In this GDC 2012 talk, Valve's Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek (not shown, but they're there -- promise!) discuss how Valve created Portal 2, the sequel to the beloved game nobody thought needed a sequel. The talk covers the entire process from inception to the completion and reception of the game.
GDC talks cover a range of developmental topics including game design, programming, audio, visual arts, business management, production, online games, and much more. "no new ideas in the company, so he hired them" That's a fine way to do business. What? They are giving money to good developers to make games that end up good... how is that a problem? The problem with Valve now, is they are drunk on money from Steam. They don't want to hire good ideas and makes games off of them. They are "Valve. We used to make games. Now, we make money."

@fieldrequired283
@fieldrequired283 2 жыл бұрын
It feels really abrupt as a sudden ending to the game, but anything less wouldn't do Chell's voice reveal justice. The game wants to carry on a little longer to wrap things up, but as long as that's the ending, it can't without defeating the power of the moment. I can see why they cut it, even though I really loved the way the scene played out.

@@daniman0114 Yea. Portal 2 was wrapped up in a nice little bow with Chell being allowed to leave Aperture. We also know the origins of Aperture. Nothing new can really be added to the story without it being bland or retconning most of Portal 2, but that's what the Co-operative Testing Initiative and Perpetual Testing Initiative are for. Perhaps they can be launching grounds for new stories in the Portal Multiverse, or an alternative style such as in Aperture Tag. The possibilities are endless...yet they're also constrained by the engine. Half Life has been called the testing grounds for new game engines by Valve itself, even. Half-Life Alyx would usually lend itself to this trend...but Portal VR? Can I have "getting people sick" for $500, Alex? Honestly, the real question isn't if there will ever be ideas for a Portal Sequel, it's if Valve will continue making non-VR engines.

I get the concept of wanting to move away from Portals. The whole point of Aperture Science is that it's this huge science facility like Black Mesa so of COURSE there would be other experiments besides the portal gun... But that's the thing, people played and loved a PORTAL game, not an Aperture Science game. Which is why I'm glad they added back in the portals because otherwise it wouldn't really be Portal 2, it would be more like a Portal 1 spinoff game within the same setting.

The co-op endings are really funny (especially the DLC one), you should look at those. I feel like in contrast to Half-Life which should definitely get a 3rd game, Portal isn’t super desperate for one. For Portal, the main story of the Aperture Science Enrichment Center is for the most part, successfully concluded, and it ends on a very very high note (for both the single player ending, and the ending for the co-op DLC, which is pure gold lmao). But for Half-Life, it kinda ends on a somewhat inconclusive or “empty” note, there’s still more stuff that could happen and stuff that needs to be concluded. The only “more” content I can think of for Portal would be in the form of prequels. Perhaps these prequel games could focus on a different character, and could take place prior to Portal 1, or between the events of Portal 1 and 2.

Well I'm glad they didn't do the observer effect plot, because that's actually a complete misunderstanding of the observer effect. It has nothing to do with a conscious observer, it just means "observation requires interaction, and interaction requires the particle to pick a position". The photons coming off the screen you're looking at don't collapse their wave functions only when hitting a human retina, they collapse their wave function whenever they hit anything at all. Schrodinger's cat isn't actually in a superposition of dead and alive, because it's a macroscopic collection of interacting particles which therefore have to have a concrete state. It's just a fanciful metaphor.

The thing is, they work a long time to make something awesome. Then because of that they grow overly self-critical. But because it takes a very long time people expect more so they work longer. It's a never ending loop. Half-life 3 confirmed for 300010 AD

Speaking strictly for myself, I am *not* one of those gamers who only looks straight ahead. Never know when texture differences in a room might lead one to the right direction...or to 'who knows?'... and sometimes, it just pays to observe all of the asthetics in an environment. Sometimes.

Lasers do not have the same properties in my opinion. They are there instantly. Meaning puzzles as in the first game, where the energy ball can move through an energy field, together with the player, won't be possible, as the portal for the laser will be closed, once the player walks through an energy field.

Re: outward forms of expression when doing something alone. There was a study I read about that showed that people don't really laugh out loud when they are by themselves. It's why TV comedies put a laugh track in their shows. It's to help the viewer to know that it was okay to laugh out loud.

Dear Developers, It's OKAY for a player to look around for 30 seconds to figure out what to do next. We are not all going to give up and rage-quit in less than a minute, and anyone who would, you probably shouldn't be worrying about while designing your game and cutting content.
