Porter Robinson - Mirror (Official Audio)
my album "nurture" is out now: porterrobinson.co/nurture
mirror is a song about the costs of being hard on yourself. we all have these avatars that we give to our critical inner voices - we might imagine a scornful parent telling us we’ll fail, or a critic telling us our work comes up short, or a society telling us that we aren’t good enough - it’s about recognizing that most of this criticism is self-inflicted. for years, i was imagining the worst thing a critic might say about my music and looking at my own work as negatively as possible as a way to protect myself from criticism, but it never once served me. my hope is that other people can overcome this same kind of shame - it can be really liberating to recognize that most of the time, we’re only letting our own thoughts get in the way, and we can do something about it.

Lyrics:
Verse:
Well, you were the aftermath
Of every judgment
So cold by the sweat that
You’ll waste away
And you carry your enemies
But they’re so familiar
I’m sick of the company
So I cull the shame
Chorus:
And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden
Yeah, do your worst, all at once
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
And it’s not the voice of all the others
You’ve only said it to yourself
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
Narrator: (They come to feel like things we’re saying to ourselves.)
Verse:
An inch from my ears again:
“You should be sorry,”
A solemn man:
“A better song could fix my problems”
I’m tired of your questioning
You’re cut down too easily
And I don’t know what’s good for me
I can’t decide
Chorus:
And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden
Yeah, do your worst, all at once
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
And though they sound like one another
You’ve only said it to yourself
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
Narrator: “Now these voices have become our own.”
Verse:
An inch from my ears again:
“You should be sorry,”
A solemn man:
“A better song could fix my problems”
I’m tired of your questioning
You’re cut down too easily
And I don’t know what’s good for me
I can’t decide
Chorus:
And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden
Yeah, do your worst, all at once
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
And it’s not the voice of all the others
You’ve only said it to yourself
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden
Yeah, do your worst, all at once
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
And though they sound like one another
You’ve only said it to yourself
I know what you want from me (from me)
I know what you’re thinking
Narrator:
Sometimes, the inner voice is encouraging: Calling for you to run those final few yards;
You’re nearly there, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going. It will all be OK in
the end.

I'm starting to really get a solid feel for how this album is shaping up so far. There's this intensely positive undertone throughout all of the singles, with each song addressing a hardship that Porter has had to overcome. This song paints a brutally honest picture of how critical artists can be of themselves and that Porter struggles like the rest of us with fighting those inner demons. What a beautiful song and message.

Coming from a place of incredible self doubt of what I've done in my life with what I've made, i really appreciate this song so much. I don't know if I'll ever realize how much of done or how many people I've impacted but I am learning to appreciate life more and trying not to be too hard on myself since in the end, I am proud of what I've made despite what I constantly tell myself. I have a bad habit of comparing my music to others, saying I don't deserve to do what I do since I'll never be as good as others, but sometimes, you just have to work on yourself and progress at your own pace. Thank you Porter~

That line about the voice of all t others, when “you’ve only said it to yourself” hits me hard. 20 years later, I’m still learning how to separate how I feel from the horrible things people said to me when I was young. I often hear “you’re a piece of shit” or “you’re a failure” when I’m in a low place. But the truth is, it’s my own voice saying it now. Sure, people said it to me once, when they were beating t he living hell out of me. But it’s time to stop repeating it over and over again in my head, like a mantra. Counseling and meditation are teaching me that I have the power to change that inner voice. “it will all be okay in the end”

that final Narration is what hit me deep in my heart, sometimes whenever i want to drawing and decided to call it a day, there's an inner voice speaking to myself to don't stop yet and keep on drawing until you're actually satisfied with the result, despite with the worries that i'd be wasting my time instead, the inner thoughts of mine just keep on calming me and telling me "You'll be fine, you can forget those once you actually finish it in the end" TL;DR, I was the type of someone that won't leave their work behind until i actually finish it

Those 4 repeating lines in the end, followed by "it will all be ok in the end", which then launches directly into "Something Comforting". It makes you feel so vulnerable. But the message in "Something Comforting" tells us it's ok to ask for help, to share our struggles with someone else, and to embrace our struggles. I see it as the most beautiful, yet emotionally taxing part of the whole album. It's when the album finally falls from the climax that is Mirror.

This is probably my 50th time coming back here... it hits different this time for me. I made a Porter Robinson mashup about 2 years ago (of Shelter and some of my favorite Worlds songs), and it absolutely blew up after about a year of nothing but 1,000 views. Nearly 2 million now. It was more than I could've ever hoped for. All the support made me finally feel excited about music again for the first time in a while, and I started creating as much as possible. I released an album where I poured my heart into the storytelling, production, lyric-writing, and singing... and nothing. Almost all of the support I had gotten effectively vanished. I realized the curse of having a mashup get big: most of the time, they're there for the music - not for you. Over the last couple of months, I've felt more and more depressed over my music. I keep creating, and yet (to a point) it feels like I'm more or less screaming into the void with everything I do. I've felt a lot like giving up completely, because I've felt like there's nothing I can do to ever become a "good" artist. And I feel like even if I achieved the peak of what I was able to do, I would still be doomed to fail. It's frustrating, painful, and demoralizing. And then I hear this again for the first time in a few months (as well as all of the Nurture songs thus far), and it's like it's speaking into my soul. Songs about the desire to chase something that continuously runs away from you, rather than embracing what you have. Getting over the desperation to create the "perfect" song, for the sake of creating something that speaks to you on a deep level. To not stress out so much about the short-term, and to love what you do and what you create... because it's yours. I guess I had never really listened to the lyrics this deeply before. I'm not magically cured or anything, but the Nurture songs are exactly what I needed to hear at this moment in time. I'm not gonna give up... because I *do* love what I do. I had just forgotten for a while. Thank you, Porter.

Porter, I've never felt more connected. When the lyrics came out my mouth, they hit very hard. This is the ultimate case for almost every single artist I know including myself. I never felt supported by friends, but in reality our interests are so far apart. I was demonized for pressing "buttons" and not following my peers in business or medicine, but my friends only lived their life once, and we're all learning to be better people. Because of over stimulation, and the disgusting amount of toxicity in our culture, we tend to imagine the worst as a safeguard. I don't even know how that makes sense, but I've been making music almost every single day since the age of 13. I'm still contemplating whether or not I should release anything at all. It's so hard when all you can think about is failure. But this song... made me very emotional. I'm going to keep fighting this feeling because at the end of the day, the first step is getting your music out the door. Thank you porter, for everything. [Yes the grammar in this paragraph is appalling. so yes, I edited it]

You should release your music, I’d listen! As a fellow artist I know the feeling. People think because you choose creativity that you’re taking an “easy way out” when in reality it’s your passion. You should take your first step and go ahead and release your music. I’m sure if you post it to KZfaq and Reddit people will give it a listen.

@@lemonmeringue7850 I really don't want to be "that guy" and start advertising in the comments haha and the stuff on my main channel is honestly a fucking joke XD. I've actually embraced the fact that I haven't released music in a while, and maybe it's meant to be. But yes, as long as I keep it up, I think it will manifest into reality. It's just harder then ever, and our generation has loads of challenges. I often look back and think to myself that If i started releasing music as I progressed I'd tap into the algorithms and get a head start, but I really hate the business driven mindset (which unfortunately is very prevalent in todays music scene.) I'd rather have a side job and still pursue music, as opposed to destroying my perception and joy for the craft of music production by turning myself into a product. Ultimately it has to boil down to that, but I think the idea is to produce something one is comfortable with, and in my case thats progressive techno/house. My goal is hopefully one day to build a fan base around my sounds and slowly transition into my ultimate sound which will come with time. I hope this makes sense. And like I said, the things on my channel are a joke. I produced them for my sisters birthday and I made them pretty cheesy (she's 13 and super into k pop haha) also for the record im 19 now. WOW this was a long type. But if you dm me personally, we can exchange some information :)

This song was exactly what I needed to hear right now. I currently am getting ready to start college and I move-in in less than 2 weeks. This last month has been all those voice in my head constantly telling me that I was going to be a failure, that I wasn't going to get anywhere in college...Its been to the point where I have had multiple meltdowns over this anxiety and fear that these voices keep bringing up. But this song and these words that it carries hit me instantly and had me in tears. I could just look back and look inside of myself and truly see those voices for what they were...just my voice beating myself down. This song and every other song in this album has had such a wonderful message in each. I just have to say thank you Porter for all of the wonderful music you make and I know you might not see this comment but I just want to say as well that I am so happy to see that you have found your reason to make music after reading what you went through after making Worlds and then coming up with Get Your Wish. Lyrics: Verse: Well, you were the aftermath Of every judgment So cold by the sweat that You’ll waste away And you carry your enemies But they’re so familiar I’m sick of the company So I cull the shame Chorus: And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden Yeah, do your worst, all at once I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking And it’s not the voice of all the others You’ve only said it to yourself I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking Narrator: (They come to feel like things we’re saying to ourselves.) Verse: An inch from my ears again: “You should be sorry,” A solemn man: “A better song could fix my problems” I’m tired of your questioning You’re cut down too easily And I don’t know what’s good for me I can’t decide Chorus: And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden Yeah, do your worst, all at once I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking And though they sound like one another You’ve only said it to yourself I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking Narrator: “Now these voices have become our own.” Verse: An inch from my ears again: “You should be sorry,” A solemn man: “A better song could fix my problems” I’m tired of your questioning You’re cut down too easily And I don’t know what’s good for me I can’t decide Chorus: And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden Yeah, do your worst, all at once I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking And it’s not the voice of all the others You’ve only said it to yourself I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking And I know you’ll say how I’m a burden Yeah, do your worst, all at once I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking And though they sound like one another You’ve only said it to yourself I know what you want from me (from me) I know what you’re thinking Narrator: Sometimes, the inner voice is encouraging: Calling for you to run those final few yards; You’re nearly there, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going. It will all be OK in the end.

This song really does show how bitter we are to ourselves I personally run a team however I'm always so afraid that people think negatively of me, even though I do know they've always been supportive. It hurts, it really is like a choking feeling, but thanks to Porter at least I get my emotions to be free, and I can feel myself healing, even though it is just a slow process.
