first time..mistakes we all have made unless someone was there to guide us....I hope I get 5o stay around and watch this new set up give you joy and spark instiration.

Also, if you tried using it all up on projects you didn't want to paint anyway, that would just be an additional waste of paper, time, and energy. Sometimes the best option is to just get rid of the thing, even if you coukd theoretically maybe have had a future use of it. I'm glad that you're doing better! You might be surprised at some nasty comments KZfaqrs get from people who want to discourage others. While I recorded that segment partially for myself, it was also for others who may be struggling with similar negativity in their life. I have really been working on my attachment to "things" and decluttering even though "I may need that some day." I thought it could be helpful for others to hear as well if they are stuck in a similar headspace. I hope that makes sense :)

The cleanup is why I’ve not gravitated to fixed well palettes. Usually use removable pans. However those are typically limited to metal or plastic palettes. I’ve recently purchased a large square dinner plate where I’ll be experimenting with squeezing out small amounts of paint per painting ala Anna Mason. We’ll see how that goes. I worry I’ll accidentally squeeze out too much. Anyway thanks for posting this. I have a couple palettes I’ve been procrastinating on cleaning and this has lit a fire under me. PS my all time favorite color is Roman Szmal’s Shadow Violet. It is soooooo gorgeous. I wish it was readily available in the U.S.

I need to curate a palette of much used colors. I'm a botanical artist and my faves are: olive and sap green, lemon yellow, new gamboge, quin pink, quin magenta, quin purple, ultramarine, cobalt blue, cerulean, quin red, alizarin crimson and permanent rose, of course the standard neutrals as well.

Cleaning a palette is so satisfying, although once I decided where I wanted which paints, that hasn't happened. I did move paint around in my big plastic palettes a few times, though. When I first started out in 1995, I had been collecting gear for years but was so apprehensive about doing it wrong. Turns out, there is no wrong! LOL! Shortly before my first class started, I was trying to figure out how much paint to put in my palette wells and finally found someone who said between a chocolate chip and a Hershey's kiss was a good start. I loved that and have stuck to it! I have collected gray water and dried it - have a couple of half pans of it. I do prefer purer colors, though. I have a 5 gallon paint bucket outside for adding water where the paint has settled out of it. It can dry out outside and I can dispose of that. I knew of something you could add to gray water to solidify it but I cannot remember what that was. Things disappeared during the past few years. Enjoy your palette!

So glad that the chronic pain and anxiety came into the conversation. There are days getting up are a struggle for me so the way I choose to do things are therefore my decision. What a wonderful treat to watch your new video! It was so relaxing for me to watch and listen to the calming music, and it helped smooth out my crappy week so that my weekend starts off on the right foot. 😀 (I couldn't help but chuckle watching you try to manipulate the M.Graham paints; they are a sticky bunch! Despite this, I do love them for their color payout and ease of "rewetting", not that they ever dry...) And as far as feeling guilty about what other people think ("wasting" paint and what not), I'm glad you're trying to not let it bother you. It's not easy to get to that point, but once you do, you will feel so free! Maybe it's my increasing age (I'm in my early 50's), but I used to feel just as you do. When I knew I was doing things that other people disapproved of, it would make me feel terribly guilty and would affect my behavior. But over the past several years, I have gotten to the point where I only worry about what I and my family think. Others can think and believe what they want, and good for them, but once they try to tell me how to think or what to do, it's like a switch turns off in my head and their opinions no longer matter to me. Very freeing, even though it took some time to get there. Bright blessings on your new journey to a new part of the country, a new space, and a fresh palette! It seems as if it's just what you needed. 🙂

This goes along with the ways that we choose to conserve “stuff.” I love what the crafting guru Tim Holtz says very often. “You do you and I’ll do me.” He must have come to this after always being assailed with comments about “how things should be done.” I’m glad that you’re back and feeling healthier. 😊👍I’m familiar with all of those emotional and mental health issues you mentioned and know that we must always be vigilant to keep our WHOLE health at the top of a life priorities list.

A very relaxing and satisfying video :) The tape strip labels are a great idea I think I might have to use on my own palette.

Hello Denise, I just want to thank you for your videos which are very pleasant to watch and rich. You are very generous in your sharing. I'm sad to ear that some people's comments affect you so much. Luckily there are people like you. I am currently hospitalized and watching your videos does me a lot of good and de-stresses me. When I’m looking at all the plastic packagings used in the hospital, I can’t stop thinking that many of them could probably be avoided if we bothered to question the system a bit. I think the "waste" you refer to in your video is very minimal compared to this although I agree that everyone should be responsible of how they consume. In summary, the balance of your contribution to society is very largely positive, thank you again and please don't listen to each other's criticisms. We can't do anything otherwise 🙂

Hello Denise, just want to thank you for your video. It really helped me pick some new professional colors since I only have used student grade ones. I do like to paint animals in particularly mammals so, for me, you are a reference 🦊

Hullo Denise, I do enjoy watching and listening to your videos! You certainly have a relaxing way about you and I feel like I am always learning from you and your videos. I used to have a 42 well porcelain palette, it was very old and very heavy! I know how you feel about leaving favorites off of your working palettes! I wish I could say that I donated it to a worthy cause/person, but alas I dropped it and broke it into so many pieces! Of course I just swept the entire mess into the trash and did not even try to save my paints!! I was very discouraged. I recently purchased a plastic 42 well palette from Jerry’s Artarama the brand is Creative Mark. I must say that it works fine but it is nothing like my old one, yes the shape is similar, but mixing on it is NOT the same. I went to butcher trays when I gave up on digital artworks and moved back to traditional painting. I have started using porcelain platters from the thrift store, some even have groves on the rims for placing paint! They are lighter and if I drop one it only cost $1 or $2 ! Thank you for sharing your fresh start with us and I know that we are all looking forward to seeing you create more artworks here, on Patreon and your Skillshare classes! Until the next time, be well, stay safe and enjoy your new surroundings!

It is so nice to see you here again! I appreciate to hear the reasons behind your choices. And wow, that palette is massive! I am used to working out of full pans, which I move around in different palettes as I need them. I don't know if I could commit to a "permanent" position in a porcelain palette. I do have several porcelain mixing surfaces, so it is a good mix for me. I love your new colour choices!

This video brought me all kinds of calm serene feels. Thank you! I really needed that. I love cleaning my pallet, my mixing tray can get so muddy. Even if it's not, I still love cleaning it and restoring that perfect white. And I have to say those are the most beautiful swatches on KZfaq. Your perfect rectangles and dabbing technic just made my heart soar. Love everything about this video!

I am so impressed by how clean your hands remained! I put paint in one half pan and instantly my hands are a mess along with dots and lines of pain mysteriously showing up on furniture, clothing, and the occasional cat. You did a good job there, very impressive and calming to watch.

Wow! Our palettes are so close , that’s amazing! I mix my purples and only 3 colors were different. A couple of years ago I bought the Steven Quiller palette and enjoy it very much. I use the quin coral and pyrol scarlet because I enjoy florals also. I use my PB16 all the time especially in greens. The other one that was different was the piemonite, I tried it but there wasn’t enough room. Glad that you are enjoying your new palette! Also thank you for letting me see a clean palette:)

I hate that you have to explain yourself to people for doing what you want with your own palette lmao but I do appreciate the permission you've "given" that it's okay to start fresh and clean. Sometimes you need that. I struggle with anxiety and depression myself and have had serious art block and I'm wondering if doing this might help me as well. Love your videos Denise, always a gift when a new one goes up! Thank you!

Great video! this was really satisfying to watch and the end result is pure palette goals 👌🏻I completely get what you mean about wasting paint, though I do think watercolour is pretty much the least wasteful medium. I don’t like re-using my mixing well because often there’s bits of dust on it and I wouldn’t like that on my paintings, but I feel so guilty cleaning the paint off so often

I love this Denise, it was so relaxing watching you bring order and calm to your watercolour palette. Sometimes I can feel bad about how much paper and paint I waste. I am a very free painter and in some ways I loved it when I first started and I would use good but not a 100 percent cotton paper and white night paints. I hate having to be careful about how expensive it all is. You have inspired me to clean my palette. I had been wondering about getting a big ceramic studio palette, Meeden has a cheap version of the Stephen Quinn one (I think thats what its called) but I work from a small space and not sure if it would be a god fit for me. Hope you are feeling better. Happy watercoloring.

I had to watch the update of your palette, as four years ago I purchased this very palette and followed many of your "Color Spotlight" and "Top 5" videos in addition to YTers Steve Mitchell, Angela Fehr and Dr. Oto Kano to help me narrow down my choices to the 30 wells. I am so grateful for the incredibly informative and enjoyable videos you provide on your channel. I know you have had a most difficult year, both physically and mentally (not to mention your move) and truly wish you a much better year ahead. Thank you lastly for being a safe place for anyone who is a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. May minds open as education continues about being other than a hetero male.

For a bit of a "best of both worlds" I will add a few drops of water to any stuck paint, let it soak in, then use a brush to liquify it and transfer it to a half pan. Anything I can't easily transfer wouldn't be enough to paint with. Let me clean up without worrying about waste.
