Funny how the 928 was considered to not being a proper Porsche when in fact it was the first clean sheet Porsche designed car, and wasn't an inherited or joint venture car.

The 550 spyder is in my opinion the most beautiful car in history. It has a very simple elegance that can’t be understated. Although it was tiny and was built more like a go kart than a car it was beautiful

1971 911 (small bumper) and the 928. I sold my 1971 911 3 years ago and bought my 928. Loved them both, but for me the 928 is a car you own and love to drive when you have been there and done that. Frank you insights are billiant - thank you.

Good call on the 928. My neighbour had a metallic green one in I think 1992 and the car looked incredible fresh, despite being almost 15 years old at the time.

A Porsche Boxster, because I used to play Porsche Challenge on the old PlayStation with my brothers and there was this guy sketching the car in side view when you accessed the intro option.... thought that was the coolest thing I ever did see. I tried to sketch that car all the way through maths class. Didn't learn much maths tho.

Good call on the 928 ! One drove past me just yesterday. Such a great design and so ahead of its time, it still looks clean and modern over 40 years later. Although I remember being more impressed back in '77 by that one piece of moulded glass on the rear of the 924…

Owned a 1985, 928S for about 12 years and loved every minute of it. Not exactly sure why I loved it as much as I did but there was just something about that shape. A misunderstood car that with a few small updates like wheels, etc. and it still looks as good today as anything on the road.

A friend and I went to an exhibition about Jiří Kuhnert in Brno (CZ) a few years ago. As an all time fan and owner of the 928 it was very interesting to see the proposals from Lapine's team. From the fonts to very elegant roof designs for the 924, exploring that particular time in Porsche's design was very interesting. I think that Porsche had one of the best design department in these years. Thank you again for these nice videos, watching them is like having a nice chat with a good "car buddy"! Bref, j'adore!

Hi! It’s uncanny how inline our preferences are!!! I personally love the 928 so much I’ve owned 6 of them! At the time I’m watching this it’s a very poignant moment for me because not just two weeks ago my 91 928 S4 manual that I’ve owned for more than 15 yrs caught on fire and was heavily damaged. At any rate, great choices! I disagreed slightly with your Alfa list, but with Alfa it’s nearly impossible to narrow it down to just three!! Here, you are spit on. Love the videos and the channel. Keep up the great work.

Agree , the 928 when it came out in 1977 it was car of the year and it was the poster in my bedroom .

My favorite Porsche designs are the 930 Turbo until the 1989 model, the first incarnation of the 944, and the original 928 and 928S.

My favourite of all the 928 models was the 928S2 model. I liked the original 928 rear lights, but I liked the small rubber spoilers and like the way they're integrated into the first design.

These are great choices, thanks for sharing. I've always been a fan of the 928 design-wise. Earlier versions without the wing (928, not 928 S) with the Pasha pattern are fantastic. I love the Carrera GT, such a great-looking design, especially the interior details like the pedals and the wood stick shift knob. 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 would be my 3rd choice. It's Porsche, it needs a 911... lol.

I was shocked when Frank brought up the AMC Pacer. I remember when I realized how similar the designs are and yet one is beautiful and the other is ugly. All about proportions.

My three favorites are the 550, the Speedster and the 917.

What an interesting channel I randomly found my way to. Would love to see a video from a designer's perspective on maintaining the lineage of a car through different generations and I can't think of a better example than a 911.

9:38 So good to see Tony Lapine mentioned. Like many others I was introduced to the 928 not in 'Risky Business', but via 'Middle Age Crazy' (with Bruce Dern). I may have even seen it in a Hardy Boys episode that aired not long after the 928 hit the US market. Could Shaun Cassidy have said "9-2-8"? Thanks, Frank!

Bold choices you've made, leaving out the 356 and the 911. I would have gone for: 356A Speedster - because Kelly McGillis drove one in Top Gun. 718 RSK - successor to the 550, grand daddy to the Boxster. 901 - only Porsche would have made a design straight jacket for itself.

The 928 went onto influence the design of the Ford Sierra with its plastic bumpers and jelly mould shape. The 3 door XR4i version specifically had the 928 in mind (the designer of the XR4i was on an episode Top Gear) with the window treatment.

The 550 Spyder is my absolute dream car, not a line that doesn't belong, not a thing that is out of place form and function in perfect harmony. 4 wheels, an engine and a steering wheel, what else do you need? Sadly I'll never be able to own one, probably won't even be able to ever afford a kit car version so I guess... Play more racing games? :)

Also the 928 had a transaxle at the rear for a near 50/50 weight distribution. It had the advantages of mid engine cars, but it was very controllable in corners, with the two heavy weights at each end of the car,

Very nice highlights, I love the 904. For years I used to strongly prefer the 718 over the 550, and I still think the 718 is great, but the more I look at the 550 the more I realize just how beautifully resolved it is as a design. And the 928...I don't quite love the car in a deeply emotional way, I just love how unique and ahead of its time it was, I just find it to be a fascinating moment in the history of cars and industrial design, both to look at and mechanically!

918, 992 GT3, and newest 718 actually.... I think the modern Porsche is very refined and hope to own one one day 🤠

1.) The Porsche 917 - the classic race car look hat set the pace for style of many race cars to come, including Porsche's own 956/962. 2.) The Porsche 930 Turbo - this Porsche set fire to the imaginations of many boy-racers including me. What a stunning look! The basis for the 934. 935.5 and the race dominating Porsche 935! The GT2 RS and GT3 RS point back to those days of thunder and flame. 3.) The Porsche Cayman GT4 - This Porsche's underpinnings remind me of the layout you described with the Porsche 550. Engine in front of the rear wheels and the fast slope forward and back. What a stance. I'd daily a Cayman GT4 all day! 3? only 3? :D GT1 Strassenversion, Carrera GT, 918, GT2&3 RS, 959 CS! (Canepa!) Frank, to my knowledge the 928 design was, ahem, highly influenced by the 1963 Chevrolet Testudo, done by Giugiaro while at Bertone. Anatole Lapine was working at GM Europe at the time and was well aware of the design. If you look at the side profile of the Testudo, then just add a couple body lines for the hatchback and...presto, 928! Giugiaro himself also used the Testudo as the basis for his initial design of the Miura, and...yep, it's there. Great vid.

So glad he brought up the 928 - Pacer connection. I was just typing a comment about that when he said it.

Cayenne - design has combined so many different elements, and done it so in a somewhat mean, agressive, native dangerous looking way. On the other side grounded, speedy and exciting design! Would be inspiring to hear Your thoughts on Cayenne 957 model(SUV), a car that saved Porsches brand! Great video, good emphasis on detailing! 550 as an icon of Car Design!

My top 3- 928S4, it was the first sports car I ever sat in as a child, the design still holds its own today, was at least 20 years ahead of its time. 356 speedster- there were many replicas on the market when was young, simple, clean, bordering on being nondescript but still so alluring. Like a bar of soap left in the water. 1972 911S before all the big fenders and whaletails, best balanced 911. That's probably why the Singers are so popular today. Special mention for the 911 2.7RS. Best big fender model.

My first introduction to Porsche as a brand was Porsche Challenge on the PS1 with the Porsche Boxster model of which BTW, that game held a competition to win a Boxster valued (according to the game case) at $115,000.

I have 3 requests. 1. Please review the current Ford GT. I’m curious what you think. I think the rearend has problems and I’m not a fan of the huge side gaps. 2. Please review the Mclaren Senna. I think this design is the exception to your rule that if a car is designed to perform at a high level, it will be beautiful. 3. Please talk about Tesla’s aging design language. The Model S is overdue for replacement yet new Tesla models are still using the same design language. All 4 Tesla passenger car designs are basically the same design with slightly different proportions. Just stretched in different directions. Thanks for all the videos Frank!

Who doesn't love all the great 911s like the 964 and 993? But I'm absolutely obsessed with the 996; The GOAT Porsche for me is the 959; and, of course, my daily driver - the 944

Good choices and great to see no 911's in your selection which I'm sure would surprise many. I agree with the 928, such a revolutionary & influential design, inside and out. Especially in early form, ideally fitted with tele-dial wheels, metallic paintwork (green, brown, silver - they all work) and Pascha check interior trim. Our lecturers in Industrial Design (RMIT Melbourne) were still referencing this car when I studied in the late 90's, in particular to the integration of bumpers/lamps and the sculpting of highlights in both front and rear fenders. I'd swap 904 for 910. To my eyes the 910 is the more cohesive, flowing design. And although I own a 944 Turbo (which drives better than contemporary 911/928) I would also choose for my 3rd, the '73 911 RS 2.7 which with ducktail visually balancing front to rear visual weights, Fuchs alloys, contrasting wheel & graphic colours, retained horn grilles & slim bumpers distils all of the best 911 elements into one pure but subtly aggressive (yet visually light) form.

Interesting choices.. I wouldn't pick them myself as the most attractive, so makes me think that Franks lifetime of living in design, can appreciate different point.. Maybe like a catchy songs vs something complicated that a musician would appreciate more, for the boldness or difficulty or a creative new idea. Had the same thought about Frank's favorite Ferraris.. which surprised me.

I love the 911 GT1 that won LeMans, I know there is a road legal version but I prefer the racing one, I find it one of the coolest porsches along the 550 you already mentioned and the Moby Dick.

I will be very interested to see a critique video on the Mercedes Benz 190 W201. It was a massively important model for MB as I’m sure you know and is only now beginning to be recognised as a classic. Very little in the way of quality content on it. Thanks!

My favorite three Porsche designs are the 944 from 1986, the 930 Turbo from 1975 and the 991 from 2012. I've owned two of these so I'm biased.
