In this video essay, I take a look at the film "Portrait de la jeune fille en feu" (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, 2019) by Céline Sciamma, starring Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant.
Specifically, rather than to examine the deconstruction of the gaze in art or the artist-muse relationship, I wanted to focus on an aspect I haven't seen as much talk about: the use of silence and diegetic music in the film. It connects to Céline Sciamma's feminist vision and her way of implementing it in a cinematic fashion.
Something that could be further explored, but which I didn't focus on, would be elements of social mobility, class distinctions, and so on; I'm personally not sure that the film wishes to comment on them in much detail, so I didn't make them part of my analysis.
SOURCES that I used to inform myself, apart from the film, were two interviews with Céline Sciamma: One in the IndieWire Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, 18 February 2020 (www.indiewire.com/2020/02/por...) and one in Film Comment, Nov-Dec 2019 (www.filmcomment.com/article/i....
The MUSIC in the first part of the video is from Christoph Willibald Gluck, Orfeo ed Euridice, Wq. 30, 1762; Act 2, "Melodie dell'Orfeo" (Arr. Sgambati), performed by Anthony Goldstone. (It's a bit of an easter egg, since the film is set around 1770 and they talk about Orpheus and Eurydice in it - I'm just that kind of a nerd!)
Of the two IMAGES that I use to illustrate the witches theme, the first is a copper engraving by W. Jury after Johann Heinrich Ramberg (1829) for Goethe's Faust I and the second I believe to be taken from the Swiss Wickiana collection from the 16th century, although I couldn't find a proper citation for it.

Holy crap that last scene makes me cry every single time. So much unspoken pain and happiness in it. Adèle Haenel is such a beautiful actress

Man, I had quite a different take on that last scene! I read it as... So you know how earlier, Heloise has kind of a dismissive attitude toward music? Like she seems to think Marianne means it will be a distraction from a dull life. But she's missing the point: it's not a distraction, it's a powerful and intense experience. But I think in that moment, she understood what Marianne meant: music doesn't distract from a dull life, it's one of the things that makes even a dull life worth living. Sort of like her love affair with Marianne. Huh, I've never thought of it that way before, but now that you speak of the temporality of music... You can actually compare the affair to music: they're both brief experiences that can't be preserved like a painting, and yet... That doesn't minimize their value. In fact, they're things you have to actively pursue, rather than letting them pass you by. Huh, that's another interesting thing: Heloise doesn't even go after being painted: it's something that happens to her and that she doesn't want, much like her marriage. Maybe there's this sentiment of... That which is forever becomes unbearable, or that it becomes dull. Wow! There's like a whole binary going on here! Never would've thought of that without this video! One of two of my points might be a little off, but... It's definitely interesting to think about!

Thanks so much for your interesting comment, this gave me a lot to think about. The whole connection of temporality to dullness/vividness and of music to that makes a lot of sense to me. That which is preserved dies and that which is fleeting is alive. (Or at least that could be one of the theses of the film.)

Great insights you raised! Just wanted to point that, as far as I remember, Heloise wasn't dismissive of music, she actually loved it and saw it as a silver lining of her having to go to Milan to get married - she would be able to attend concerts.

Thank you very much for this wonderful analysis! I just saw the movie yesterday in a theater (I already streamed it online 2-3 months ago but now that the theaters have opened again in my city, I wanted to see this story again but this time on a big screen with loud music). I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't properly breath during the last scene. Such a beautiful masterpiece!

Thank you for this stellar analysis of this stellar film. I saw it over a month ago and it is still stuck in my brain. I can't get it out of my head for a whole day. Maybe that's a good thing with a Family friend in ICU with COVID 19, it 's my dad's best friend and my dad's Alzheimer's has him lost at the ability to process his emotions because his best friends were closely tied to my Mum who passed from Alzheimer's last year. 2020 has been a s**t year and I swear, this film has been the only thing that has made me smile and think. All I can say is this film likely saved my life or at the very least, forced me to fight on thru my own illnesses. Thank you for pointing out the layers. I thought I was the only one seeing them. But the more I explore these videos, the more of an appreciation for their collaboration. p.28

We all need something to show us a ray of light in dark times. I very much hope that the rest of the year (and all the years to come) will be better to you and I hope the film (and my analysis and the analysis of others and finding things we can all agree on) will continue to provide some joy and food for thought! All the best, T.

@@infrequentmusings2179 Thank you for this. I finally convinced my friend to watch the film. (she's not a fan of period drama) naturally, I had to convince her that it was so much more. I just came to watch your video again so I could send her the link to it. Dad and I finally connected with the wife of my dad's best friend 3 months after he died from COVID. in fact I believe he passed shortly after I wrote that comment. I startled myself that I spoke of it. That's not normally my style but my guard was down. I still am affected by this film to this day but in such a warm fuzzy kind of way. It allows me to escape from being confined to my home since March. It's been a long year and I also hope for brighter days. It's hard to imagine life returning to normal for me but I try. Thank you for your kind words. ~R

I recently saw this film on a whim and subsequently purchased a digital copy. I have watched it over and over the last few days. First with the subtitles, then without, so I could focus on the quality of the sound and voices. Thank you for sharing your way of regarding this film. It is insightful and beautifully presented. My friend who is a musician told me that sometimes you need to be taught how to listen. And listen repeatedly until more dimensions reveal themselves. Much like trying to draw still life and finding all different shades and details the more you pay attention.

I believe that the duality of emotions is perfectly portrayed in the last scene of the film. Because we can see Heloise's pain of losing Marianne and not being able to share that experience with someone else, but she is happy at the same time because she was able to live that experience with Marianne, which allowed her to know herself better. The movie could actually work without the need for actual dialogues, because the music and the paintings portray the feelings of each character, from Heloise's mom painting to the painting of Heloise and her daughter.

I can't tell you how much I love this movie. I could watch it every day alongside Barry Lyndon, and still be mesmerised by the beauty and the messages. Still feel like the very last scene- those endings- was the choice of the lover, not the poet. Yeah sure I'm fluent in French- not in English nor Basque or even Italian unfortunately- but still a boring cis non binary guy, and yet that movie completely took me. A couple decades before the revolution. But did it change much? Charlotte de Corday is still viewed as a murderer though she got had the courage to get rid of one of the most despicable and bloodthirsty man- yeah even worst than Robespierre- of the entire movement. I got you're not posting very frequently but hey loved your approach on this incredible movie.
