Port Pirie Long Track Speedway. The bikes roar again for the 1st time in 25 years.

We travel to Port Pirie & check out the Port Pirie Long Track Speedway. The track has not been used for speedway for 25 years & over the past 3 years Neil Burston & his dedicated team have been hard at work getting it ready for racing again.

What a magnificent effort by Neil and his crew to get the Pirie track ready to race on again. Once the track was closed down in the late 90s, I think a lot of people thought it was lost forever. Well done guys.

I remember watching racing there like 40yrs ago , I think it was always on easter weekend & the motocross was on in Pirie as well ...always a great event & weekend.

I raced there a few times with no brakes (that was the rules for mx/enduro bikes) on 1996 cr250r, 1999 yz250 & 1996 xr600. Finish racing about 1am then go to the pub, then put the brakes back on & race the king of the gulf mx on Sunday. Good to see the fence looking safer, not just chain mesh & railway sleepers 😂😂

I’m up in qld and it’s amazing to see Port Pirie getting a bit of a spotlight. Im super excited for my friend and his family and the people who have volunteered to be apart of this big moment.

Fantastic track, great video. Really enjoyed watching it was a real treat. I live in England near Manchester, so I'm a big Belle Vue Aces speedway fan. Started going in the seventies with my dad. The National Speedway Stadium, the home of the Aces, is still relatively new, and I remember how excited I was when I first heard the news of its building. Such good news amidst many track closures. So, I am thrilled for you all at the reopening of this track. It looks amazing it is clear an incredible amount of work has gone into its preparation. Great video. I remember growing up in Pirie in the 70s, & 80s. Used to the Scrambles on the Sat, & speedway on the Sunday. Well done guys 👍👍

Nice to see We call it Longtrack in Europe or Longbahn in Germany. It is more popular than Speedway in a lot of European countries and quite a lot of speedway riders double up. Kelvin Tatum is a three times world Longtrack champion and most races are held on Sundays, as on Sunday shops are closed. 1000cc R/H Grasstrack sidecars in the UK get invited to do demo races. The Continental sidecars use 500cc engines , like the solos use and go round the same way as solos. The passenger remains in the chair and lies over the guarded back wheel. But I am intrigued to see a track in Australia opening up.

It is popular in Queensland & NSW but has been lost to South Australia for 25 years. We are racing at Bathurst next week stay tuned

@@martinmotorsport3850 Hi Thanks for your comments back 👍 I did some speedway sidecars promotional work in the UK under the name Bailey Motorsport with my brother. We did several meetings on the IOW with Martin Newham and a couple at Ipswich with John Louis and at Reading before it shut down, it was a woman Pat somebody was the Reading promotor. I was over Australia this year from December 03 to January 04, staying at my daughter’s in Gosford and we went to 100 year celebration at Kurri Kurri meeting ( bloody hot), great track and good meeting. Decent crowd as well. Good luck with your efforts, keep me posted. Two grasstrack friends are still in Australia, Rob and Lorraine Wilson, her daughter is married to Mark Plaisted and they have been all over the shop. I used to help her dad Duncan Tolhurst before he was seriously injured in Germany.

That's very cool. Do speedway bikes still use castor oil ,the smell of it was a big part of it for me.

A lot still do but some are using a synthetic oil.

@@martinmotorsport3850 Iv'e always wondered, where does the smell of the burnt castor oil come from , is it in the crankcase , and a bit gets past the rings ,or, is it mixed in with the fuel ? . I'm very pleased to hear of a motorcycle speedway track being resurrected. I'm in NZ , and never got to see much speedway, except for an event in Melbourne in 1989 , and seeing Ivan Mauger doing some exhibition laps around the Forbury park horse racing track in Dunedin nz , in 1987. If I'd lived in Christchurch I would have seen a lot more.👍

How far out of town is it? I remember the Indian-Pacific stopped for a while at Port Pirie in 1981 when I was on a speedway tour of Australia, and signing the visitors book in the local library.

In the video you can see the town in the background so very close, only about a kilometer
