The PORSCHE 918 Spyder is the successor to the PORSCHE Carrera GT and uses a power unit developed from the engine of the PORSCHE RS Spyder, a prototype racing car that competed in the American Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24-hour race, It is PORSCHE's first full hybrid road car with a parallel system, with electric motors in the front and rear. 918 units were produced in limited numbers through 2015.
The new PORSCHE 963, which will compete in the IMSA series, the WEC World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2023, is based on the 918 Spyder's power unit.
The body design, which was inspired by the PORSCHE 917K, Porsche's first winning car at Le Mans, features excellent racing aerodynamics, with all body panels made of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) and a chassis made of carbon The chassis is also made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
With the 138 kg lithium-ion battery, the car weighs 1674 kg, 294 kg more than the Carrera GT, which weighed 1380 kg, but this is due to the use of a full hybrid system. (With the optional Weissach package, it weighs 1634 kg (-40 kg).
The V8 DOHC 32-valve natural aspiration engine mounted midship delivers a maximum output of 608ps at 8700rpm from a displacement of 4593cc, 129ps from the electric motor driving the front and 156ps at 3000rpm from the electric motor in the rear. The maximum system output is 887ps and maximum torque is 1280Nm.
The front/rear weight distribution is 43:57, and a 4WD system is employed, with the front driven by the electric motor and the rear by the electric motor and engine. The transmission is a 7-speed DCT, which in race mode provides quick shift up/down operation suitable for circuit driving.
The performance of the high-powered 918Spyder is 0→100km/h acceleration in 2.6 seconds and a top speed of 345km/h. Although it is almost 300kg heavier than the Carrera GT, it outperforms the Carrera GT by 1.3 seconds in 0-100km/h acceleration and 15km/h in top speed, and its lap time at the Nurburgring was 15 seconds faster than the Carrera GT The best lap time on the Nürburgring was 15 seconds faster than that of the Carrera GT.
The tires installed are Porsche certified Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, 265/35ZR20 front and 325/30ZR21 rear, with different sizes front and rear. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are standard equipment, with 6-piston front and 4-piston rear brake calipers and large diameter brake rotors (410mm front and 390mm rear).
An upward-exhaust layout is used, with the intake system mounted on the outside of the engine's V-bank and the exhaust system on the inside.
The rear wheels are equipped with rear axle steer, electronic LSD, and traction control to provide stability control commensurate with the high specification of the vehicle.
The E-Drive mode allows the car to travel approximately 30 km on a full charge, and when the battery capacity is low, the car can be fully recharged in a short time by starting the engine and driving in Sport mode.
The technology of the 918 Spyder, which was developed as a future-oriented hybrid study model, has been continued in the PORSCHE 919, the Le Mans prototype racing car that later made its debut.
