The one mod on my car that I'm asked about the most... is the ducktail. And rightfully so as it's super cool, right?! I probably answer questions about it either in person, in a KZfaq comment, or a Facebook/Instagram post at least 2 or 3 times a week! So here's a comprehensive answer to all the usual questions. Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts!

I think it was a good choice. The problem is that carbon fiber, when done correctly is quite laborous and the price creeps even unintentionally high. It’s not really the material which is the reason but the amount of hand work required. So then you price the product and it will easily be now over 2000-2500 euros/USD. Then you consider the 2500 is nothing if the car is worth 250 000 but it makes no sense in 25 000 car. And 996 while being an excellent value for money and a car that really does not depreciate, however, because of the production numbers it will never appreciate significantly either. And it is an old car you need love (read: spend money on maintenance). And probably the buyer, is not a guy who can spend 5000 USD on wraps snpping fingers whn he gets bored with the old wrap. Realistically a 996 owner may rationally have an annual budget of 2000-3000 euros/USD for the maintenance and he really has to consider where he puts his money for the best of the car. That is why you will find a lot of really un-superficial 911 owners in this owner group. 996 Carreras are not show off car but cars for true unpretentious Fahrspass. Another on comment on the ducktail. It not only is efficient aerodynamically (as is the moving spoiler too) in regard with Cd (drag coefficient) and Clr (rear axle lift coefficient) it also improves the ventilation of the engine bay - significantly. It does that by incresing the pressure on top of the inlet. It is the pressure difference between the top of the rear hatch and underside of the engine bay which drives the ventilation flow. If you increase the pressure difference the ventilation volume flow increases. And the 911 engine bay is one quite hot place (typically 60..70 deg C) and the engines are known to have their … “characteristics” (scoring, IMSB, RMS, D-chunk, head cracks). Obviously alot you can do to increase the reliability of the engine is worth worth the effort. The ducktail aero and the history are well documented in e.g. the Frere/Dron 911 -book. The story is that it was a systematic testing with bits in the old wind tunnet it was discovered and originally it was even higher and than what they brought out. The Porsche top family members did not like it but it was accepted for the homologation ‘72 Carrera RS as it was so significant for lap time. However, it was cut a bit shorter than what the racing department wanted. Porsche has published some aero numbers of the duck tails and it truly is an effective device. We have produced very similar numbers in our CFD-research. The big help comes for rear axle lift as the 911 basic beautiful shape is quite problematic. The ducktail reduces rear axle lift by 86 % and drag by 5%. The Clr goes from 0.243 to 0.034 (in the book errorly calculated 0.05) and Cd from 0.316 to 0.30. There is still lift but significantly less with ducktail/spoiler. Personally, I am a professional aerodynamicists and I tend to believe the numbers although motor journo Chris Harris has expressed his doubts about them - but he is a good driver but not an aerodynamicist. Aero forces go up with the second power of speed and thus under, say 100 mph you really do not feel the difference . How you feel them is really against the car weight. And about 20 kg of lift at 100 mph on a car weighing 1400 kg is not very much to feel. It is only less than 1.5%. But then at top speed it is already 80 kg it is already close to 6% - and especially rear lift is considered problematic and here at top speed it has been brought from 170 kg to 24 kg with the duck tail/spoiler. And than anaogy between the OEM spoiler and ducktail is just like stated. It is the trailing edge height of the form that is essential aerowise.

I’m a 997 driver. Love your 996. I’ve come from being a 996 hater, like most, to appreciating them. First the Turbo, then the C4S, and now Carreras. Yours is absolutely stunning and full of character. The wheels, the ducktail, the livery, the exhaust. It all comes together so well. You done good!!😂

Guys and Gals... Michael is the GOAT! His car inspired me to buy the exact same ducktail on my C2 cab. I asked him about the install and he totally walked me through it all. He was such a help for me getting mine done right. Respect, man. Thanks for everything! And cheers to us for buying this before it became a lot more expensive! I owe you. AND... it's really cool to see how Porsche is bringing the ducktails back again now. You're a friggin pioneer! :)

So I was sold on this until it seemed like I wasn't getting solid responses from the seller. He took a day or 2 respond initially when I asked if it was in stock. He stated he had them but his painter hadn't primed them. I said I'll take it as is because I'm painting the entire car anyway. Than he said he was on vacation and couldn't mail it until he was back. That combined with the feedback score I just went ahead and ordered the DTM deck lid. They told me right up front it would be 3 weeks to build once ordered Than shipped, they also told me they were made in house not overseas. None of that mattered to me but the truthfulness of thier response did. There are alot of sellers who post items and state they are in the USA and you end up waiting for longer periods of time because they're not. They arrive from overseas. Sellers should always state the truth amd let the customer decide. There's plenty of parts I'll wait for and save money on. Some I won't. He might be on vacation and his painter might be ill but it just seemed like a story fabricated with each message as to why I couldn't get one . In the end I waited longer and paid more money just because I felt the seller was an honest person and would be easier to deal with if there was or wasn't a problem. But thank you for your help loved yours and wanted it as well you had sold one for them until I tried to buy it lol.

I’m glad you got yours worked out! The seller apparently is in one of the 996 Facebook groups I’ve just found out. He posted today that he has 22 back in stock now if anyone else reading this needs one. Side note: I’m not sponsored by the seller or anything 😬

Put a second nut on those bolts and lock the two together so they never come loose. You are a driver and drive the crap out of your car. You chose the best option. The Carbon fiber is for garage queens or high net worth individuals.

I like the look of it. I like the whole “theme” of your car. I’ve watched the KZfaqr you mentioned in the beginning. I love that green. In some ways, I wish I could customize my 996 more than I have. Since it’s a fairly low mileage car (35,000) I’m hesitant on doing anything more than I’ve done.

Thanks for watching! If you go to eBay and search for Porsche 996 duck tail, you’ll find it. It’s the first one that pops up. They’re showing a C4S as the cover photo now, but if you click on the ad for $399, and scroll through you’ll see pictures of my car there. Hope this helps!

To clarify though, the drilling was only into the new fiberglass ducktail spoiler. I used existing holes in the deck lid, marked where the holes needed to be drilled on the duck tail, and then drilled them.

@davidbarukcic8364 thanks! I love it. I’ll catch up with him at some point this year and do an update episode on it.
