In this video, we go over the top 10 beginner mistakes people do with wine. Whether you're new to wine or more experienced, this guide will ensure that you do not look like a beginner next time you're drinking wine.
Don't forget to like this video and SUBSCRIBE to our KZfaq channel so you will be notified about our weekly wine videos!
This beginners guide begins by describing why putting ice in your wine glass is a bad idea. When you add ice to your wine, it waters down the taste of your wine. This can make it more difficult to taste the more subtle and complex flavors in a wine. Instead, put your wine in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to cool down your wine
Then we describe the difference between Champagne and sparkling wine. As a general guide, one should refer to sparkling wine as such instead of calling it Champagne. Champagne is designated for sparkling wine from the champagne region of France. Calling all sparkling wine Champagne is a common beginner wine drinker mistake.
A lot of beginners to the wine world keep open wine for too long prior to drinking the entire bottle. Generally, a bottle of wine only lasts for a day or two. After that, your wine will taste off. This is especially true for red wine. If you want to keep an open bottle of wine longer, use a wine saver!
If you overfill your wine glass with wine, you may not be getting the full experience out of your wine. Wine glasses are designed to keep your wine at a proper temperature and to assist you with smelling a wine. As this guide describs, overfilling your wine glass is a mistake because it prevents the wine glass from having these abilities.
You should never hold your wine glass by the bowl. Although a lot of people do this, especially at wine tastings, it is a total beginner move. Instead, hold your wine glass by the stem to keep your wine at the proper temperature.
Always make sure you chill your wine prior to drinking it, including red wine. Use the 30-minute rule as a guide to ensure your wine is at the proper temperature.
You always want to store your wine in a dark, cool location. Beginners will often make the mistake of storing your wine in a warm location, such as the kitchen. Instead, try storing your wine in a different location to keep it cooler.
If you order a bottle of wine at a restaurant, do NOT smell the wine cork! This is a common beginner wine drinker mistake. You will not be able to judge the quality of the wine based on how the cork smells.
Be sure to let your wine breathe prior to drinking it. The mistake of not doing so will keep you from picking up on more subtle and complex flavors in a wine.
Last, a wine with a twist-off cap or a synthetic cork is not necessarily lower quality! Synthetic corks and twist-off caps preserve wine better than natural corks.

The taste goes bad after a few days but you can still drink it. You probably could drink a year later and not get sick since the high acidity and sugar, will just taste horrible

So I have a question for you guys! First off, thanks for the video and I loved it. But I am decanting a bottle of Borolo (Red.... fantastic 2013) and you mentioned the 30 min rule... so if I am decanting it for... say, 1.5 hrs... then would I put it in the fridge, in the decantor, for 30 min before pouring? Not much room in my fridge for a whole decantor hahaha... whatcha think?

Natural corks are better because they allow a certain degree of oxygenation that makes the wine develop once it's bottled.

Mistakes: nothing says “noob” more than saying “I don’t like Chardonnay”. There are too many styles to be able to make that statement. I like to give the ABC lot a glass of champagne - oddly most of them like that 😊.

Ice in your wine is fine. Drink the wine you like the way you like it. Don't be snobby about wine. Wine is meant to be enjoyed the same way beer and lemonade are. Chilled red wine?!?!?!?! What???? Maybe if you live in Arizona, but it should be cellar temperature (55-60 degrees) not refrigerator temperature. Not all wines need or even should be aerated. Deep, heavy reds yes. Riesling? No.

The cork sniffing isn't to choose your wine, it is a way to know that the wine hasn't gone bad. Quoting; "The taint kills any of the wine's original aromas and usually creates a dull smell often described as wet cardboard, mold, rotten wood or fungus. If you get a whiff of any of those odors from the cork, your wine may be "corked"
@WineTherapy
@WineTherapy 3 жыл бұрын
You're right, you always want to examine a wine that's served to you to make sure it's not "corked." However, you detect this by smelling the wine itself, not the actual cork.

@@jamesmcluvlee True. The reason that the server or sommelier will put the cork next to you is more so to let you VISUALLY inspect the cork, to make sure it wasn't damaged or degrading, and to ensure the bottle was stored properly. If the bottle was stored on it's side like it should be, especially as far as red wines go, the wine should've been in contact with the cork and it should be stained to some degree. How much it's stained depends on the vintage generally...an older wine will seep more into the cork as time goes on. That's basically the gist of it. A lot of people WILL smell the cork though in a restaurant setting. I've seen it more times than I can count and I've even done it once or twice before I had a much more knowledgeable "wine friend" call me a newbie at the dinner table lol. Lesson learned! It's not to smell if the wine is corked or not. I promise you, you'll find out much faster if the wine is flawed in some way, whether that's cork taint(smells like wet cardboard or kinda moldy, wet dog even) or there's some other flaw like excessive volatile acidity, by actually smelling the wine in the glass. Once you smell a wine that is badly corked, it's an odor you'll never forget from that point forward lol.
