Project 996 is here.....! I talked a little about this in my last video as a little teaser but here it is for real. In this video I’m really excited to announce #Project996 and give you the back story, the concept and what’s coming next. I so excited to get this started and I hope you come along for the ride with me! Let’s do this!!

I'm excited to see what projects you do. My 996 is a 1999 and it is bit rough around the edges, but I love it. I've driven it 5,000 miles since I bought last June. I've done a few projects on it like new tires, clean the front radiators, upgraded shifter, recharge the AC, and polish the headlights. Next up is new brakes once the parts arrive and then possibly a new water pump and coolant flush.

James wicked idea, though Project 997 would be better. Remember you struggling to fit in a 996!? There analogue Porsche’s are more fun and easier to customise and you shouldn’t loose any money doing it !! Enjoy and looking forward to it.

You must have the most understanding and supportive wife ever made!! Excited about the new build. First thing I'd do is get the headlight/fender upgrade and ditch the fried eggs, if you pick one up with a couple of bad front fenders. Short shift kit. (friends don't let friends drive Triptronic) ;-) Upgrade IMS, RMS and clutch. Gundo hack maybe. GT3 Aero kit. Stereo head unit. LOL I'm great spending other people's money. Wish I lived closer to help you wrench. Sounds like a lot of fun. Cheers!!

I bought a 996 C4S last year. Initially I just got it into a good state. This year its getting a new PCCM, Cup tyres, Ohlins, Monoball top mounts and new control arms, as well as an interior tidy-up. Next possible (expensive) steps - GT2 (or Recaro) seats, ceramic brakes, Hartech 3.9 engine, motorsport (aka Vauxhall Zafira) steering pump.

You should do the Old & New slantnose kit for the 996. You’ll get rid of the headlight complaints and also learn about body work and painting as well.

James if you love a 996 that is great so go for it, but money wise (I own several old Porsche projects and cars) keep in mind that paint jobs, spare parts, rechroming, re boring an engine and all other things you won't do by yourself, will cost about the same amount for any model, so maybe an older generation car will be worth a lot more when finished. Otherwise you might be spending more money than the market value at the end.

Great idea and best of luck! I put a SSK in my 997 Turbo last year with my oldest son and although he is not currently "in to cars" he had a great time and it was/is a great memory. As your kids get older I hope you can share in similar experiences. Enjoy the hunt!

Ever consider using the 996 to create a track car? I got hooked on track events and am doing that to my 997 over time while keeping it street legal. PCA has a class for any car. You have such a great looking 991 I suspect you would not want it on the track. Just a thought.

Reeeeaaaally looking forward to this. I fell in love with the ‘99 996 as the bridge between air and water cooled. It has the throttle cable instead of e-gas. It has no driver aids save ABS. Those first gen headlights are simply beautiful, pulling from the Le Mans racers. The focus of that car is fully on the experience of driving. My hope is that you’ll consider focusing your search on a ‘99.

Great news! A 996 project 👌🏼 I’m biased with my 99 .1 model, everyone says it’s the most alive beast and you know what I agree, it’s great to drive and having done a top end rebuild feel confident in driving it as it was meant to be driven 😉 suspension next, not a track set up, so would be good to see which direction you go in 👍🏼 excited for you and really looking forward to it too 😊👏🏼

Looking forward to the project. I can appreciate your preference for a coupe roof silhouette, although the 991 cab and beyond with integral magnesium panels eliminated the ribbed/humpback look and seem to provide much closer facsimile.

My suggestions are the following. First the 996.2 gen if nothing else it has a glove box. Also the turbo upgraded lamps are nicer. Second get the standard base Carrera there is no point in paying for the S, 4S, or targa since they all have the same power plant. As I’m sure you know the NON supple leather looks nicer, cleaner and more up to date so that would be a must for me. Finally the GT3 Aero wing as a mod would make your 996 stand out. However if you used that wing then you must properly badge the car. No one likes a poser. Thanks for your videos how about one on that beautiful 992 Aerokit of your friends.

This project idea will make for great content..if your considering a 996 salvage car for the starting cost benefits, then a salvaged 997.1 may give you a better return if sold later but still be low cost.

Ahh thanks John!! You would be very welcome to come over and join me the learning, laughing and swearing. Haha. I plan to do this in my garage, maybe selling the Cayenne to make space for it. I can always buy another Cayenne down the road... assuming Project 996 doesn't turn into Project 997... and then Project 993... and so on... haha.

Don't go for a salvage car with a salvage title. There are enough 996 cars with mechanical issues that can be picked up for cheap (At least here in Europe that's the case). Bodywork is tricky, especially when there is structural damage, and is difficult to do yourself. Better go for a roller, with something like exploded engine. Then rebuild the engine and upscale it towards a 4 liter. Plenty of good old mechanical work and would result in amazing videos.

Great idea. Get a sort of high mileage C2 manual for about $12k or so and re-do the interior so that it's more like a 997. There's lots of cheap high mileage 996's in Los Angeles.

Always has been an issue finding mods for the 991, both the 996 and 997 have so many mods to make. I'm struggling with same, just not much left to do on my 997..

Lovin the idea of the #Porject996 but for god's sake don't buy one that needs chassis work! Really looking forward to seeing what you as an amateur in your own fab garage can do - not just what you can pay others to do or get for free. ;)

You can certainly buy those, but I think if I'm going to work on a 996 I'm going to stay true to the 996. Project 997 could always come along next... :-)

If your looking for a 996 that needs work Im getting rid of mine. As you know Ive had tons of bad luck with my 996.2. Body in good shape. Transmissiom split back in October and I gave up on it. Looses oil pressure when warmed up. Needs new breaks, rotors and struts. AC works, sunroof works. Radio works. Had 2 buyers ready to buy untill Covid-19hit. Let me know if your interested.

@@AutoAmateur My 996 has been sitting on Jack stands in garage for over a year, collecting dust. Engine blew (haven't pulled it to find extent of damage) and have not had time to work on it.

Salvage car should be a great idea, just take care of the kind of accident in which the car was involved. Basicaly the monocoque could have been twisted (and it will never be a safe usable car). Pick one with wrecked fenders, or hood bonnet, or with mechanical parts to be replaced (suspension, brakes, gearbox, maybe engine) buy real carbon body parts, buy ... Wait... in fact buy wahtever you want and make us dream during the rebuild process many youtube hours in front of your channel are now scheduled in my agenda 😉😎

I still have my 996 and the wind deflector you gave me. I put so much $$$ into this car after getting a good deal on it from the start. It's a convertible, and I agree that coupes are preferable. It's not insured right now, and kind of taking a back seat to my new ride. I've posted a few videos on my channel of the C8. Check it out! cheers and have fun.

Love your idea of the project 996. You love working on cars and will get a lot of viewers. Although it's probably less expensive overall to buy a sorted 996, you can make this your own. They are still cheap as well, though I expect 996's to start going up in value over the next 5 years.

Why not buy a run-down, standard 996 and rebuild it into a real GT3 (obviously with genuine parts)? That would be something to get your teeth into!

Ahh. Don’t do it mate. Drop that $20-40k on mods for 991 rather than a 996. If you want something to play with then 993.

Magnus Walker... The "Kim Kardashian" of the 911. He doesn't know how a manual old 911 must be driven, crash his and other's guy 911 and has 3 gimmicks wherever he goes : "pedal to the metal", "go out & drive" and "Dirt don't slow you down"... I know i'll be "headshoted" by many 911 enthousiasts but after met him, I won't change my mind Anyway, if you want to create your own 911 based on a 996, pick inspiration on all what you love, all what you want to have, shake it, and show it to us. Some of us will love it (more or less), others will hate it (more or less), but in the end, it's yours... And you will share it with us, so it's cool... CheeRS 😂

992 is vomit. That rear will never be right. The rear end looks like the front end of an electric van. 992 can drive forward in both directions lol. Love all your videos btw.
