I have been enjoying your videos for some time, and also learning from them since my recent vehicle of 3 years is a 996. I had 356's and 70's/80's 911's prior to the 996 which is so very different than my previous Porsches in terms of tools required for maintenance. My current 996 had relatively clear headlights, just a faint yellowing and what appeared to be deteriorating clearcoat on the passenger side headlight. I have now watched several Headlight Restauration Videos with many somewhat similar procedures, and I have attempted a few methods on my headlight. In particular, I liked Steve's process and method of the headlight restauration process. I purchased various grades of sanding medium in a package with 320 to 12000 grit. Although, employing a process similar to Steve's and seeing improvements as my sanding moved from 400 to 12000 grit, my headlight is now totally foggy and much worse than it was then when I started. I can accomplish most basic DIY processes reasonably well, but I have not been able to make beneficial progress on this headlight. And, I only reduced my starting grit to 400 after starting with 600/800 for a few attempts. I may not be applying enough pressure on the initial passes with the 400 grit, but I am not sure of the amount of pressure required. The striped looking area had what appeared to be overspray or was heavily coated because this area and the fog light appeared as if something like an egg had been broken there and allowed to dry on the surface. This area required lots of sanding, but is still quite hazy. Do you think there is any way to salvage this repair? Any advice would be appreciated. I am just not sure if there is excessive clearcoat on the plastic or if I am just sanding the plastic.

Hi David! Can you send me a few photos of your headlights to contact@autoamateur.com please? It would be great to see what kind of shape they're in. It could be a few different things. Pressure might be one, but it's probably more likely the duration you're sanding for in between grits, the direction your hand is moving and/or the compounds you're using or not using to finish the job each time. I'm sure the headlight will be ok, we need to figure out what's going on for you. If it makes you feel any better - the first time I attempted this on my former Jeep Grand Cherokee I had the same result as you. For me, it was just technique, patience and practice. Speak soon! Cheers, James

James and Patrick and Steve:. For this Project 996 endeavor (which is fantastic) one would think that the three of you search near and far to find the donor car. I think I heard you say once or twice that you found the car in NOLA. Not exactly next door to the land of a 10,000 lakes. Well your videos and your desire to bring this car back from the dead (so to speak) is prompting me (and I am sure many others) to consider a 996 Project of our own. Can you suggest or provide a list of sources, websites or publications (either hard copy or e-versions) where we might be able to start searching out our own donor car? Thanks.

We started with a few places, www.copart.com, as well as Craigslist. We even looked through www.autotempist.com. Ultimately it came down to word of mouth that we were on the lookout for a car that landed us this one. So I would say just keep your eyes open and let other know what you are looking for and it will find you. I would say even check with local porsche shops, there may be cars that come in that the owners don't want to pay to fix, but are will to offload now so they don't have to deal with them.

Great job on the headlight! For some reason, as soon as you brought out the boss cream, I wondered what equivalent grit the polishing cream brought to the process. Could that be more abrasive than some of the sanding cloths that were used?

Headlight restoration is a lot of labor. You really have to weigh out what your time is worth versus buying replacements. Porsche lights are very expensive, but if you have a Honda or something else very common, you can get lights with bulbs for around $150 for the pair. Turned out great though!

After you polish your headlights you can add a lamin-x protective film to put over the headlights for extra protection.

They were invented in order to fund the education of German children through university. The replacement of these cheaply made pieces of chrome-painted plastic is such a windfall of cash for them. There is no way it cost Porsche more than a dollar to produce this piece and yet to replace you are looking north of $50.

Wow wow wow what a huge difference! I didn't know it was basically sanding that transformed the lights. Question for you guys : I have the same car and year as James and my headlights are still clear but have some cracking spreading that doesn't look so good. Do you recommend doing what you did or something else?
@patdouglas6845
@patdouglas6845 4 жыл бұрын
With spider cracks I don't think sanding and buffing will fix. At that point I believe your only option is replacement. These cracks tend to be internal to the lense and not on the surface.
@steveberguetski1784
@steveberguetski1784 4 жыл бұрын
Every 991.1 that is in our group has the same spiderweb cracks. I don’t know of a fix for those, but I will do some investigating!

What can be done if there’s a light haze on the inside?
@AutoAmateur
@AutoAmateur 4 жыл бұрын
Not much unfortunately. Once you break the seal around the lens you’re in for a lot trouble. The lens on the passenger side of the 996 has interior damage due to a crack in the lens that was sealed up with glue. It can’t be saved. ☹️
