Having recently installed our new Raymarine Autopilot we now head north of Port Stephens to visit my friend Nick up in Forster - Tuncurry. We get moderate seas on the way up and do our first night arrival at an anchorage requiring us to use our radar.

Hey there again from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA! When it comes to memory, videos, and post production work, I HIGHLY recommend having just a small tablet (7" will do) with a Voice to Text app on while you're filming for a Running Audio Context Recording. The small tablet can be secured to you via sling, clip, etc. However, if that is too cumbersome for you, a small digital Voice Recorder works wonders: they can be as small as a Bic Lighter, or about the size of a Credit Card: models can be 'self contained' (ie, a fixed Gb size), or they can have a Micro SD (xD) slot for easy peasy swap out and Gb size modulation. Both styles can come with either a Micro USB C port OR a standard USB porting for Direct Connect. The one which is less hassle when it comes to 'losing things' is the Self Contained model.....NO itty bitty xD cards to go missing with TWO WEEKS or more of work on it, which simply is GONE into the 'ether'! I would advise you to go with the Self Contained model because of how busy you are, how much other stuff you have aboard that can disappear, and generally provide you with one LESS thing to go south on you! Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA

The footage this time is beautiful. A vlog style upload would be great for those of us who start getting twitchy after the five to 6 day mark. Quick to make, intro - couple of scenes around the deck if underway - plug the Raymarine with your current location - shots of the coastline - outro job done. Just watching the waves come over the bow of Renko as it ploughs through the swell is mesmerising could easily watch an hour or so of that. The possibilities are endless. (the oysters from Wallis Lake are sweet and juicy shucked while you wait.)

I was thinking the same thing Johnny, make these have a very quick intro, just get into the meat of what's happening that day and then wrap up. Will also do a longer video next time we are offshore. I watched a video once that was the entire train trip from Bergen to Onslow. Very relaxing! :)

A suggestion for you. On that murphy gauge you installed, fill the line with light hydraulic oil. It will make it read faster. This is used on aircraft with remote sensor gauge senders or long gauge lines. Also, be sure there is a small office in the line at the engine so that if your line should break or chafe through it limits the speed that you pump oil out of the engine. It will give you a better chance to notice before you destroy your engine from oil loss.

You can keep a small voice recorder like you use for lectures. One with a time stamp for the audio files. When you see something or want to note a point or interesting topic you can do it right then or at least the idea right then. When you go back you can speed listen and pick the voice notes that still make sense. Any live video capture en route will have the same time stamp so you can key to that moment instead of watching hours of vid hoping to remember what you saw when... And what pithy comment or bit of true brilliance we always seem to forget a minute later.

I know you're only joking but they're too heavy for a 4x4. Even a 'little' 8V53n weighs at least 1000kgs. Add about 150kgs for a turbo one. People have fitted 4-53 and 4-71s in light trucks (Ford F-100 size truck I mean) but the max rpm is 2800rpm so the gearing is not ideal. I'm only writing this because I always wanted one in a 4x4 myself LOL

@@ThePaulv12 you forgot the range rover diffs and overdrive... You're right. Far too big a lump and the torque would crucify the transmission. The 300tdi is probably the best motor, but the V8 petrol is lovely. I really liked my TD5, but the reliability issues spoilt it for me. My brother had a series with a chev 4100 straight six conversion. That worked well but we never got the gearing right. His V8s 110s were much better. Even if my dead slow diesel series III was better off road in mud.

@@kevgermany I've got 2x 1980s V8 Range Rovers (both not going) but the motors purr. I also have a 1984 Toyota Landcruiser FJ45 Troop Carrier with a new (not reman) 350 V8 that I put an Offenhauser cross ram intake on with dual Fitec TBI carbs for no other reason than because the muscle car hobby has become gentrified and I can no longer afford to buy any muscle car I like. I finally understand why guys build trucks now. My grand plan for the Troopy is to fit 55% lower low range gears in the transfer case and then convert it to auto. I'll use a TH700/4L60 based tranny. I reason with lower low range it'll work well on steep descents when camping and four wheeling even as an auto. BTW, torque of 8V53 isn't that dissimilar to a 6 litre V8 petrol engine perhaps +250ft/lbs. Thing is being a 2 stroke I could imagine high torque production down around 750rpm which might be a bit hard on the clutch and driveline. It's not so much the amount of torque but the torque they make at low engine speeds. Mmmm??? - maybe you're right re the driveline after all LOL.

Good to see Vics in the video! Great idea to do some shorter vlog style releases more regularly. Give mum and dad a shout if you stop at Hervey Bay at all. ;)

Had I known you were coming to Forster (or when at least) I'd have stopped by and had a chat.

I had a chuckle - I thought I was the only person who called it an ‘olive’. And, I’m an aircraft mechanic.

@@1breematt No mate, It's an olive. It's Farda was an olive, It's Mudda was an olive, That makes it an olive. Well, that is how my old Dutch father in law would explain it. :-)

Yes, need to be careful to check the conditions before committing to the coastal hope. No point leaving one port if you can’t get into the next.
