Some facts.
Porsche 914, also known as VW-Porsche, is a joint project of two German companies, once founded by the same person - Ferdinand Porsche. Oddly enough, the paths of Volkswagen and Porsche, which specialized in the production of rear-engine models, crossed again on a car with a central engine layout, which had little in common with either the Volkswagen Beetle or the Porsche 911. This inexpensive two-seater sports car with a targa body was supposed to replace the two outdated cars of the same class - Porsche 912 and Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia. Designed by Ferry Porsche's nephew Ferdinand Piëch, it featured a monocoque body of an unusual design, with a long wheelbase (2450 mm) and short overhangs. All of its panels were flat and made of steel, with the exception of the fiberglass removable roof. It was the first Porsche with pop-up headlights. Its engine was located behind the seats, and the 5-speed manual transmission was in the same unit with the driven rear axle. The front suspension consisted of wishbones, shock absorber struts and longitudinal torsion bars, the rear suspension consisted of diagonal arms and springs; both were independent. There were disc brakes on all wheels.
In 1969, two modifications of the Porsche 914 went on sale: 914/4 and 914/6. The first was equipped with an opposed 4-cylinder Volkswagen OHV engine with mechanical injection, a volume of 1679 cm3 and a power of 80 hp, the second was equipped with an opposed 6-cylinder carburetor Porsche OHC engine with a volume of 1991 cm3 and a power of 110 hp. The prototype of the third modification - 914/8 - did not go into production, but one such car with a 3-liter flat 8-cylinder engine from the racing Porsche 908 with a power of 300 hp. was given to Ferry Porsche on his 60th birthday. Another version, called the 914/6 GT, was developed to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans; in 1970 she won this race in the GTS class and finished 6th overall.
Initially, in accordance with the oral contract, Porsche took over all design work, and Volkswagen was to organize the production of the VW-Porsche 914 at its plant. But in 1968, Volkswagen Chairman Heinz Nordhoff died, and his successor Kurt Lotz stated that all rights to the model belonged to his concern, and the car should be produced under the Volkswagen brand. As a result, the deal fell through, and production of the VW-Porsche 914 bodies was organized at the Karmann plant in Osnabrück, and final assembly at the Porsche factory in Zuffehausen. The cost of the model turned out to be significantly higher than expected, and this affected sales. The demand for the Porsche 914/6 was especially low, so in 1973 it was replaced by a modification of the Porsche 914/4 2.0 with a 2-liter 4-cylinder injection engine producing 100 hp. A year later, the engine of the basic version of the Porsche 914/4 was increased to 1795 cm3, and its power with the new Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system was 85 hp. Total from 1969 to 1976 the company sold 118,978 units of the Porsche 914.
