Great explanation, and great filming, thanks! My partner has a Beetle and we're learning to take care of it, and this makes the general process of adjusting the valves seem less intimidating! Also, I love that you're wearing a string of pearls while working with wrenches and a tub of grease. You're dressed nicer in the garage than I would be at a car show, lol!

Great detailed video. Another trick is to set number 1 tdc then rotate the engine backwards then you have 1 2 3 4 (don’t rotate a 911 backwards because of the chain tensioners) also run a rag through the bale and use both hands on the ends to pull down to open the bale and push up to close with scratches or mars from tools.

Somebody else commented on this, but I will add... Take the subjectivity out of the valve lash measurement by using a second feeler gauge 0.001" thicker than the specified valve lash as a "no go." For example, for the intake valves, use 0.004" as a "go" and 0.005" as a "no go." The "go" should fit; the "no go" should not. For the exhaust, use 0.006" and 0.007".

This video was thorough and well paced. You could easily use this as a guide. Interesting how so many valve covers use bolts to hold them on and this older Porsche just used a couple of spring type retainers. Great video Franny!

instructive and nicely done video! An important issue for oldtimer cars is to have a garage that is completely dry. Although the paintwork might be perfect, lingering formation of rust can proceed underneath the varnish. Garage condensation problems can occur in homes located in both hot and cold environments. Low winter temperatures, followed by the rising humidity of spring and early summer, make your garage and home vulnerable to excess moisture. Homes in areas with high humidity and occasional temperature drops will also experience garage condensation. A very common source of condensation is rainwater and melting snow from cars parked in garages. Running appliances in a cold garage without proper ventilation will also create excess moisture in the air. Excess condensation can also be caused by improper roof drainage that causes leaks in your garage.

Or just rotate the engine backwards, then it's 1-2-3-4 😎 On S-90 (616/7 engine) the intake and exhaust clearances are reversed.

Enjoyed your video. I wanted to ask if you ever use feeler gauges that are sized on ether size of the correct size to check after the adjustment. For example the .003 and .006 for the intake valve of .004. Thanks again for your informative videos.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
I have used that on the 3.2 Carrera. I actually take the clearance off the cams and it is a lot easier. You have a go-nogo set of feelers and it makes it really easy. It should work great here too! Great idea!

Excellent tutorial Franny! One question: if you were to recheck the valves in this car after 10,000 miles, would you expect them to be looser or tighter? In other words, do valves “go out of adjustment” over time in a consistent direction?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 жыл бұрын
They would wear (or pound) so I would think they would get looser over time. But, I seem to find more tight valves than loose valves weirdly. I did read that one of the folks on the 356 Registry went through the painful process of checking the valves (not adjusting) when the engine was at operating temp and they were quite a bit looser than spec meaning that the engine /head expanded further than the pushrods. Didn't expect that...

Great video as always. Have you considered a false license plate with the Heidi & FRanny's Garage logo to put on cars for videos like this one? Sort of like Bring a Trailer occasionally does with auction cars? It would help with brand awareness for the first time or casual viewer and help protect the privacy of the car's owner. Just a thought.

Actually you are roating the engine 360 degrees, we used to adjust the #3 valves a little looser, something like 7mm for exaust and 5mm for intake, that was because #3 runs a little hotter due to the cooling air being a little hotter there.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
I have heard that folks do that. Vic Skirmants posted that he check the valves with the engine at operating temp to see what the hot clearances are and they were actually a bit greater, not tighter. I thought that was interesting...
@fgjf1079
@fgjf1079 3 жыл бұрын
#3 has 3 degree less timing on the carburetor’s cam to make up for the extra heat. This can be confirmed by setting timing on #1 and then switching the timing light to #3, and seeing that it has about 3 degrees less timing. Not sure that the extra valve looseness is necessary in #3 on Porsche engines. Not sure if VW’s has this 3 degree adjustment for #3, but if not, this is likely where that extra loosened idea for Porsche #3 cylinder began.

My daughter and I just did this on her freshly-rebuilt '73 Super Beetle 1600. We went counter-clockwise, though, after #1 cylinder....pros or cons on doing it that way? Honestly I think I like doing it your way better.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
On a push-rod engine it is fine either way, as long as you do move forward right at the end to take out any slop in the valve train. You can't go backwards on the overhead cam engines like the 3.2 Carrera. Bad things can happen if you get off a tooth... That is great you are working on it with your daughter. Best Dad ever!

@@HeidiandFranny I try....I fail a lot, but I keep trying. The wiring is what's killing me right now....'73 was a screwy year, and I've been unboogering the boogering of the infamous Previous Owners. It doesn't help that the original wiring diagrams are a)Hard to read & b)Don't match up 100%

Either that or it already had one and the valves have not been adjusted since. It was pretty consistent on all cylinders. Probably a leak down test would be a good thing...
