What is Port wine?
Port wine is a sweet wine that’s fortified that usually comes from Portugal (authentic), although this style of wine can be made in other countries.
Styles of port wine include Ruby Red, White, Rose, and Tawny.
Ruby red, Rose, and Tawny port wine use Tempranillo grapes. While white port uses indigenous grapes of Portugal like Rabigato and Malvasia.
Port wine usually has flavors of caramel, cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla, oaky notes, red fruit notes, and black fruit notes.
Port wine is usually served below room temperature (60 degrees) in a smaller Port glass and should be only poured in 3 oz. servings because of the concentration of alcohol and sweetness.
Fun fact: Port wine from Portugal is traditionally still crushed by foot (ew), although most manufacturers have created “mechanical feet” to reduce manual labor.
Port wine usually lasts for up to 2 weeks and sometimes up to a month after opening a bottle if stored properly! Check out our video on how to properly store a bottle of wine up above.
What region does port wine come from?
Port wine usually comes from the Douro Valley of Portugal.
Only port wine made in this region can be labeled as “port wine,” similar to France’s champagne.
The wine is then fortified with spirits to delay the fermentation process, leaving additional residual sugar (which makes the wine taste sweeter) and gives the wine higher alcohol content.
What are the different styles of Port Wine?
First, there’s Ruby red Port Wine. Ruby red Port usually has flavors of chocolate, cinnamon, red fruit notes, black fruit notes, and is less sweet. This style is easy to tell apart from the other styles of the port due to its Ruby red color. Substyles of Ruby port include Ruby, Reserve, and Vintage.
Then there is Tawny Port Wine. Tawny Port usually has sweeter flavors of caramel, fig, clove, oaky notes, and nutty notes. This Port wine usually has orange hues in color. Substyles of Tawny port include Tawny, Colheita, and barrel-aged, up to 40 years.
Rose Port is a newer style of port wine. It usually has flavors of strawberry, raspberry, and caramel. As you could probably guess from its name, this port wine is usually pink in color. Again, this is a newer style of Port Wine that hasn’t been much explored.
Last, there's White Port Wine. White Port usually has flavors of citrus notes, tree fruit notes, and nutty notes, the lightest of the colors. Substyles of the white port include Standard and Reserve.
What food does port wine pair with?
Because port wine is usually sweeter in flavor, it pairs well with desserts. Port wine pairs really well with chocolate and caramel desserts because of its rich flavor. One of our favorite dessert pairings is creme brulee with a tawny port wine
Port wine also generally pairs well with rich cheeses
Salted nuts are another great food to pair with a Port Wine (and remember you want to match the flavors of the wine with the flavors of the food).
If you want to learn more about how to properly pair wine with food, check out our previous video up above
What port wine do we recommend? (1)
Our favorite port-style wines to drink for beginners is Yalumba Antique Tawny. This wine has hints of caramel, toffee, oak, almond, hazelnut, raisin, and fig.
