It is SOOOOO much easier and a lot less messy to use toothpicks to stir/smooth out the paint in the wells of the palette. I use one toothpick for 2 colors, one end for each color, and just toss it in the trash. There is also very minimal waste because of the tiny amount that sticks to the toothpick.

Great video! I love the examples of why you added certain colors...pumpkin oranges, etc. One thing that has saved me a TON of money, and I wished I'd known sooner, was to learn about pigment numbers. If your 3 purples are PV23 then you know they are the same. If 2 yellows say PY97, then they are going to be similar. So many brands have so many different names, that it makes keeping track of what you have impossible. Yay for them, Boo for us! 🤣 I like that you aren't brand loyal. So many people are, yet certain companies do certain colors so much better. (I could talk about that subject all day!) It was great that you explained about smoothing the paints, that was another thing I wish I'd learned sooner. Like you, I'd seen others do it, but never understood why. One way to fix your wells or pans that aren't smoothed is to add more paint on top and use the palette knife or whatever to smooth that over. Sorry for the long comment, thanks for this fabulous video! 🌻

I was very late to the party on understanding about the color numbers! You explained it very well. It took me comparing different brand charts over and over to finally make the connection. 😏 I felt pretty silly because I deal with hex codes, Pantone codes, etc all the time in my digital work, but somehow it never occurred to me to check the paint tube for the color number before buying. A true duh moment. 🙄 No need to apologize for long comments. I enjoy the conversations.

Hi - new subscriber here 🙂 I'm just 4 minutes in, but want to offer you an easy solution to divide your large mixing area in your new pallete into smaller areas! Just run a nice bead of glue ftom a hot glue gun to make dividers. It works beautifully! I even made more paint wells in a pallette like your old one that way! I hope it will work with tin just as well - worth a try 🤞 Best of luck! 💗

Hi I just want to offer a second alternative for dividing your palette. I used the hot glue for a while and it helped but in some places it started to seep under. I discovered this trick, which is neater and for me, easier. Get the narrowest width of plumber’s tape. It’s made of rubber and it is made to seal and keep water out…..You just peel off the paper and stick it down-super easy and effective. It’s neater and more effective than glue. I just realized that I can cut in half to make it even more thin. Hope this helps someone.

20 years ago, I purchased a Holbein 30 well palette. Today, I use 8 colors. I am able to mix anything. This is just too much. Also, WN Opera is a very fugitive color that will disappoint.

I think maybe the circles could be used to keep water cups stable? If you have water cups that fit in them lol
@bealaart
@bealaart 5 ай бұрын
They call them mixing wells in their product description, but I think a bathroom cup would fit, so you could use it that way if you'd like. Good thought. I wasn't a fan of them at first, but now, I am happy to have more divided areas to mix in.

Hi, Alex! Thanks for the suggestion. I have several mixing recipes from this palette sprinkled throughout other videos you may want to check out. The most recent is the pumpkin green in How To Paint A Pumpkin Filled With Flowers; but, I will put that on my list and perhaps do a whole video on mixes. Thanks so much for subscribing, commenting, & watching! Happy painting! :)

Apparently this palette is extendable with an insert for an additional 18 colours that is sold separately
@bealaart

I saw that after I added more mixing wells with hot glue. The insert won't fit now with the hot glue, so when my hot glue needs replacing I plan to give the insert a try. If you try the insert let me know how you like it. I'm curious to know. 😀

I have found that when I use a pallette knife to smooth the paint I can usually get almost all of the paint off by scraping it on the edge of the well. Sometimes I even rub it across the mixing area of the palette so whatever comes off will at least be usable. I am really loving these colors!! Thanks for watching & commenting! 😀

Hi, I love your palette so much that I just ordered one, with the inset for additional 18 colors. I’m forever in search of the best palette. I’m wondering whether you have any insight about it that would help now that you’ve used it for a while. I’m hoping the insert isn’t too much trouble to access, especially since the main palette is so large. Mine will be here today and I’m trying to figure out how to organize it.
@bealaart
@bealaart 9 ай бұрын
That's exciting! I spent 4 or 5 days debating which colors to put in mine. I hated leaving any of them out! 😂 When I ordered mine I didn't see an insert for it! I just went to Amazon and found it and ordered one, too! Thanks for mentioning it!! I guess you can still use the mixing wells in the main palette and just wait for them to dry before putting the insert back in? Otherwise, that's a lot of colors to share the smaller insert wells. Regardless, well worth a try! I love, love, love this palette!! It's so nice being able to have so many colors in my palette at once. Now that we've solved the divider issue, the only other thing (like most palettes) is you'll need to prime it first. Since it is plastic, if you don't prime it, the paint will bead up on it, until it gets broken in. It's not a big deal if it beads up, I just don't particularly care for it. I used toothpaste to prime mine which worked like a charm, but as I'm sure you know, there are a number of ways to prime. I am glad I put my neutrals over in that side area. They work well for me there. The circle wells are interesting. They do a good job keeping color isolated, but it makes for some awkward space between them and the paint wells. But that's minor. I really can't think of anything else. Best palette I've ever had! Happy palette building!!😍
@deborahrodney6562
@deborahrodney6562 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for the advice. I was wondering whether it needed priming. I’m hypnotized by the way your mixing areas look! So smooth with all of the colors softly blended. I was thinking maybe I’ll go without dividers, it seems to be working well for you and your palette looks like a piece of art itself. I will definitely put those neutrals on the side, its the perfect set-up. I’m pretty sure my greens are going to end up on the insert and that’s bothering me a bit. Or possibly even divided between the main palette and insert. There are worse problems I guess. I can’t wait to get them. Happy painting! I love your tutorials.

@@deborahrodney6562 Thanks so much. I have loads of greens and if I were setting all this up at once I, too, would consider putting greens on the insert! I don't want to re-do my pallette at this point though because it is working really well for me. I'm not sure what I am going to put there. It'll be fun figuring it out!
