That's what is great about old comedy the entire episode is the set up for that one line at the end ,great to see you laugh so much at it .

They also expertly hide the direction it's going by providing constant laughs typical to an episode of Porridge AND the previous episode had a similar theme.

Another top tier example of building up to that last line which hits so damn good. Porridge was the best at it. No need for absurdity, just witty banter and an end joke that left you smiling.

Its a great episode and the ending is the cherry on top, everyone gets invested in Blanco being innocent of his wife's murder even the viewers, people feel sorry for the guy because it turns out that he was actually innocent of the crime he was sentenced for, but its great how one line can turn the entire episode on its head.

On the subject of David Jason playing old folks, he was originally cast as Cpl Jones in Dad's Army. Someone at the BBC overuled it and cast Clive Dunn because he was known for playing older guys. Was before Porridge, of course. Late to the day, and maybe you'll never see this. Maybe you knew it.

Brooks Hanlon was the characters name from Shawshank. I think the word you are looking for is institutionalised.

the ending of this episode is so good but in it's own way heart warming. He loved his wife and it did hurt him he was framed for her murder when in consider that in one episode he made a rocking horse for a family member meaning they're opinion may have been tainted by the framing.

@@AfterWorkReactions It was also nice the way he thanked Lukewarm. A genuine friendship made even more heart warming as this was 1977 and being gay was made legal 10 years before while Blanco was prison. Meaning he may have killed for revenge but at least he wasn't a bigot.

Of course, in Open All Hours David Jason plays the nephew of Ronnie Barker's character. It was another classic British comedy that was just unique and definitely worth a watch. Again another glimpse into British culture, that I'm sure will confuse you, initially. It is a wonderful look at how the mundane can be funny in British culture and I love seeing you learn this.

Institutionalised is the word you're looking for. But this episode is a fabulous episode and that final line delivers an ice cold punchline that's utterly hilarious. It shows how the criminal justice system isn't always right. On paper he was innocent but he was in fact guilty of murder. The whole scenario is brilliantly played out. I do miss the late great Ronnie Barker.

There are a few episodes of Porridge that spend half an hour setting up a hilarious twist in the final line, but this is probably the best one. Curiously enough the first time I watched the Shawshank Redemption I was immediately reminded of Blanco Webb when the old prisoner with the pet bird who worked the library was introduced.

I'm always amazed at how old TV shows and movies seemed to do old age makeup so well (this, Life & Death of Colonel Blimp, Citizen Kane), and yet modern films (including Oppenheimer) stumble so badly. Do they overthink it nowadays and slap too much on and focus on every wrinkle? Is it the 4k curse of high-definition? I'm baffled.

Watching this, it's hard to believe David Jason was Ronnie's Nephew in Open All Hours. Two amazing actors 👌 I love Porridge, but Open All Hours was even better imo.
