Today we dive into the new limited edition Port Charlotte 18 year. This heavily peated expression is a blend of 74% refill sherry and 26% refill French Oak Wine. Presented at 54.3% this is a big bad islay, with a good age statement!

This probably isn't possible, but if you guys could compare this to either of the Rock'ndaal releases 2.2 or 3.2. The 2.2 is a 16yr part wine and sherry cask. The 3.2 is 20yr with 70% bourbon 30% sauternes.

This sounds like a great one. The cask selection is very different from the Bruichladdich 18, which is good, so they are both a unique experience. Ben at the Whisky Geek channel talked to people at the distillery who said that their barley is malted and peated at a maltings in the highlands as opposed to most of the other Islay distilleries that use Port Ellen so I think that has a lot to do with why the peat character is so unique compared to other Islay distilleries. Cheers

Amazing breakdown of the peat profile guys. I’ve been exploring a bunch of the Port Charlottes that came out around 2014-2016, Scottish Barley vs the Islay Barley and the early Laddies has some smoke as well. Lot of fun 🥃

Bruichladdich 18 has made it to NC (a control state that never gets higher end scotch). You should be able to find one. If not let me know…my sister lives in Cincinnati and I can get one up to her over the next few weeks. I got my PC18 from California. Like you I was willing to wait for, based on the bottle I’m calling it Laddie 18, but jumped on the PC. Looking forward to both!

My favorite bottle of the year so far. US retail is(was) between $199 and $225. Most of the bodegas and domains that Bruichladdich source their wine casks from don't allow their name or styles to be disclosed, even on the website.

Looks like they were expecting that at this price point this one will not sell well. Only PC fun boys and ppl who pay Diageo prices to get something special mostly buy this 18yo. For me this Wine Finish Series Continues but at double age and double price. Definitely its another experience worth trying. Opinions at Whiskybase are divided, individual preferences matters. Someone wrote that this is average PC and average score of 88/100 seems like confirmed that. Its still available even at flippers prices slighty higher. Thanks for another nice deep and honest review. Slàinte 🤠🥂🥂🥂🙋🏻‍♂️

You bring up some good points. You are going to pay for age, regardless, add that this is a cast strength offering with a very low bottle total. Doesn’t mean is going to be an amazing whiskey, but it does point to a higher price.

PC fan boys is a pretty darn large group of people! They've earned their fans. Not sure where I stand on price. A lot of brands are charging more for non CS 18's now days. I don't think this is wild, but I don't like the price either.

Nice review guys. Sounds like a nice dram. I'll probably pass on getting this one though for its current price. Dustin, as far as the expressions less than 10 yrs age--you should look into the Ardbeg 8 if you haven't already. I say this due to the much better mouth feel the A8 has than most of the 10s out there. I'n gleaning this from your Laphroaig 25 2018 review--that you appreciate an oily mouthfeel. Well, the A8 delivers that better than all the other in the young age statements IMO. My guess is that you'd like the A8 one or two notch score more than the Ardbeg 10 and PC 10. Pour off 1/2 the A8 bottle into samples and then let the remaining 1/2 bottle sit for at least 6 months before formulating a score. Then you can compare the "aired out" pour to the neck pour from the sample bottles. 90pts is the best score in the bottle I get with the A8 (usually after lots of air for a long time it gets best). Worth getting . . . . . . Ardbeg 8 and Laga 8 IMO are the best of the "less than age 10" expressions (and both IMO are a generally at least a notch better than most of the age 10 batches out there). I like best the 2016 bottling of the Laga 8 (89-90pts at its best), but the 2018 and 2020 are still both very good too (88-89pts).

You remember the Laphraoig 25 (2018) review well, Dustin always said the mouthfeel really stood out… Keith shares a very similar opinion on the Lagavulin 8 Cheers, Mike

I was trying to avoid limited editions which I believe the Ardbeg 8 is. That said i'm hearing a lot of mixed reviews on that one, so I haven't gone out looking for one. Personally the lag 8 is too young for me. I can't get past the youth notes on it, really makes it unpleasant to drink. That said I would agree the lag 8 has a nice mouth feel. And as mike said, our buddy Keith loves that lag 8.

@@topshelfwhisky Thanks Mike. I paid attention to that L25 2018 review since I like that series and have backups of each year. My fav. is the 2015 bottling of Laphroaig 25, then the 2017/2018 are tied (different days I like one or the other and they trade places depending on the day). The 2014 bottling I haven't figured out yet for some reason--it throws me off. Letting more air and more time write a more complete story on that one . . . . . .

Ardbeg 10 over Ledaig 10? And no Arran 10? There's some more good 10 year olds out there and younger. Kilchoman and Ardnamurchan have some beautiful whiskies under 10 years old. My PC18 is on the way. We'll see if it lives up to the hype!
@topshelfdustin3060
@topshelfdustin3060 4 ай бұрын
I've never really taken a liking to Ledaig, and only 10% of that is because it's spelled and said completely differently! Arran 10 is perfectly fine whisky, but it's not one I really see a need for. Kilchoman is a great distillery and their whiskies are getting better and better....as they're finally putting more well aged distillate into the bottles. That said with their products being mostly NAS, I didn't think about them. Certainly a good distillery. So far...Ardnamurchan hasn't done it for me. We've only reviewed one of their bottles. Hopefully other are better, otherwise I see a lot of potential but I won't be trying it again until I find one with a proper 10 year age statement. Gut feeling is it's going to be a great spirit at 15+. Same with Kilchoman! That said if I ruled the world, we'd just never release anything under 18 years old :)
