Some facts.
In 1965, Porsche released the Porsche 912 - a less expensive and significantly more powerful model compared to the Porsche 911 - located in the price segment between the then still produced 356 and 911 models. In terms of appearance and technology, Porsche The 912 was almost identical to the 911 model. However, unlike the Porsche 911, it was powered by the rear-mounted 1.6-liter horizontal four-cylinder engine of the 356 SC. For use in the 912 model, its net power was reduced from 95 to 90 hp. at 5800 rpm to provide better torque at low speeds and improve engine stability. Power transmission was provided by a four-speed manual transmission.
The company's marketing department thought it was a great idea to take the body of the super-successful 911 and slap it onto a less powerful car. And since they then had at their disposal a 4-cylinder engine from the legendary Porsche 356, all they had to do was adapt it to the 911 body. Thus was born the Porsche 912, the most affordable Porsche in the history of the brand. The car was launched in 1965 and in the United States of America the price for the 912 in 1966 was $4,700. Miracle!
This is the short history of the Porsche 912, which was produced from 1965 to 1969. At first, marketers wanted to call it 902, but, as with the 901, they could not use this name, since the cunning guys at Peugeot had already registered it.
Production began in 1964 with just a few test cars. As mentioned earlier, the car combined the chassis from the 911 and the engine from the 356 model, which was stopped being assembled due to the fact that they started making this one. The next step was to reduce the price - the engineers pulled out a lot of things from the car that were also available on the 911.
And this became a formula for success: the car instantly took off on the market, especially in the USA. Low price, high quality and reliability attracted a huge number of buyers, and many, which was very important for the company, bought their first Porsche. During its first years of sales, the 912 consistently outperformed the 911 in popularity and sales levels. The final figures exceeded all expectations. The Germans managed to sell more than 300,000 coupes and another 2,500 targa bodies.
But in 1969, production of the 912 model was stopped and replaced by the 914, developed by Porsche together with Volkswagen. Despite the rather controversial decision to stop building the 912, it was due to several reasons: production resources had already been allocated to the 914-6 (the six-cylinder version of the new model) and, more importantly, stricter environmental regulations, especially in the United States.
Then Ferry Porsche said: “It is too difficult to adapt the 912 to the new environmental standards, and besides, with the advent of the 914 we have three different engines, and everything needs to be produced and maintained. This is too much for us.”
But that wasn't the end for the 912, because in 1976 the German automaker resumed supply of the model, but only for the North American market. The updated model was called the Porsche 912E and was built using a chassis from the 911 and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 86 horsepower. This time, production of the 912 did not last long: from May 1975 to July 1976. A total of 2,100 were built, and it was soon replaced by the Porsche 924.
