The Porsche 996 Cabriolet is considered by many to be the most undesirable 911. I disagree.

110% of the performance of the 993, 200% of the liveability, and 90% of the soul for 33% of the price. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Yep. Solid math.
@MattSilverlock
@MattSilverlock Жыл бұрын
What drives the livability rating? I think one of the nice things about the 993 *is* the livability vs. earlier models, and the interior design (and materials!) aged a lot better than the 996. Price-wise 996's still remain a steal for sure and I think the fried egg headlights are less ugly in 2023 than they were in the late 90's / early 00's!

Got my 996.1 cabriolet for 25K out the door. 90K miles on the chassis. 5K on the engine and transmission. Previous owner died of COVID, and his son sold it to cover the engine and trans rebuild. I found a note from the old fellow in the paperwork about how he was keeping pace with M3's on the desert roads of Arizona after the rebuild. I'll continue to take the best care of it on his behalf.

Great review. Got my 04 C2 cab for $15k with 75k miles. 3 years of ownership and almost zero repairs. Been a total blast! LNI is a company who makes IMS bearing replacements. RMS = rear main seal. AOS = air / oil seperator (another common repair issue).
@neilfisher7999
@neilfisher7999 Жыл бұрын
Wow Will, lots to unpack here. I owned a 2000 996 coupe. It was a great car to drive. I had the IMS done and RMS was done before I bought it. To me the IMS is just a cheap insurance policy to avoid the unlikely catastrophic failure and then spending 20k for a new engine. Like all Porsches the 996 has some quirks, but it is still the best value for the money to own and drive a 911. The air cooled cars definitely are the most unique driving experience, but a 996 can bring so much driving pleasure, and a little more comfort for a lot less money and easier to maintain. Now for the headlights. The round or oval headlights are visually more appealing, but the 996 headlights have been overly criticized. The overall shape of the 996 is still stunning to me. The issue is that it was such a radical change to front end at the time and it looked just like the Boxster from the front. Over time much of that criticism has faded. To me all Porsches are special cars. It comes down to personal taste and also to your budget. More people can afford the water cooled 996, 986, 987 cars. I drive a 987 Boxster today, and get plenty of enjoyment out of it. My only air cooled was an 87 Targa. Should have kept it because of the crazy values now, but I am not good at predicting the future. But I have gotten just as much if not more enjoyment from the water cooled cars I have owned since letting it go.

I own a 99 996 cabriolet ..at 45,000 miles the engine light went on. The timing chain tensioners were starting to malfunction as the IMS was wearing down. The tensioners had to be replaced and I bought an IMS replacement kit from Vertex auto out of Miami . This replaces the ball bearing IMS with a barrel bearing one , a special oil conduit for lubrication and special tools. Of course the engine has to be dropped. A new clutch was installed at the same time. So far so good. It is a very dependable car and I think a future classic.

I set my parking brake on my 04 996, went into the store, and came out to find my car sitting crooked in a different row than where I parked it. 😲 Fortunately it was a pretty level parking lot and it didn't hit anything. The parking brake on these 996's has to be FULLY set. To this day, I am always nervous about leaving it running while parked. I really yank on the parking brake and check if it wants to move before I walk away.

I heard the setup for the accident and immediately guessed it was the parking brake. I have a 2000 996 C2 Cab - and the parking brake is lacking at best. If the car is even on a slight grade, I can yank that thing all the way up and she'll still try to roll if I leave it in neutral.

Love the beautiful nature where you drive and I really appreciate your clear passion for the iconic marque and great idea to specialize. Love the 'plain vanilla' figuratively speaking Porsche cars, even in Artic Silver, the 996 cab is still, a Porsche. Admire your honesty with your little bump. I hesitated on my decision to buy a 993 10 years ago and within 12 months they had quadrupled in price. So what to do? I liked the idea of a sleeper car that I could enjoy driving so the 996 came into view, I bought ( without knowing anything about them really ) a 2000 Cab4 and immediately replaced IMS, Clutch, RMS, sports exhaust and over the last 9 years new water pump, rear shocks, all rads and the last thing will be some paint and a hood repair. The old IMS sits on my desk, in perfect condition.... Every year over the winter I consider what to replace it with, every year in the spring I drive it and realise its a fabulous car and I have no regrets on buying what at the time was considered the ugly duckling. They say that after 20 years a good car starts to look even more attractive and i do think the original Pinky Lai design stand up really well, it was designed with the headlights so they now blend beautifully with the lines of the car , the interior I think has also worn better than many 997's I have seen. Overall really happy and it will see out my driving career and then its a decision to sell or to gift it to my sons. Great video thanks

Great video. I am also an air cooled lover and owner for well over fifteen years now. And close to seven years ago a PCA buddy of mine was looking to sell his original one owner 2002 996 cab in guards red with the matching hardtop and IMS bearing done. I drove the car and I to was very impressed and snatched it for 16k which I thought was a steal for a fun cab. I suddenly found myself tinkering and falling for the 996. It now owns a spot in the garage right next to my 1987 Carrera. They look great together, and I am so pleased with the 996 in almost every way ! Thanks again for the video, Dr. Figueras

I'm a 996 owner by choice. I KNOW many will doubt that, but it was an emotional choice. It's my first 911. It wont be my last, but I'm glad I started here. I feel there are many fair criticisms of the 996 platform, but people seem to forget that the worst example of the best sports car is still a GREAT car. It just is. It's way quicker than the numbers suggest. Coming from turbo cars with big power, I was worried it would feel slow. It's no rocket ship, but she gets down. Light. Agile. Alive. Very engaging, and most importantly: FUN While the interior may be quirky and cheap, it holds up to its contemporaries. No sticky buttons. No swathes of brittle, broken plastic. No egregious creaks and rattles. There are very real concerns with the engines, but, like most things, there's a huge over reaction to the threat. The IMS is a worry, but the issue has been mostly sorted. Get a new bearing every 50k miles. Worry over. Like any other 20 year old car, you have to sort some stuff out, but after the sorting, it's a sorted 911! I accept my place in the 911 pecking order, but if someone drives a well sorted 996 with an open mind, as you did here, the reaction is often the same: "Whoa, wait a second. Isn't this supposed to be a pile of shit!?" Thanks for a FAIR review from an air-cooled guy of a 996. And no hate here. Great review.

I have a 2003 C4S and it has turned into a daily driver based on the comfort, still fun, and real AC. If you get one with a new clutch, IMS and RMS done you can sleep pretty well at night. The headlights bother me less on the 996.2 I also have a 993 and an Audi R8 v10 and am discovering each car has it's own personality and reasons to own. One of the great things about the 996 is if your friend rolls it into a tree you can still be friends...the R8 might be a whole different conversation :) And that's the real beauty of my 996 C4S is that I can daily it and shrug off door dings and blemishes. As always great vid and nice to see you keeping an open mind on the 996 revival.

996s are great cars, just not as sexy as an air cooled. It's time to get over the shaped head lights - no one criticized them on the GT1. Now, every manufacturer uses shaped lights, even Porsche (inside a round bezel). IMS is an issue dealt with easily and will give piece of mind. The only bad Porsche model is the one you don't own.

I have a RoW 1998 996.1 C2 with the following options: Leather interior, LSD, TC+ASR, 18'' wheels. I have renewed the IMSB, RMS, water pump, cooler thermostat, coils, AOS, all chain slides. I have installed X51 extra scavenger piimp and sump and I have Bilstein B16 PSS10 and Eibach adjustable rear AR-Bar. I also had the Eibach front adjustable ARB but felt it was way too stiff, made car darty and went back to the OEM Fr ARB. My ride height is about 20 mm lowered from standard OEM. She had 70 000 km when I bought it in 2015 and now it has just over 120 000 km. I had the budget for 964/993 but being almost 2 m tall I decided to go for a 996 (that time about 30% cheaper) and invested the difference into funds. I do not regret the decision. She has been one of the best purchases of my life. She has given me a lot of joy and made me feel very deep gratitude for being in a position to have one - even if it is "just a 996". The handling is superior to the aircooled ones (993 has almost the same suspension though). It is the first 911 you can seriously trail brake. It actually invites you to do it. IMO the best steering in 911 is, against all legends, not in an aircooled but in the 996/997. The 996 is the cheapest of 911s and therefore it is the option for those for whom the aircooled or the 997s are beyond the financial possibilities. The M96/97 Carrera engines are definitely not the best engines Porsche has built but when you consider the mileage these cars have done you actually get it that the stories of the unreliability are greatly exaggerated. Hardly any other 911 engines have done more miles, definitely not virgin aircooled. The air cooled are easy to rebuild and they can do another 100 000 before the next rebuilt but the M96 Carrera engines have done almost by rule over 100 000 miles without being rebuilt. You will hardly find "the bullet proof" Mezger with those miles without a very expensive rebuild. The engine sound is pretty modest in these - dont really know what Porsche was thinking back at the end of 90s. And like with all the old Porsches I would say the cars fit best with someone who can and is willing to keep tools in his hands. If you want a car that you dont have invest as much love into buy something newer, like 997/991. It is a great car, much better than the reputation.

Interesting review. The 996 is still a 911 and may be my entry point. The headlights are fine (linkage to the GT1). The side profile is not as interesting as the other 911s to me and the center stack is cheap and ugly ( the instruments are perfectly fine). But the idea of having a usable 911 that you can drive with abandon is very attractive. The drive is what matters. My impression is that these criticisms would fade after driving one for a bit. This reminds me of the original BMW Z4 in that I could only appreciate the whole car once experiencing a great drive in it. I don't get the air cooled snobbery, either. To a lesser degree, there is some of that sort of thing in the Miata world (especially against the NC), and this is just stupid. Just be thankful that these great cars exist.

Thanks for commenting. The word snobbery gets me thinking. For me, I totally appreciate and frankly admire the die hard 996 enthusiasts, so I don’t know that I personally “look down” on the people who love the 996’s nor do I really look down on the cars. It’s just that I personally prefer the driving experience the older cars deliver. Thanks for watching.

I just bought my first Porsche, a 2002 996.2 Cabriolet in Cobalt Blue. Had the IMS done already. 100k miles. I usually mess around with classic cars but I couldn’t Help but get this one. Especially for the price. It was crashed and needed a new front bumper, both fenders, lower control arms on the drivers side, headlight, ac condensor and radiator. Already got a bumper, headlight. Changed the ac condenser, radiator and lower control arms. They didn’t cost an arm and a leg either. Last things I need are two fenders and drivers side airbag. All in minus a paint job, I’ll be about 5000 dollars in. I got it for 3300. Looking forward to getting the experience of driving a Porsche

Pre 2000 911s and Boxsters have a dual row bearing which doesn’t need to be replaced. You are better off keeping it because you will not have issues with it as long as you regularly change the oil and look after your car!

its a bearing. it still needs to be replaced as these have failed . this whole myth that has recently popped up about mk1's not needing to replace their bearing needs to be killed now as it is 100% false.

I had a 996. It's a fun car but the current asking price is just too high for my liking. High mileage examples are going for $30K +. If you ever have a problem with the transmission (especially the pinion bearing) good luck trying to get it serviced locally - nobody will touch it. Get $7-$10K ready to get it fixed. The convertible top is complicated with its clamshell design, it has lots of sensors and switches and when it doesn't work, it is frustrating to fix. Same goes for the windows & doors with their microswitches. The interior is cheap, the leather is average, the seats are not very supportive, no cupholders, and the early models had no glove box. Overall it's a good car, but not a great car. For me, the juice ain't worth the squeeze. I sold mine for top dollar and have no regrets.

I prefer arctic to polar. Don't know why, but yeah. Let's face it though, both are silver and would prefer an actual color. Biggest problem with 996 991 is that it resembles a Boxster. . . and the resemblance is more than skin deep. Great car, but they failed to keep the gap to the little bro.

I agree with your point about both being silver but I have come to love polar. Maybe it’s because I am lucky enough to have other colors in the garage, but I do think Arctic has fantastic blue undertones and suits the 993. I also think the BBS wheels with the grey faces set it off.

Great review of the 996 .. and Eric's car looks stellar.. I have a 2000 C2 with 35K on it and is an absolute blast.. Always wanted a air cooled car but bought mine just as the prices for the air cooled ones skyrocketed, so the 996 was a no brainer! My is fitted with a GT3 aero kit which transforms the car.. which improves the over all look of the stock body. I have to disagree on you opinion of the seats,,, they are about the worst seats I have ever sat in the back are so unsupportive, i have swapped them out for a set of JDM Recaro SR3s.. like night and day... As for the fried eggs, I agree they are coming around.

Also a 996 owner by choice. Spent 2 years looking for a dealer offering a single owner 996 with a complete Carfax and a clean dealer inspection. Found an '02 at a Porsche dealer outside Chicago, had it trailered to my mechanic in NY for the IMS, RMS, clutch and anything else my tech said it needed. Added Fister exhaust and K&N air. I have tracked it at Lime Rock and Poconos. No question it is the best money I ever spent. I drive it like my Ducati every day and it loves it. I have been able to do much work on my own. Easy to work on and all issues have been aired endlessly, making it simple to rectify. In retrospect, I think the C2 is better than the C1: bigger engine, glove compartment, no egg yolk up front, glass rear window for the Cab.

I don't get how you drive that 996 in 3rd and 4th gear in the review, when the whole point of that engine is driving it in 2nd and 3rd. Above 4000 rpms is when this generation of 911 starts to come alive. When the engine is warm, you can rev it up to 7000 and the engine will thank you for a chance to strech its legs a bit. I think it was Jay Leno who said in a video recently that Americans are used to V8s and are afraid of using high revs. This is an European sportscar, it is supposed to be driven at high revs. This generation of 911s are lighter, more powerful, faster and have better handling than 993s. You should have driven it like it deserves to be driven.

As a very happy 996.1 owner, its the hate thats allowed guys like me the ability to own a true 911 (no matter what the haters might think) its simply a great car at a FAIR price and that's the real difference between 996's and every air cooled, they may be great, but are the prices fair? Anyway, another great video, but stick with the bashing, every nice thing a dry-cooled guy says about our 996's cost us money!

I had 993 targa 1997 at the same time had 964 1994 convertible, I liked the 964 way more than the 993, I felt the car was built for me to enjoy not like 993 is the serving the car not to be broken and start searching for rare parts, I am going now for 996, I expect that it was made to enjoy the ride without worries, they have the best size, just change the ugly headlights with proper facelift, replace the ims bearing, and you are ready to enjoy best 911, forget other models and videos about how rare they are, the crown of 993 was the turbo and called widowmaker, they are nothing but assets now, they never in my mind worth the prices they are asking for

The real problem with these cars (all of the 996 and many of the 986) is bore scoring. In the next 3 to 5 years it is going to become a huge issue. I have a 2003 C4S who's motor has now failed for the 2nd time in its life. The first was due to some internal component failing and destroying the engine. Porsche replaced it at 17K miles early on with some previous owner. It has now developed the dreaded bore scoring on 5 out of 6 of the cylinders. It went from no signs of any real issues (no debree in oil filter no smoking or ticking) to metal in the filter 200 miles later smoking and ticking. This is all with the oil never allowed to go more than 3K miles or 6 months before changing. I never let it sit for long periods idling. I took all the precautions, and it still now needs a complete rebuild again. Look up bore scoring. I had originally thought it was only in the 997 3.8L models... however... its across the line bad news.
@SuperLoker7
@SuperLoker7 Жыл бұрын
Hi, the bore scoring problem can be solved permanently. The cure is slight enlargement of the cylinders and pressing the 3mm thick cast iron sleeves. It means the cast iron touches the pistons and rings, not the Nicasil anymore. The solution is permanent and does not interferes with heat dissipation as long as sleeves are just 3mm thick, so the Nicasil is still in the engine. We have in Poland a few companies that know how to do it well. Of course, if you fix it, it is logical to change IMS, seals, etc.The total cost in Poland is the amount 20000-30000PLN (approximately 4237-6355 USD for today currency rate). Since 996s got much more expensive last time, the amount seems okay....heh.
