PSA to anyone: If your stolen packages were delivered by USPS, report the porch pirate to the USPS Inspection Service. Chances are very likely the porch pirate is also stealing packages from a bunch of other houses, and the usps inspection service doesn't take that shit lying down.

I had a pc stolen off my porch and the company refused a refund or replacement until the police found who stole it. As someone who has worked her ass off to escape poverty its really disheartening that selfish people steal from those just trying to get by.

A weird side effect of this is when you see the good nature of delivery drivers as a result of porch pirates. I ordered a birthday gift for my own sister who's birthday is in June. I come home one day and my mother asks why the snow shovel was on the front step in the middle of summer. The driver had gone around the house looking for something to hide the package behind so you couldn't see it from the street. A weird bit of camouflage, but still a kind gesture.

One time porch pirates stole a textbook I ordered in college. It wasn't even a pricey one; it was one my professor had written herself for her own research methods course and I could ONLY purchase it online through this specific seller. To this day I hope they were disappointed when they opened that box to find a paperback science textbook worth only like $20.

I live in a small town and people will legitimately just post the image of the porch pirate on facebook in our community page asking if anyone knows them. 9 times out of 10 someone will step forward and name the person and that info will be taken to authorities, which usually ends up in an arrest.

Thankfully this can no longer happen to be because our mail gets put in a locked box we have a key to but this still makes me so mad that they get away with it.

Former amazon driver. I recommend buying a locked chest/cabinet thing for your front porch. You can put the combination in the delivery notes and request that they put the package inside. Some people also will request that the packages are placed in something like a grill outside

In The Netherlands, packages *only* get delivered to your door if you are home. If you are not home, it will either be dropped of at your neighbours house (with an email telling you which adress has your package) OR it will be sent to a depot (a store nearby) where you can retreive it safely. On top of this, valuable packages require a signature from the person receiving the package.

I'm not sure if this is even a thing in the US, but when you order packages here in Sweden, 99% of the time you have the option of having them delivered to the your closest convenience store instead of to your door. It's usually even the default option. You then just get a message with a code, you go to the store and tell them you're there to collect the package with code so-and-so, and boom, you got your package without any chance of porch piracy.

It's actually wild you can have video evidence of a crime and the authorities can't do anything about it??? Like what the hell is the ring doorbell even for then. I understand wanting to censor the woman's face to protect others from being falsely accused, but surely it could be released uncensored to police and if they can track people down by surveillance cameras on corpo property or with physical descriptions they can absolutely track this woman down. They'd do the same for someone who robbed a store or broke into your house??

As a Dutch person, the fact that you guys even get packages like that (just dropped on your porch or wherever) blows my mind. Absolutely blows my mind. In my country there is no such thing. They either ring the doorbell and give it to you directly OR they take it to the nearest store where you can pick it up yourself. If you posted up her face (even if just in you local area) surely someone would know her. I’ve seen cases where people rat out someone they know very personally. Even if she has already tossed the items, it’ll at least possibly deter her from doing it again and save someone else the heartache.

Charlie, just tell your carriers that you don't want them delivered to your house. They will keep it on them until you can pick your packages. I did that for few items and its great.

I had photo evidence of my neighbor stealing my package, and when I confronted said neighbors with the photo evidence, they straight up denied it. She was wearing the same exact outfit, face was easily noticable, and still denied it completely. The confidence in her voice was more infuriating than the actual theft itself. Hope she enjoyed a pair Men's jeans twice her waist size and a $5 outlet adapter so I can charge my phone in the UK.

That is absolutely devastating for Matt, All stealing is wrong, but most things can be REPLACED, the fact Matt spend 6 months to make his sisters birthday special is gone forever and has no value to her... heartbreaking.

In the Netherlands if we're not home the delivery driver posts a little letter through your door saying "I left your package at **house address**" so you go to that house and retrieve your package ITS SO SIMPLE and it completely prevents package thieves it's so unbelievably easy to prevent people from stealing your packages how is it still a problem

My street has a another street on it called the same name but west & sometimes over the years we get their packages shipped to us & I’ve always hand delivered these packages to their door every time. I can’t imagine anyone doing this. That’s just terrible.

I'm from Europe and I will never understand how is a good idea to just leave your internet shoping packages outside. If we are not in home when they deliver them they just bring them back to the warehouse and notify you. It's not unsafe to order things, it is unsafe if you just leave them on your front door with literally nothing to stop anyone from just taking them.

One of solutions to this would be a mock-up of an automated sentry gun or similar security. It won't function like a real thing, saving you both from engineering and legal headaches, but will look intimidating enough to scare thieves away.

When I was 11, my brother and I saved up all our allowance for weeks in order to buy a full Guitar Hero set with two guitars, a drumset and a mic. When we finally had the momey, we found one on Ebay and placed our order. It took over a month to arrive, and when it finally did… it was stolen. I cannot even begin to describe the amount of anger and sadness that we felt that day. We both have still not recovered from it, and it’s been well over 10 years.

I had this idea years ago where we had mailbox like boxes with special keys that only mailmen and the homeowner had. But it really wouldn't fix anything

As a foreigner (Netherlands) the concept of porch pirates seems weird. When the delivery people show up and you aren't home the package gets delivered to a local post depot, usually within 2km from your house so you can easily pick it up with your ID

my husband and I recently bought a house and the previous owners put a bolted in storage container for packages on the front porch that you can lock or leave unlocked. highly recommend you get one!!!!! its not too big but big enough for standard packages

never been a victim of porch pirating or anyone in my country, solely because our mailbox is a locker, and people either deliver it directly to you while you're home, or call you and ask where you are to deliver there, usually while you're on your job. if the mailman can't find you, they just send the package back to the post office, so you could take it yourself. America NEEDS to upgrade to this level.

Everyone forgets that showing someone's face can have people find the wrong person in a witch hunt. Charlie is protecting those people.

I once had a neighbor who actually knocked on our door to say that there has been a package on our door all day and didn't want anybody to steal it. While there's plenty of jerks in the world, there is still nice people :P

As someone who doesn't live in America, I'm always baffled about the delivery system there in the US and how often porch pirates happens. Here, the delivery guy must give you the package personally and if you order it from online marketplace they have to take a picture of you (or your relatives who lives at the same house) holding the package for proof. And if you or your relative are not able to receive it, you have 3 option: first, the delivery guy would put the package where you want them to be put (they will always call or text you btw), second, they can deliver it again later on for second try (when you're already at home), and third you can pick it up yourself at the branch office in your area. I often choose the 3rd one because I feel bad, but they usually insist and do the 2nd option.

Props for turning it into a advertising opportunity but they really do deserve to have to roll the dice on what the internet has in store for them.

In Sweden and (maybe) other scandinavian countries packages get delivered to the closest store, which you can pick up by providing an otp you get via sms from the postal service

In Brazil, it your package arrives and you're not at home at the time, it goes back to a government deposit box and you're left with a piece of paper in your mailbox telling you where to go get it. You have to go to this place with this piece of paper + your ID to manage to get it. I've never heard of porch pirates in Brazil as it's impossible. So you can't stop porch pirates, you make their jobs impossible.

It's honestly surprising to hear that nothing is being done to catch these people. You'd think that with video evidence like this where their face is in clear view, apprehending them would be easy.

The thing that really grinds my gears, the police won't do anything about it. Working 12-hour shifts, they leave stuff on my porch all the time. Have gotten it on camera, shown it to the police, and they've basically said we can't do anything about it, sorry. Really ticks me off

Something my family has done often that helps: find a trusted neighbor to bring the packages in if you're away and you know something has been delivered. If you are home, get your packages ASAP.

I'm glad that in here, the delivery guy always calls the recipients phone and making sure that the package falls into the owner hands and or they could just deliver it the next day when you're available at home

I am blessed to live across the street from the sweetest retirees known to man. They are pretty much always home and the husband will come out and hide our packages whenever he sees that they are on our front porch. For every awful person, there's another good person trying to make your day better.

What makes this stuff worse is that some of these packages could have medical supplies/medicine that the person that the packages are intended for need and could possibly do harm or worse is they can’t get what they need.

It's really amazing and baffling to me that happens in the US, in my country ALL packages and any deliveries are not given unless there is someone at house who receives them. We need to sign or give an ID in order to take the package, if nobody is at house, the delivery men just go back and try again next day, then if happens again, you have to go personally at one of the storage offices to search for your package. Similar thing with food deliveries, we don't do "leave at the door", it's "meet at door".

As far as I'm concerned, the moment she decided to become a thief, she revoked her rights to stay anonymous. Show her face. If you let her get away with it, it encourages the behavior.

The thing is this would be so ridiculously easy for the police to catch. You have a literal time and date and picture of the car and the driver. There are any number of intersection cameras that they could use around the house to peg the car and the plate. Although what would be a little more scary, they could easily just run that picture through the DMV database and find the lady.

In Europe they only deliver if you're home, and if that isn't possible they deliver it to a neighbor who signs their signature and then the postal worker puts a note with your neighbors address through your mailbox. Seems like a pretty easy system, don't understand putting boxes on a porch...

My uncle passed away last year from cancer and he had a little dog. Before he passed my grandma bought a stone statue that looked like his dog and painted it for him. She decided to put that on his grave because other people had done similar to their loved ones and their stuff never seemed to go missing. Well someone stole the dog statue, it wasn't just moved by the groundskeepers to mow or anything, someone stole it. As far as I know none of the other statues or anything from other graves were stolen either

i’m singapore you don’t get the package if you aren’t home it usually gets dropped off at a nearby mall or plaza that has a delivery locker that you access with some code or your id

The probably easists way to prevent this is by having a post storage at each village or something like that and if nobody is at home, the post man writes a letter or send a sms, saying the package is at this storage and you have to go pick it up. Either your home to pick it up or have to drive for it, it's the safest and easists way to protect the package in my opinion.
