This is a really nice video. I worked on a 906, (Barney Barnes) in the early seventies in Europe. The original engine had failed and was replaced with a factory injection engine and we struggled with getting an adequate cool fuel feed to the injection pump in hotter weather. At smaller tracks, the Corvettes could be caught easily in the turns because of their poor handling and braking. On the straights they would use their power and just take off. Remember, these cars only had around 128 cubic inches. (It was common to cheat by adding another 200cc's) but what the hey. Despite its age, we managed to get 3rd place at the LeMans short race. I don't remember ANY of the 906's back then being this pristine. They were workhorse race cars and they did very well, considering it was a sixties design with fifteen inch wheels. Once the technology rush began seriously, they were outclassed and now they seem to pop up as over-restored poodles. These cars left the factory built to win. My preference would be to keep the car "factory-rough" but oh well. Hope that the Barnes Car and the driver have survived. This is a really nice car here, but my impression is that it is geared too short for this particular track in this video. I remember "back then" that Porsche would have gear charts with recommended ratios for most of the European tracks. A "test drive" of the Barnes Car on the Autobahn back then gave us an app. top speed of 175 mph. It took the police several weeks to find us and they took the garage plates away as punishment.

I agree,the gearing is all wrong for this circuit,either that or the driver was the one who paid for the previous engine refresh.....

... when real fast productioncars like 911S and Bmw E9 3 Litres topped out at around 140 mph. I was 9 years old in 1973 and its a shame I did not see you flying by. So I had to wait for the Silver Countach around Mantua 10 years later. Regards from Munich :)

The 906 is most suited for Silverstone and slower tracks with more curves. :) My dad used to race in formel 3 in the 60s.

906 top speed was approximately 160.....around 220 horsepower....this car was getting left behind by other 906's,& 904's....may have been geared to short for this circuit

So I have been believing in a myth ... that the Porsche ignition locks were always left to the wheel .. in order to allow 'Messrs. Siffert' starting and shifting into first at the same time . having dive in 🚗;) P.S. That Corvette seems to have enormous acceleration qualities, it reminds me of the big Lady in yellow entered by Greder Racing and often (over)seen on old material.

Why pray tell is the ignition key on the right side of the steering wheel? Porsche's trademark left key position to edge the start up sequence is legendary. I suppose if this race does not incorporate that and you built the vehicle specifically for this race, then it does not matter. It just seems the heritage would demand that they make all their racers with the left side ignition position.
@kluzo9114 жыл бұрын
This car is genuine. The 906 keys were on right side.

Why does he Press clutch twice while downshifting? Is It because of the syncros?
@kluzo9118 жыл бұрын
+kalle lammi yes it's for the synchro , it's the way to do it properly with an old gearbox.
@rabbit4U8 жыл бұрын
+kluzo911 because there's no syncro but dogs, so he needs to synchronize engine speed with gearbox speed using the throttle. plus, it sounds cool!
@Darkwell00717 жыл бұрын
kluzo911 he really should blip the throttle to get the gears spinning or advance the throttle so when the clutch is released the engine r-m matches the geRbox exactly

A Porsche with keys on the right? A Le Mans racer, at that? How very curious.
@bloqk163 жыл бұрын
It was odd seeing the driver's seat on the left.
@SEARCHDESTROY577 жыл бұрын
Not too powerful compared to other cars in the race, the Corvette for example, besides why downshift in most of the curves? Double clutch with that type of gearbox that is all synchromesh? Still a nice old car
@bloqk163 жыл бұрын
That's unique with seeing the steering wheel on the left side of a European endurance sports racer.

Saw the little blue car first run at Daytona, 1966 Hoping it would beat the Ford Mk. IIs after the Ferraris fell on their swords. 176mph from a 2 liter car! 236 hp... As fast as the '64 NART GTO here, with 306 hp.. Dino 246S..... Amazing! Cor!

Not the right track for a 906,not enough top end. Sounds wonderful though!
@bloqk163 жыл бұрын
But the 906 in the 2-liter class was a winner, and placed fourth overall behind the Ford GT 40 Mk. IIs in the 1966 Le Mans 24 hours race.

Why is he driving so slow compared to others? Even other 906 are leaving him behind.

i dont think he is slow. but chances are he isn't a pro racer, rather the car owner and just want to enjoy the whole week-end race without crash or failure.

The driver isn’t one of the fastest. RPM level in the curves not optimal, plays to much with throttle and brakes. Proof: was overtaken by some racers and also by another 906. Nevertheless nice video with good sound !
@bloqk163 жыл бұрын
I got the sense the driver was satisfied with cruising around on a legendary circuit with a legendary machine; as if out on a Sunday drive. He made it look like the 906 would make a good road car with its smooth steering; unlike other cars I've seen which displayed loads of vibrations and twitchy steering.
