Nate, 22, said it took three doses of Narcan to revive him when he overdosed on fentanyl Sunday night - one of 11 overdoses reported by Portland police in the area over the weekend, three of which were deadly. Nate told KGW he wants to kick his fentanyl habit more than anything.

I've worked at the hotel across the street for 4 years before the pandemic. That building has been completely empty of business since 2016 and since has been a haven for all homeless for good or bad. I had to personally deal with people from that spot causing problems at the hotel. I have always wondered who owned the building and why nothing was ever done. There was small fencing around it for a year or 2. As far as I know the ceiling collapsed on the inside. 7 years of disrepair and people damaging it more. This building needs to be condemned and torn down.

yet, it the water gets shut off to my house the city declares it condemned and will want to confiscate it. these kinds of properties are a blight on every city, homeless or not. i'm sure someone would point out the legalities of why they're not torn down or forced to maintain the structure, but in my way of thinking just paying the taxes on abandoned properties isn't enough if it's been condemned for x number of years. that could be why cities don't pursue demolition, force the owners to sell, or make them renovate because if the city takes the property they're stuck with no tax income on it and now just have the financial burden of demolition on the taxpayers. you can't force someone to pay for a tear down to the tune of millions of dollars if they just don't have the money. cities already put aside a certain amount for demolition as it is, but it's never enough.

@@olecamohatmcgilicudy4256 this is true, there are bad landlords. anyone in a dire situation has some options; depending on your state, you can withhold rent or put rent in escrow until repairs are made, you may even get a rent abatement for those months. slumlords are bullies, i don't know if they know how to manipulate the system as much as push around people who can't or won't push back. we'd probably be surprised by what landlords can get away with, too, especially when it comes to things like section 8 or rent-controlled properties simply because we're entitled americans who expects perfection at below market value. i think that's an issue where there's a ton of misleading information and no one is really sure of their rights and obligations. believe me, as someone who's watched his mother rent homes out to people and did everything in her power to do right by them, renters can be the absolute worst scum playing their own legal games. it goes both ways. right now she refuses to rent the top of her duplex out even at double the usual rent price just because she's over dealing with renters.

@@olecamohatmcgilicudy4256 how about the scum tenant who tried to burn my mom's house down she was renting out to avoid paying rent? or the $25K damage another did to a different house, then her insurance dropped her. those are the worst example i can attest to from experience, but that's not including the thousands of dollars she's had to pay *on average* just to get the place back to a livable condition, and that's doing all the work herself. meanwhile, they live six months rent free, suing them is absolutely pointless, and neverminding all the drama, chaos, sob stories, lies, and bullshit these prospects that good on paper bring. while i sympathize with you, that's not a landlord, that's a thief and a con-man. try to be a good landlord, see how well that works out for ya. you'll gain a new 'appreciation' for humanity once you do.

Portland voted all this in (and continues to do so)...the policies of decriminalizing drugs across the board thoughtlessly has just enabled and attracted all this. You get to a point when you realize there is really nothing you can do to help people that don't want to be helped by you or anyone else trying to help. Short of forcing them into housing to get them off the street, treatment, or therapy, which the court system has already said you can't force anyone to do, what are you supposed to do? Sad to say this but the only option is to send out recovery teams every morning to collect and dispose of the bodies, and eventually the problem will take care of itself.

I saw a video a little while ago, where people were in Bosnia, walking around the city. It was so clean, and beautiful. No graffiti, no homeless under tarps. It reminded me of what cities here looked like before those in charge lost their minds. I believe in compassion for our fellow man, I just think it has been misplaced compassion at best. Letting people do whatever they want to wherever they want to doesn't help anyone. The people with drug problems are still dying. Those with mental health issues are still suffering. But now everyone else suffers too. Businesses close. The owners have to find another way to make a living, and there are fewer opportunities for those who don't want to end up homeless. What about compassion for all of those people, instead of the ones who don't care. Like the guy here who is fine with being a drug addict on the streets. People like him, whether they see it this way or not, are ruining the lives of others in these cities. Ruin your own life if you want to, but find a way to do it away from good people who want normal productive lives, or you don't deserve any kind of compassion. This can't continue.

Cindy, I am as concerned as you are about this, but I think we are fighting a losing battle for the time being. The Cartels have a strong hold in this state along with other states on the west coast, and the rest of the country for that matter. As long as our southern border is left wide open, the Cartels and drugs will continue to flow into our area. And as long as drug use remains decriminalized there will always be a high demand for them.

That is how these countries are beating us down, and have been for years. It didn't help that our government made it all legal (that was stupid). Its like we were set up to lose this battle. The answer is not to use drugs and imprison those who do and anyone possessing drugs. Otherwise, we continue down the same path. Do what you did, get what you got. It really is that simple.

When criminal activity is decriminalized & getting into rehab treatment is voluntary, this is the result. What so many of the “advocates” fail to understand is that what all these addicts need is uncompromising tough love, e.g. to be forced off the streets and forced into treatment. That’ll never happen, though … so, welcome to the new Portland.
